Some new clips from Resistance 2

Looks crazy hot, improved like hell visually, and the in-game music is a smart addition.

wasn't a fan of the first one, but it sure looks like they're going all-out for the sequel

between single player, co-op, and multi you'll certainly get your $60 content-wise

Come on, man, it actually does look pretty decent.  You really think this looks bad?

I mean, there are still some rough edges (I don't like the gun animations all that much), but it's still visually attractive.  I just finished Crysis Warhead last night and I can still admit that this game looks nice in its own right.  You don't need to be pushing the latest graphics engine to be an attractive game.  The environments are all pretty neat looking and some of the set pieces are huge.

That's really what was lacking in the first one, an "all-out" mentality. They had controls, level design, and so forth down, but it never ventured far outside the confines of Solid Shooter™, although the MP was pretty awesome. Maybe they kept it conservative because they were unsure of the genre, but this seems very different.

Come on, man, it actually does look pretty decent.  You really think this looks bad?

The game looks hot as hell, well beyond "pretty decent." Arguing otherwise will really only serve to make you look like a petty minded shitclown with an agenda. Ergo, it's totally alright if Borys bitches about it, as it's perfectly expected of his character.

Really, it's those weapons animations and camera motion that annoy me.  I think developers often fail to pay proper attention to such details and it really improves the appearance of an FPS game.  Take a look at Killzone 2 and Crysis, for instance.  Both games have excellent animation on the weapons and I feel that really enhances the visuals.  They could also have used some object based motion blur in there along with more weight in all of the animations in general.  If you build an insanely complex scene but objects running around sport weak animation it will generally appear inferior to a less complex scene with superior animation.  Motion is so critical.

R2 looks so good in many other areas, but it still falls short in the animation department.  I really expected a massive improvement over the original due to their experience on the system and their previous game (Ratchet ToD).  Different kind of animation, of course, but very impressive.

It looks pretty good, particularly the wooded part and the big scripted monster.  Explosions kinda look crummy and most of the guns don't display much of a sense of power.  It visually reminds me of Half-Life 2 in that way and others.
I like coop games though so I might end up getting it  :P

Are you talking about the actual weapon animations, or how the gun relates to the view? Technically, the game probably has the coolest weapon animation in a game to date, what with the many detailed moving parts. Gun motion seems to be of the COD/Halo school, so that doesn't bother me, but I could see how you could want more motion in view. I'm thinking it'd probably be hard to combine with the more, er, action focused firefights.

I'm talking about both.  The way the character manipulates the weapon seems overly quick and jerky.  I know it's a faster paced game, but smoother transitions need not slow down your gameplay if you do it properly.

I suppose the way the gun relates to the view IS my primary concern, however.  It seems like a gun on a stick or something.  Very stiff.

Some of it is motion blur, some of it is a lack of motion.  Dark1x has it covered.
Whatever that beam gun was, it looked super weak and I couldn't even see it killing anyone.  It needs some extra effects or something.
I beat Prey recently (good weekend deal on Steam) and that game had a bitchin' beam gun near the end that felt awesome to use.

I'm pretty sure that this is a matter of balance and feedback. If I've learned anything from griping about gun on a stick design, it's that people want fast gun interaction. To use one given example, I'm not convinced that the gun motion in Killzone is going to be very popular. People will be very impressed by how it's presented, and then complain about it when they actually get to play it. We'll see, but I can see both your concern, and why it probably is the way it is.

Then again, blur may be absent because they opted to go with cosmetically active gun models. They do take pride in their guns, so maybe it's just their design choice. Still, the above applies; I griped like crazy about the gun on a stick style of COD4, but at 24 hours of MP, I guess I can see why it is they way it is. And no one else ever seemed to agree with me in the first place.

Just watched the forest walkthrough, and now I'm almost tempted to rent Resistance just to laugh at how bad the forest environment looked, compared to this.

I am actually really surprised by how good (not just on a visual level) this game looks.  I don't know why I expected less, but it looks like it is going to turn out great.

Also, if you watch one of the Gametrailers walkthroughs the guy demoing it attempts to look away from a crazy clipping glitch.

Depends, I suppose. I want more realistic motion, but I think we have already agreed that it doesn't always work. The question then is if the game itself is flawed if it can't support better gun motion.  Would it make it too much of a pain in the ass for developers to give us the power to adjust these things ourselves?

