I got a job offer - yay!
« on: October 03, 2008, 11:36:31 AM »
Update: Offered a job! 12% salary increase over previous employer. Just got to fill out some paperwork and stuff to make it official!

I'm not quite sure how it went!  Will find out by Monday, I guess.

good luck!

i'm still waiting to hear from my last interview a week ago.  i've consigned myself to the fate that i probably didn't get it, but i wish they'd let me know one way or another

i have another interview next thursday, and a former boss called me after hearing that i was out of the company which fired him (to bring in the person who ultimately fired me).  it would be a poop job for less money, but it would be income while i try to leverage something in nyc.

in other news, i will be able to make rent this month.  woo

I know length is pretty good, but I feel pessimistic about the whole ordeal.  The guy was a real ball buster and I gave one Palin-esque ramble at one point.  I think I even said, "We had to shore up our econom- it's all about job creation!"

I'm still depressed that Willco got fired from GameStop, because that means the chances of him getting transferred to a KY store are zero now.

I was totally hoping that we could TAG TEAM SOME BITCHES.

 :lol

The offer was from Hollywood Video.  There was some talk of secret corporate hijinks going on, but instead, I opted to take a "conversion store".  Basically, one Store Manager runs both the GameCrazy and Hollywood Video operations.

I was definitely not too keen just going straight to the competition, but after speaking to the DM, I felt like it'd be a good fit.  They've restructured senior management and company direction drastically within the past year, so it's not the same company that was run so haphazardly.

The plus side is I get a discount on games and movies, I get to rent movies a week before they come out, I will see a good increase in salary and I'm being brought on with the full intention of being developed as a multi-unit (read: District) manager.  The workload seems to be a lot, lot less too.

They filed for Chapter 11 like a year ago, but they're past all the ugliness and liquidating.  All the senior management is gone from that reign, as well. They're working on actually incorporating all their brands, restructuring the stores entirely with a different sales focus and expanding.

There's a good chance you can see them under a new brand and go public sometime down the line.

The end result is that they'll be more like FYE than awkwardly run entities loosely tied together and rental-focused.  They will still do new release and videogame rentals, but their focus will be more on DVD sales (used and new), HD content, videogame sales and trade-ins.

It's definitely a ground floor situation, but I like their new focus and merchandising efforts.

Most likely.

I'll have to undergo some new, comprehensive management training (the emphasis on standardized training and strict hiring protocol is new to me) at another location than the home store I am placed in.

I hope more Hollywood Videos open in Charlotte.  My gf and I cleaned out three stores last year at about $1 a dvd when they went bankrupt.  It was awesome, I still haven't watched 1/3rd of them.  Best money spent, ever.
