Recommend me some horror movies.
« on: October 04, 2008, 04:37:14 PM »
Because I want to watch 100 of them(maybe more) before Halloween. I'd like movies that are generally scary, have lots of gore and are considered classics. So far Ive seen Midnight Meat Train and I'm currently watching The Howling.

Check out recent frenchie flick Inside (A l'interieur).  It's pretty good shtuff.  Foreign horror is always a bit interesting.  There's not a whole ton of talking, so the subtitles ain't no thang.

You should watch Welcome to the Dollhouse, too.  Actually, you should watch all of Todd's flicks.

Palindromes was one of the most awkward experiences I've ever had in a movie theater. And I saw Fat Girl in the theater!!

I spend a lot of time wondering what the hell is wrong with Todd Solondz. Whatever's wrong, I'm surprised he's not been imprisoned yet for some paraphilia.

They will make you feel worse than any horror movie.  At least watch Welcome to the Dollhouse.  It's probably his least creepy film.

Solondz flicks are more horror than Nightmare on Elm Street movies.

At least watch the frenchie flick I recommended.  It is mildly unsettling, suitable for a youngin like yourself.

That's Clive Barker today.  Clive used to be the shit.  Watch the first 2 Hellraisers.  Lord of Illusions is pretty good, too, but I'd only give it a shot if you like the Hellraisers.  Nightbreed is fun, if a bit aimless and slow.  The costumes and makeup are incredible in it.  He also wrote Candyman, which is super awesome.

The second Hellraiser? Eh I couldn't take it seriously. The first one really creeped me out. I'm probably too old to be scared by a horror movie (*challenge!*) so the only way I can be impressed is if something is genuinely creepy-as-shit

Cliver Barker's kind of a sicko. Don't really care much for his work.

You should check out Tales From the Hood.

He's too young to appreciate suspiria.

Oh, man I saw that in one of my film classes a long time ago. Wouldn't exactly say it was scary, tho. Might have been the weird soundtrack (not exactly the type I'd expect for a horror movie).

I think the second Hellraiser is totally worthwhile.  It's more of like a dark fantasy film than a straight up horror flick like the original, but it still has all the horror trappings and it's weird enough that I'm willing to forgive some of the obvious flaws.  It's totally not a by-the-books sequel, especially for a horror flick (we'd get that with the crappy Hellraiser 3).

I can't even imagine watching Hellraiser without immediately after watching Hellraiser 2.  Also, Hellraiser 2 features the line "Your suffering will be legendary, even in hell" which at least automatically makes it a pass.  It's sure as fuck better than watching just about any other 80s mainstream horror.

I wholeheartedly agree with TVC that Hellraiser II is superior to most horror fare from the 80s.  It's a fun piece of fantasy horror.  Like some demented Gaiman movie.

Horror definitely peaked in the 70s and 80s.  You can pick a handful of classics from either decade and be rewarded with great viewing experiences.  Save for the self referential Scream, the 90s was a vacuum.
