Travel: totally worthless?
« on: September 21, 2008, 07:35:09 PM »
So this kinda sucks.  Basically all the activities I ever engage in anywhere fit into a handful of categories:

1) working at soul-destroying jobs,
2) completely futile attempts to find love/get laid/make a connection/whatever,
3) fantasizing about grandiose music/programming/social engineering projects and occasionally making insignificant filling-a-lake-with-an-eyedropper progress toward implementing those projects,
4) making insignificant progress toward finishing the 3423652356235 pages of math and computer science textbooks and papers I buy/download every month,
5) dicking around on the internet.

This basically means that travel has no utility whatever.  (2) would be even more pointless and pathetic than usual, (3) and (4) don't benefit from being another place, which means I'll probably just end up doing (5).  I even kinda miss (1), it's horrible but at least passes the time.

I don't actually play games much anymore.  The game-related activities I do indulge in mostly fit under (5) and (3)

But you have like an encyclopedic degree of knowledge on Square's staffing.  That's just not healthy.

I do still spend hours doing searches for interviews/staff info, but it's just an uncontrollable compulsive activity.  The staffing knowledge has become an independent end in itself, it's not really tied to an interest in the games too much anymore.   It's not really tied to anything at all.  I have bought a handful of DS games in the past year, but my playtime averages maybe 5-10 hours a month.

all the restaurants here I've tried are pretty expensive, maybe a 50-75% premium over Portland prices.  I guess that's typical of touristy cities.

getting through customs was a huge ordeal.  I'm too lazy to recount it again so I will copy & paste from an email to my mom:

Quote
The problem, in its mundane manifestation, was that you have to provide "proof of funds", i.e. show that you have enough money to survive your stay without resorting to drug running and prostitution.  I had seen this requirement mentioned somewhere but had forgotten about it, and because I'd asked at Bank of Am. about the possibility of getting funds from my check card, and they'd told me they had sister banks in Canada at which I could make withdrawals in Canadian currency without even paying any extra fees etc., I wasn't carrying much cash at all ($63).  They were highly skeptical about this --- the Canadian debit card system was completely different, there are no BOA in Canada, did I perhaps have it confused with Victoria, Texas?, etc., etc.  (The BOA teller's info turned out to be totally correct.)   Finally they said they really shouldn't be letting me in at all, but they would on the condition that I relinquish the "visitor document" they were giving me upon exiting Canada and no later than the 29th, and if I didn't relinquish the document there would be a warrant put out for my arrest (seriously!)  The real problem was the metaphysical subtext of their interrogations; God knows I don't want to deal with them any more than is necessary.

so if I lose or forget the document, which knowing me is very possible, I could be in that meth addict's position  :o
