Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2 and Sega Genesis Collection are awesome.

They support 480p, save states, have stretchable screen areas, bonus artwork and features for every title, extra bits of trivia and info on every game, fully customizable controls, and the graphics on these two collections is as close to perfect as possible given the differences in the arcade machine's resolutions and typical television displays. And they sell for 20 bucks for like 20 games on each collection.

However, DE's XBLA games are shit. Controls can't be customized. No bonuses. Awful, awful graphics. All for around 5-10 times the price per game (UMK3 is 800 points, or about 10 bucks, while if you do the math, Super SF2 Turbo in Capcom Classics Collection is about 1 dollar of the 20 the whole collection costs).

Are like the good programmers at DE making these collections and the president's distinguished mentally-challenged nephew is making the XBLA games?

WTF is going on?

yeah and Genny VF2 is totally shitty. That's the only disappointment with Genesis Collection, because they could have easily just put the Japan only arcade VF2 they released on PS2 :/

The PSP Genesis collection is great. I hadn't played Sonic 2 in ages, and it just instantly took me back. I also missed out on a lot of the later Genesis library, so it's fun to play stuff like Vector Man for the first time, after hearing so much about it. Bring on Volume 2!

-2 points for no fucking manual repros, though. That should be mandatory in any retro collection. Even the Activision 2600 collection does that (that's a fun collection, too).

I'm starting to agree. It's so incredibly disappointing.

The promise is great: fully featured independent games (too bad the reality is that they by and large suck ass, and that's why they could never get a real release) or update, HDTV enhanced, online classic arcade games (too bad the reality is the games are not the top tier arcade classics, but third stringers no one really cares about, the online is crap, and the HDTV enhancement is a shitty filter that MAME and other emus have left behind a decade ago).

The only saving grace for XBLA right now is that Virtual Console is an even bigger rip off.

I dunno Defender is a pretty good port.

I play XBLA more than anything else on the system. Tigerriot isn't exactly the most objective gamer either ;p

I dunno. I think that you're playing XBLA more than anything else is more of an indictment of how sparse the whole next gen catalog of games are at this point. Not to knock the 360's library, since it's significantly better than whats on either wii or PS3 at this point or even in the next four months -

But XBLA has been a big disappointment. Slow release of titles, shoddy emulation, bugged net code, inability to customize controls, terrible HDTV support, big titles plagued by delays (SF2) or incompetence (Contra)...

Conversely, I think XBLA is a disappointment if you're looking for a nostalgia fix (ala your complaints about SF2 and Contra, two games I personally never planned to download) -- but if you're looking at original content: Marble Blast Ultra, Mutant Storm, Lumines Live, Small Arms et al, it's been quite a success, at least for me.

I'm not sold on Lumines or even Marble Blast, but Geo Wars and Small Arms are pretty neat.

But the arcade game thing is huge...I think it's a complete flop in terms of bringing classic arcade games into the modern online-and-doesn't-look-like-shit-on-HDTV world.

Lumines is great. You see the light once you buy Lumines II for PSP for 5 dollars more and realize what an utter piece of shit it is. Lumines Live is what lumines II should have been.
