I've got a related question:
The car I bought this spring is AWD and has summer tires.  I live near DC in Northern VA and will be driving around the state during the holidays.  From what I hear, summer tires are pretty much useless below 40 or 50F, and I will die if I drive with them in any kind of winter weather.  So i guess I have to buy either all seasons (which are not as good in summer or winter but work in both) or get winter tires, which might not work so well when it's warmer, and that's a pretty common occurrence in Virginia winters...  and if I were to do that, I might get a separate set of rims altogether and be stuck in the same costly boat as mojo.  I'm not planning to drive in snow/ice if I can help it, and anything significant is pretty rare in VA anyway...  What to do

That being said, the difference between driving between regular tires and winter tires in snow is pretty huge.

honestly i'd just go with all weather here in va unless you're doing any racing or heavy driving on your day to day existence here in NoVA

What size are they?

And they're jacking prices here because they passed a law where everyone has to have winter tires during a period of time. I think its Nov 12 - March 12 or something like that. So EVERYONE is buying them.

Rims are 18 inch, I think I can only go down to 17 because of the size of my brakes, so no cheap steel wheel option.

Well, it is a pretty racey car (though not crazy powerful) but I'd be bullshitting if I said I really drove it to its full potential anyway.  I doubt I'm ever taking it to a track.  It's just a bummer to knowingly compromise performance for convenience, though I guess I've already done that by picking a more liveable car than some others people might cross-shop.  I'll probably take the all-season option...

I went to Montreal in January for some business... and holeeee shit... cold as fuck, and got stuck in some blizzard, and couldn't find my way back in that underground tunnel system they have... some guy was telling me a story in Quebec French and I had no idea what he was saying but I could tell he was wasted... the story was fascinating... it was probably about how people from the USA like me are stupid.


Aside from the business it was fun.

Also, I was in the underground and went to McDonalds... on my way this lady fell down some stairs, and as she was falling down she kept swearing in French.  After I helped her to her feet, and was well enough away I couldn't help but laugh... it was like a weird cartoon.

I'm in PA and we use all season tires on our cars. When I first started driving though, I had studded snow tires on my car. I thought it was kind of silly, because it's not like we had snow on all our roads all winter long, haha.

I like 4-wheel drive in the snow.
