PS3 BC: Hardware vs Software?
« on: October 04, 2008, 09:00:14 PM »
What's the difference between the two? If I'm going to buy a PS3, I really want BC, but I want to know what exactly the deal is with regards to it.

20/60 gb PS3s are basically 99% compatible with PS2 games.

Old 80 GB PS3s are compatible with like 85% of PS2 games. Have good compatibility. There is a website right here that can help you with that.

40 GBs and new 80 gbs (the 80s that replaced the 40) are not compatible at all.

Aim for the 60 and get the old 80 if you need to. They're becoming increasingly rare.

The original 60 and 20 gig PS3s have the hardware BC which is basically 100% compatible with every game.  Software based ones like the old 80 gig have almost full compatibility with PS2 games, but I think there are a few that have problems.  Both have perfect PS1 emulation.

Also realize that newer ones don't have BC at all. It is even more of an issues because there are 80 gig units that have software and 80 gig units that don't.

http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

That website lets you search a title and see if it has problems or not.

60GB/20GB: Full 100% BC thanks to EE
US 80GB: about 80-90% of games work flawlessly through emulation
40Gb: none

thanks, guys :)

I knew that the new ones don't have BC -- which is probably the only reason I haven't just gone out and bought one.

I should ask Willco if those refurbished 60GBs at Gamestop are a good idea.

in a couple of years it isn't going to matter which one you get

they'll either find a software solution to BC (very, very doubtful), or it's gone forever (meaning if your 20/60/80 gig flatlines, you're shit outta luck)

that compatibility list is full of shit. several games listed as having no issues have issues.

it's been a year and a half since the 20 gig was axed and they still fix'em or send you a refurb.

i think they let it load to the menu screen,  and if it doesn't crash they give the thumbs up to each other

my 60GB PS3 will run any game I throw at it.  However, in very rare instances, there's some visual 'quirks' that weren't there on the plain old PS2.  Specifically, Shadow of Memories, Yakuza, and ICO all look like they're being processed through a voxel filter now or something weird and shimmery.

Those are the only three games out of the dozens I have in my collection that have been at all problematic, and even then, its not so bad (the issue can be corrected/lessened by turning off the upscaling but keeping the resolution smoothing).

And while we've got PS3 owners here talking about their BC, can you guys tell me why any PS2 game that runs in progressive scan ends up looking worse for it then in 480i?

not really....some of the listings are incredibly detailed. some write ups mention "triangles of corruption" in mid-game FMVs.

i dunno about software but as for hardware there are some games that crash or freeze. star ocean 3 being one of them.

I'm not looking to correct you or anything. I just think the detail with which some of the entries are written is a lil funny.
