Looking for a job-bore (HALP!)
« on: October 03, 2008, 03:54:31 PM »
Hey fellas,

After much consideration, I'm deciding that I want to leave my current place of employ. I currently work in web programming (lol) and as the general IT guy in a small office (like five to seven people small). Initially, I really enjoyed working here because pretty much all I do is cruise around the internet while waiting for stuff that needed to get fixed (and occasionally, update a website or two), but recent managerial changes have pretty much made my life hell. I'm working weekends and overtime on this paltry pay they're giving me, plus some of the higher management assholes are consistently trying to barrage me with "pass the buck" bullshit, basically stacking my plate with stuff I shouldn't even be working on.

Anyway, I'm considering moving into one of my friends' workplace as a software support analyst (basically a C/SQL/Oracle programmer), and I really want to make it in, as in, I don't want to screw up. I haven't really been one to master the art of job hunting, so I'm really worried. To start, I really don't know how to write a cover letter/e-mail to the guy that receives the resumes, and if someone could give me advice that would be awesome.

General job interview tips would also be welcomed.

prole has given excellent it job tips as far as resumes and how to interview.  do a search on his name and "interview" and you should be able to easily locate what you need

I used prole's advice from that thread to interview for my second job (I work two days a week in two different places) and I got it.  He's my hero.

Prole's advice helped me a lot too especially regarding interviews. Regarding cover letters/resumes I think the best tip is to avoid cliches and actually tell them how you demonstrate skills instead of 'worked in a team environment' something more like 'worked with managers  and operations to deliver a Oracle database' etc.

Don't be one of those tools that talks about how awesome you are when all you know is just how to quote Ronald Reagan and Gordon Gekko verbatim.

Just got a phone interview today. Prole's tips kinda came in handy, but I'm thinking I'd better read up again when the face-to-face interview comes.
