Kotaku's saying he's the creative director on the PJ Halo game.

Cool.

He's a bit green to be creative director of a Halo game...don't know what to make of it.

I like him though, he's pretty humble and open to criticism from what I can tell.

I don't see the problem with him being the Jade Raymond for this game.  He could also help improve the shitty Halo story telling with the experience he got from working on MGS4!

And I don't know if I would consider him humble or not.  It all depends if he was the one who wanted to put a documentary of his life on the MGS4 LE or not.

I realize that he moved back home to be closer to his family due to medical issues, but I knew Microsoft would snap him up in an instant.

Can't do a worse job than Bungie has over the past two games in the series.

Not a chance. It may be the last one that Bungie will make for a while (at least the last "traditional" one), but two spinoffs were announced a while ago: Halo Wars (RTS) and Peter Jackson's unnamed Halo project (genre unknown). Then there's constant rumors that there's a third-person squad shooter spinoff, that Bungie is working on a spinoff of their own, that another dev will be working on Halo 4, etc.

Yawn.

It was said to close the Master Chief storyline and in that regard be the last 'Halo' in the trilogy, but even that might not be the case with the ending after the credits in Halo 3 where MC and Cortana stumble on a (Forerunner) shieldworld. No way there aren't going to be any Halo games, they're too good and succesful.

Ryan Payton seems fine.  He seemed to just do a job that Kojima was unwilling to do.

Are you talking about being the public 'face' for the game or actually changing the gameplay?

What DOES he do. I thought he was the podcast guy, no he's apparently the dude who invented the gears style controls?

Based on the documentary of him, he didn't seem to have too much deep impact for the game itself.  I don't want to be rude by calling him a glorified community manager, but that is what it came off as.

He's the dude who said to Kojima his controls sucked and he should look at Gears for good 3rd person controls, then he bought a 360 and a copy of Gears for Kojima, then Kojima met him half way.

He was the localization coordinator, getting voices recorded and stuff. He probably edited the script, which was translated by (akitoshi?) Saito, who is also on the first Integral podcast.

I don't know what an AP does. People say he "came up with the idea for western controls," but it's not like he was the one implementing them or even necessarily designing how they'd work.

Dunno.

Kojima can't speak enlgish for shit.

Payton was a glorified translator.

Whatever happened to Kojima's old translator, Scott Dolph? Kojima liked him so much that he named the Marine Commandant in MGS2 after him. You know, the one who died within 20 minutes and turned out later to have been Vamp's gay lover?

Also, he could probably snap Payton in half like a twig.

:lol

To be more specific, he got a 360 and PS3 and put them in a busy intersection of the workplace, and loaded them up with Western-developed games. He turned them on and let them idle at the start screen.

Then he waited as the small natives, entranced by the bright lights and colors, began to curiously examine the devices and attempt operation. By the end, many of the primitives were fans of Gears and BioShock and modern action game controls. I guess the PS3 was left ignored.

I can confirm that Payton is indeed the new creative director for Halo 4.

How I can confirm this?  I'm not an insider of any sort, I'm a waiter/college student in flipping Alaska.  I don't know anybody in the business personally.  But I can confirm this story is all sorts of true.

About two weeks ago, I was working in my restaurant.  It was a slow day, a rainy day, there weren't too many people coming in.  My first customers for the day were a very nice middle-aged couple from Washington.  Me, being an Alaska-born dude, and them, being outlanders, had lots of questions for me.  I told them all I could about the local flora and fauna and such.  Somehow, the topic of conversation segued into their son, of whom they were very, very proud.  The Dad whips out his iphone and starts showing me pictures of his kid's workplace in Tokyo, "He works for Konami, have you heard of them?"

Anyways, to make a long story short.  Ryan Payton's Dad can't keep a secret to save his life, he dialed up Ryan right then and there on his iphone and I had a brief conversation with him.  With Payton's Dad already having spilt the beans about his son's future job, Ryan kinda confirmed it.  "Its not a done deal yet, so don't go blabbing this around yet."

And so I haven't, until now.

and I know, this whole thing sounds fishy.  A guy I know on the internet heard something from some guy, but I swear its the truth.

So there ya go.

What the fuck.

Just because the dude was able to translate in Japanese to Kojima about how MGS controls sucked dick and he needed some of that GRAW action going on, doesn't mean he's now capable of working on a Halo game.

So perhaps some of the quotes in my tale were paraphrased.  But I shit you not.  It actually happened.
And it certainly did appear to be an iphone that I held in my hand.

Well the dude sounds awfully happy about what he's working on next, in the Gamevideos PAX interview.

Throws out there that he's working on a game, talks about how if he's working on a big game then he's happy and shit, hinting that he's working on some big game.

Heh
