There are a few Fringe threads, so I'm randomly necro'ing this one.

RWISE FWOM YO' GWAVE!

I'm caught up. It's fabulous. I can't believe where they've taken this show. It's clear they never had this plan when they first introduced the Observers, but the retconning is so much fun, with all the references to first and second season episodes, I DON'T CARE.

When will the second half of season five run? Does anyone care, or am I the only one still watching it?

I still watching this season it's better than 4 but that's not saying much, sick and tired of this show's breaks I thought we wouldn't have to suffer them this year since it's only like 12 episodes, smh.

Season-Four-Haters: Why the hate?

My only big issue (and it was pretty major), was that I couldn't remember who had done what in which timeline.

I also felt that the "No, Peter, this IS your home; this IS the correct timeline" bit was heavy-handed.

It has been challenging, and not one that they've consistently met, that the show has shifted its focus substantially with each season.

I'd watch anything with Anna Torv

Yeah, I feel the same way. She's got a good future ahead of her, I hope. She's got some amazing acting chops, which are only shown up by John Noble's on the show. I like Peter and Astrid as characters, but the actors who play them feel like they overreach.

I watched the last two episodes last night with my wife. It wasn't a bad ending to the series, but it wasn't great, either. I am going to think on it, then post some impressions, but perhaps the most "damning" statement which can be made about it is, my wife and I didn't talk about it much this morning.

Need to finish this

And I love Anna Torv. She is fairly average looking on the Hollywood scale but she has that je ne sais quoi that forms from a great personality and great looks

Well, two days later, and neither my wife nor I have brought it up. Show kind of dead to us; it did finish more weakly than it deserved.

The white tulip references one of the better episodes in the series, a good one with Peter Weller as a scientist who basically figures out how to loop/reset time, but also gives an interesting look at fate, faith, and how they can interact with each other. That was a fabulous episode, but to have it act as a springboard for the final episode, which is... pale, in comparison, is sad.

Olivia's "big moment" was anticlimactic. When I saw the whole city skyline go dark little by little, I thought "IT IS ON!" ...and then
spoiler (click to show/hide)
she throws a truck at the guy who can dodge bullets, Captain Windmark. I thought she would just make him explode or melt. Even the truck would have been better, if there could have been a moment showing that she was psychically holding him in place while she moved the truck.

Things I liked:
  • Using the backlog of Fringe case evidence lockers (Walter's "Batcave souvenirs") as ammo in the fight against the Observers.
  • September was cool; the actor playing him did a fine job adapting the Observer character to the changes humanity had wrought in him.
  • Walter finally seemed well-integrated between his two personalities: whimsical but broken, and ruthless, god-complex
  • Several bittersweet, "yes, this is the end of the series" moments.

Overall, though, the series shifted too many times, and it was ultimately hard to track who had done what to whom in which timeline. At first, I enjoyed the shift from s1's "Massive Dynamic is the enemy" to s2's "Walternate is the Enemy," but when we were still seeing shapeshifters after the truce, and they brought back David Robert Jones a few times too many... and this last shift over to the future, it felt less like risk-taking and more like indecision.

In the end, it was a good show, I liked it quite a bit, but I wish there had been more consistency over its run, which would have given it a chance of a stronger resolution in the end.

...And if the Observers have been erased from existence, wouldn't Walter and other-side's Peter drowned in the river when September was not there to intervene? Or, without September's accidentally being spotted, wouldn't our-side's Peter never have died?

It's just casual time-travel "lite" storytelling, so I shouldn't let it bother me, I guess.

If Observers never existed then the boy never would have existed to take to the future to stop observers from existing

I think they want to a further point in the future. Humans were artificially evolved and the original 12 were sent back, but the boy was sent to a point where the plan to enslave humanity would not have been enacted.

I think.

We don't see how The Boy interacts with what he encounters, or who he encounters, or any of that... so it's guesswork, sure.

But the theory posited several times during the show's last episodes was, if The Boy is sent to the scientist who makes the discovery about limiting emotions to increase intelligence, the scientist will abandon the line of thought which leads to the Observers' creation, indeed that entire possible future, and all of the Observer race will cease to exist. Since that was covered in exposition several times, within the Fringe universe, that's what would happen. As a throwaway line, Walter states that if the plan works he and The Boy will be a paradox, and will only be able to live their life in that future, from the moment they arrive, no coming back.

Because September saved Peter to begin with, Walter and Peter should have drowned. Then again, not everything has to make perfect sense. It just would have been stronger if it had. The science in the show was never supposed to be taken seriously, it just would have been better if it had been internally consistent.
