I'm debating building a new rip. I kinda want to use my Mac Pro as a Mac, and from a PSU perspective, it's pretty limited.
Anyone want to help me out a bit? Smooth? What's hot right now? Needs to be better than the Mac Pro in all regards. I want quad core, faster than my current machine (3.0ghz) and I want a humungadunga power supply because I am SLI-curious. No less than 1000w. I'd like to keep it in the neighborhood of 2 grand. I don't need a GPU (immediately), either. I have that covered.
If you're willing to spend that much, I'd wait a few more months for the I7 processor. It's a new chip and should be faster than the current quad-cores. Also, the I7 mobo is supposed to be compatible with both crossfire and SLI.
Honestly, I think it's worthwhile to upgrade to a new PSU+ GPU upgrade right now since you game at 1920x1200. I've seen significant performance increases with the upgrade from 8800GTX to 280GTX. Upgrading a PSU and GPU is much less of a hassle than installing a new mobo.
Go with 2 x Asus 260 Top if you don't want to spend too much money. For PSUs, I would recommend Corsair, based on what I've read in reviews although my Coolermaster 1000w has no problems with a 280GTX SLI setup.
