How much could this possibly cost? No fucking way it is under 5 grand. Is it some sort of crazy hybrid? How could an SLR do video? It must have significant digital components over previous models.

The US Body (no lens) has a suggested price of $2700.

I'm seriously thinking about getting it or the 50D, its a Full Frame camera too, so its an equivalent of a 35mm camera when it comes to focal length of lenses.

I haven't seen any release dates yet. It was just revealed a few hours ago. The 50D is supposed to be on sale the 6th of October so I would think around November or something for this Camera.

Just another note about video recording...

It records the video in 4GB files so that's 12 Minutes of video in 4GB files. It also has an HDMI port on the body so you can connect HDMI to HDMI HDTV and play back the files form the Camera to the TV (I would think).

Yow, that's way cheaper than I expected, and only $500 more than the current price for the 5D. The D700 is a couple hundred more than that right now. Hmmmmm.

The whole D700 vs. 5D MKII debate is interesting. The only lens I have from Canon is the 50mm f/1.4, so I could easily go to Nikon if I wanted too.

I have a few Nikon lenses, including one that's AIS, so a Nikon body would save me at least a bit of money. I'd probably only pick up a 50/1.4 if I bought a Canon body. This is a decision I won't likely be committing on for several months, but as both of these bodies will probably stick around for a couple of years like the 5D, I have a while to decide.

I'm also gonna be watching Photokina closely for any kind of budget-minded digital rangefinder camera that might come along. Leica already tipped their hand and they're not interested in that market. Micro Four Thirds is also interesting.

Yeah, even moreso than this, I want an affordable digital Leica. I love my Leica III, I just wish I could afford one of the more modern Leicas. It's ridiculous: I make a nice amount of cash, and Leicas are still ridiculously priced.

Leica cameras are soooooo overpriced (which I hate since I also love the design, like many others), its just hilarious but I was looking into Digital Rangfinders too. Doesn't Zeiss have one?

Dude, get a Leica III. They are great cameras for getting used to film with. I find using film more "fun" because there's something more of a thrill to it.

I think I might just do that. I've been wanting to mess with Film (mainly B&W) and mess with a Rangefinder. I'll be able to do both with your suggestion.

Zeiss has a rangefinder, but it's not digital. Some folks are betting on them to release a digital rangefinder (via Cosina, same people who make the Voigtlander rangefinders and lenses), but my money's on Nikon. There have been some juicy rumors about DRF vanity projects at Nikon that might actually make it onto the market someday.

I skipped getting a pre-M Leica because of the squinty viewfinder. I love my M2, though the older Leicas have a different kind of charm, and are smaller to boot.

If you go the film route, I would HIGHLY recommend learning how to develop film yourself. It is very satisfying. You have as much control developing the film as you do framing the shot.

Canon or Nikon should get on it. I would actually get a nice rangefinder instead of a regular old Point and Shoot (assuming they make a nice and small one).

Oh definitely. I was reading about the history of using Sepia and Cyanotype and the effects you get from timing things differently... it looks as though whole world is just open up to you. Post processing on the PC feels so mundane sometimes and its a shame that most of my shots will stay in the digital space.

Yeah, using... say... a Telephoto lens or a super wide lens. I don't even think entry level HD cameras are able to use such an array of lenses? The possibilities are pretty cool. Though, I believe there's no AF when it comes to video, so you'll have to manually focus.

The high ISO capabilities of that and the D700 will probably be what pushes me to get one of those two instead of the 5D MkI. :'(

The lil' Four Thirds DSLR are so freaking cute. Equip one with a wide pancake lens and your good to go.

Also, that Leica camera is ridiculous, I can't wait to see some shots from it.

Look into getting a Canon Rebel XT and get the Canon 50mm f/1.8 Prime lens. Great combo for taking general shots and portrait shots of family and friends.

I have a 5D Mark II preordered (no money down) but I have two concerns about the video aspect of things that need addressed before I plunk down plus two grand:

1. No 24p mode -- 30p looks "video-y" and annoys me
2. H264 Compression -- haven't seen a real uncompressed sample where the camera actually moves.
