Besides, the two Sony betas I've been in so far have certainly been betas. And have summarily been met by shitflinging from people who failed to get that they were, in fact, betas. I think releasing genuine betas to public participants, at least among console gamers, is a bit of a risky deal.

Hell, even the early R2 beta participants started whining when they found out that the public beta would be an improved build. Well, gee, maybe that was the whole fucking point of that early beta, to find issues and improve the game?

Bungie? I'm not really sure, but most of these Sony games now are getting open beta so incredibly close to release. And then there is the Motorstorm 2 demo which was actually a really early version that could be considered a beta. It also is more confusing because there is the super secretive NDA-filled closed beta away from release, then the open beta close to release, then the actual game. It is like some weird middle ground between a true beta and a demo. I'd say the smartest aspect of doing this is that they no longer have to worry about people only playing the beta and never buying the game or something like that.

Calling it a beta gives them some leeway in addressing issues in the build. Which, as mentioned, doesn't always work; I came across long reviews of Warhawk three days into the beta, from people warning potential future buyers from buying this "buggy mess of a game." To some degree, that's just the side effect of introducing something to console gamers that they are not accustomed to, but I can see why they'd want to avoid letting larger groups into early builds. I imagine the Resistance 2 beta will just be an advanced online demo, to fine tune it for launch.
