Rumors tumors: PS4 to be twice as powerful as a PS3
« on: September 30, 2008, 03:35:18 AM »
http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2008/0929/kaigai469.htm

Hopefully they mean twice as powerful as the potential of an untapped PS3, which would be enormous. :omg :hyper :omg...:dizzy....:angel
Quote
Goto Hiroshige has received PSX4 spec info from Japanese developer sources who received preliminary spec from SCEI for developer feedback(whom Goto refuses to name due to NDA).

- SCEI has sent rough PSX4 spec to 3rd party developers for feed back. Based on the description, PSX4 is a Wii-tized PSX3, no more than 2X as powerful.
- SCEI wants to beat Xbox 3 to launch. 2011 is the deadline, or sooner.
- SCEI pulled all its engineers from IBM Texas, and there is no new CELL architecture being developed. PSX4 will use same CELL architecture with improvements.
- SCEI will dump XDR and use standard JEDEC memory type(GDDR3/DDR3) for main memory.

 :-\

Hopefully not true, but ah well, it was fun while it lasted.

jeez, what will that figure be revised down to by the time devs get their hands on one? 1.0000001x as powerful?

If this is true, it's not much of a surprise.  Between the rocky economic future and the success of Nintendo selling shit hardware, this is the smartest possible move, and nobody here should giggle because MS is likely to do the very same thing.

Well, it's unclear whether they're gonna go all out for cost-cutting and ditch BR as well. but yeah. They can't afford to sink bajillions into further semiconductor tech development while on the verge of a 2nd 'Sony Shock'. Will it even have a HDD, or are they gonna take the Ninty route of making us buy our own SD cards? (not a HORRIBLE option but...)

Having said that, this is not that surprising. The PS3 cost Sony a fortune, and they can't sink that much money in again with PS3's current performance and PSP being moribund.

I expect EPIC damage control come tomorrow on GAF.

fyi the pc watch article seems to have been misrepresented by deadmeat (eb's technical advisor in absentia)

according to gamecyte -- who may be a viral marketing operation, which would make them only somewhat more reliable than deadmeat -- the substance of the rumor is that sony may reuse the cell architecture and go with jedec memory (whatever that means) instead of xdr. the rest, including the low performance target, is pc watch's speculation

By the time this is ready, BD will be cheap.  BD PC drives are already pretty cheap.  That said, I hope and pray they at least move forward on making DD a focus, because that's change that I can live with.  Fuck Gamestop in their pooper.   Gimme DD future NOW.

EDIT:  Eh, drohne, we may as well talk about this now, since the next 360 and PS3 will more than likely go this route, complete with waggle controls.

I'm not smart with compooters, but isn't it difficult to make a significant power jump if you're using the same architecture?

yeah, i'm pretty much resigned to a wii future. in any case i'll be 30 by the time the next set of consoles rolls around, and this in tandem with universalized waggle might be the push i need to drop this stupid hobby

Same here.  Honestly, I feel my interest getting weaker this gen.  Due to the giant budgets required, there just isn't the diversity of games out there as there was with previous generations.  At this point it is fairly obvious that there will not be a PS2-esque flood of good-not-great niche games.  Developers bank on big hits, and for whatever reason, I find that less interesting.

pardon me for sounding stupid, but isn't it becoming extremely difficult to get anymore raw processing power out of a single CPU now?  I thought multi-unit processors were the wave of the future, and as such a mere %100 gain in the next generation isn't really so bad.  Seeing as how R&D costs were ridiculous, and game development NOW is crippling, slowing down the tech advances makes sense, right?

And there's a fuckton of difference between two Gamecubes=Wii and two PS3s=whatever in terms of power, right?  Am I a moron for not getting what all the hubbub is about?
Uhhh I think they should worry about PS3 first
This generation is a lost cause. The best Sony can do is position themselves for the next round, Microsoft is doing the same already.  The difference between the two is Sony might actually make a modest profit on the PS3 before everything is said and done.

Pretty much, there will be no diversity Microsoft or Playstation consoles, and Nintendo will only have wagglefied games. PSN/XBLA and Wii Ware (:lol) are showing they aren't going to pick up the slack either.

Each way gamers lose :(

Heh. I still remember the IGN "Revolution" boards after Perrin said that it would only be 2-3x more powerful than the GameCube. I wonder if the same arguments then are being used on the PS3 boards now.  :lol

Why should they or MS bother?

The Wii has stolen the party. PLAYSTATION(TM) 3 and Xbox 360 are fighting over crumbs from lord's table.

Not true.

As long as PS360 are getting the best software, no one should care about Wii's success...

Look on the bright side, the PS4 could be Sony's swan song like the Dreamcast was.  In 10 years you will have people still loving on it and thinking that the buried Sony would eventually reemerge while you play your shitty Ratchet rehash games on your Nintendo consoles that are just now capable of playing Bioshock and your Xbox console where the big hits for the year are Halo Green Thumb Jumble and Halo Bombad Racing.

microsoft will probably release their system 6 months later at most, especially after seeing how much difference it made this gen, which means not only does this gen sucks hardcore, but it is going to suck hardcore for just a little while. and now that next gen systems are going to be like the wii, things are about to suck even more hardcore

HD 2D probably takes more time and costs more to do.  Strider with Wario Land Wii type graphics in HD would be so awesome; it's a shame that Capcom figured out that they could put out a cheap 8-bit game and make a bunch of profit for so little work that they don't need to do cool things like that anymore.

I doubt KOF XII or the latest Guilty Gear cost a fraction of what Uncharted or Gears did. Wario may have cost a bit due to the Production IG work in it, but even then, I doubt it.

I doubt it will even be that powerful. A $600 system already failed, do they really want to put out a $650+ system  :lol

Nintendo is the future for better and worse. I'm not convinced we even need a next gen system in 2011. The PS3 and 360 are so powerful we should still be seeing new stuff for the next few years.

More RAM better GPU or something. As PD stated, I can't see how they'll keep the costs down... they'll just be in the same situation they were in at the start of this gen.

Would be interesting if they use some sort of Solid State Storage in place of the HDD (for caching and game saves)... if the costs have been greatly reduced by 2011/2012. Then require the end user to buy a larger, standard HDD for more extensive Media usage (Saving videos, pictures and music)