If anything, I'd like to see more actual first person motion. Gun motion and sway, actually interacting with the environment to make it feel more like a character than just a walking gun. But I don't think it's a flaw in the design, or something that was somehow not developed properly.

And of course, I'm predisposed to taking a lenient eye to this. Seems like a petty argument though, considering no one has ever seemed to agree with it when it's been brought up re: other games. Games that, really, featured hell of a lot more rigidity than this.

They seem more confident, or something. Or maybe they just listened real well to criticism, and watched other games closely. Hopefully it's still an Insomniac game; I haven't seen much in the way of new and wacky weapons yet, and now I'm told that the Hailstorm isn't even in the game. Maybe that will make it a better or at least more popular shooter, but I for one miss inventive weapons in games.

Related to the gun motion, I had forgotten how good Crysis feels. It's the perfect amount of sway.

Maybe I'll get this sooner rather than later.

I still feel like Gears and Halo 3 Mythic will be more than enough online time for me this fall though.

Watch the clips dude. If this is B class, then A must be entirely theoretical. That's not to say that it looks like it shits on every other FPS from a great height, just that it looks easily on par with the upper crust of the genre.

Have any good examples of such games, so that I can go into defense/troll mode again?

I'll say this, it particularly shits all over Resistance, which is great. Resistance had great snow and alien environments, but their attempts at light forest or any other area with foliage were pretty abhorrent. This forest though, it looks damned good. Water is a small detail, but that too has improved dramatically from the Grimsby docks of the first one.

I dunno man, I'm watching the video and I don't know what I'm supposed to be seeing. It's not ugly. I like the big robot in the background. But animation wise, texture wise, what is the big deal? It's technically competent. I can see picking a fight with a man calling it bad or subpar, but I... I dunno. I don't really ever play console FPS games. But I watch videos of them from time to time. This looks like... Halo 3, I guess? Halo 3 has a big giant robot you fight as well IIRC.

Well, I wasn't actually being serious. Nor do I really care; the game looks great, which is more than I for one had expected. I honestly didn't think they had it in them to be good at this kind of stuff, just Ratchet stuff. There were a score of blatant weaknesses in Resistance, and they seem to have fixed at least a good chunk of them, which is good.

On an somewhat detached note, why is it that only sci-fi games seem to push natural environments these days? I've been playing Ghost Recon lately, and now I realize how badly I would want a GR game set in forest environments like the one shown here. Crysis was approaching it during some levels, but you know... lone wolf in a powersuit, it just isn't the same thing.

Seriously though, the game looks pretty good.  The huge enemies are especially impressive.  They really look like monstrosities that would take an epic fight to take down.

But the standard grunts still look kinda lame and the explosion effects are quite mundane.

Overall, the videos gave me a good impression of R2.  I'll give it a fair shake when it comes out.

Looks pretty damn good, as I expected, but I doubt I'll have time to play an FPS other than Gears 2 this winter so I'll probably end up passing on it unless folks start raving about it pretty soon. 'Better than Resistance 1' isn't really enough...

I hate how narrow the field of view is.  Some games do that to make it feel more claustrophobic but this game has large, wide-open battlefields, that choice just annoys me.  Technically, the game looks good but the art is pretty generic.  All the enemies just look like a gimp roided up.  and I don't get scared of that.

Looks pretty decent, aside from the art and I don't like how the guns and bullets still don't feel like they have any weight or impact, especially the sound and energy weapons. I hope the levels are cooler than the first.

Resistance weapons are kind of like the Halo weapons in that the bullets seem like they were meant to damage the enemy and not kill them.  I am not the biggest fan of this and enjoy more of a middle ground (like what is seen in Crysis), but I do enjoy it more than one hit/one kill.  If you play Resistance 1 online now, almost every server is one hit/one kill and it is so annoying.

I guess I missed this the first time I watched it, but the revolver all of a sudden became real cool. When you shoot an enemy, the bullet stays in the body, and alt fire makes it explode so that you can take out surrounding enemies. A gun and a trap in one, pretty cool. That's from the developer walkthrough #1.

And the new media was the first time I actually got excited for single player.  The 8 player class based co-op was the biggest draw of this game for me.
