The making of video on Xbox Live has many exciting interviews with gaming journalists talking about how thrilling it is to ride a beast

It looks like Ax Battler and Gillius Thunderhead are in the game too from the second video.  I might end up getting this.  I like a good hack n' slash like I like beat-em-ups.

Think I might see how Enclave fares installed on my MacBook today.

Hack n' slash, dismemberment, the classic magic, plus parrying when not on a beast.

I just ordered the PS3 version (with Saint's Row 2 for Xbox 360 too!)-- easy to get rid of if it sucks that way.

I love me some Golden Axe but the only way I'm going to touch this game is if they have an orchestrated version of Death Adder's theme. Even then I'll probably just torrent the soundtrack instead to avoid the raping my childhood might receive.

How is the arcade Alien Syndrome? I've only played the SMS version, which was a weird overhead shooter with constantly respawning enemies and bad controls. Think I made it to the first boss then got too fed up with the controls.

Who knows, but no comments I have read yet say it's complete crap-- just that it's not a $60 game, they lied about it being free-roaming (it's linear), and there is a limit to how many lives/continues you have.  Also the beasts are supposed to be sluggish and control like crap.  As long as the slash-combat is okay I'll be fine with this purchase, but it isn't looking too good, huh?

Ok the game is VERY mediocre. I am not underwhelmed really because I didnt know what to expect but this needs to be more like a $49.99 title at best.

1.) The game stage/map engine strangely feels just like Phantasy Star Universe...you run along paths that connect large open areas and you cannot pass the invisible wall that lies along the edge of the areas/path...

2.) The brief fan service comes with the familiar music in the places where the magic/food carying gnomes appear

3.) The general game MUSIC is nowhere near as good as Golden Axe coinop/Genesis - they really should have remixed wherever possible.

4.) the gameplay is about as good as that Conan action/slasher game.

5.) 1 player only WTF? Golden axe is about 3P fun...this is where the game FAILS the most - using that PSO like stage engine with minimal objects for players to jump on etc and the simple combo/position based combat os perfect for online and could have possibly made this game bearable for many. It NEEDED 3 player online co-op WTF x 1,000,000

6.) gore and dismemberment is cool altho it doesn't match vertical vs horizontal finishing strikes well.

7.) Only one player to play as so far (the girl) and the appearance of the Dwarf and his lines/voice acting so far are embarassing

8.) Cutscenes with poor voice acting and shit story noone cares about = suck

9.) Gone is the 'strength' scoring system of games of olde and in with this new wanna be devil may cry scoring crap...

10.) very limited move set

MY impressions after playing past the first major area made up of 5 stages = 6.3 Mediocre but passible

They need to add online or die.

It needs online 3 playr coop bad - then it would be tolerable.

I will play it more but im sitting here with golden axe, dead space (yum) and socom (have played yet) in front of me....

nobody buy this

Too late!

Played through the first level.  It's okay I guess.  Not pure crap, but painfully mediocre.  And what the hell is with the way Tyris walks/runs??  It is BIZARRE.  The game is a combination of a typical slash-em-up plus Heavenly Sword.  You pretty much have to rely on parrying and dodging attacks if you want to make it through the game without losing.  Green colored attacks can be dodged with L1 or R1, L1 dodges orange attacks, and R1 parries blue attacks.  X is a fast-hitting horizontal slash, square is a lumbering vertical slash, triangle functions as a mostly-useless jump button (it is good for knocking enemies off of mounts, that's about it), circle is magic, and R2 and L2 are for running and mounting/dismounting the beasts.  Speaking of the beasts, the first level has the bird creature, and contrary to what I have read, I did not have a problem controlling it and it did not move too slowly.  Maybe the early reviewers forgot about the run button.

On the nostalgia side of things, the little gnomes that appear with power-ups and scurry around is done perfectly, complete the cheesy music.  Definitely brings back memories.  Same thing with the beasts; I like that the enemies will still mount them and attack you with them if you get knocked off.  And Gillius Thunderhead appeared in one cinema so far.  A nice unlockable would be him and Ax Battler playable when you finish the game, but I doubt this made it in.

There are challenge (for rank/score) and trial (survival) modes available too, so the game has some replay value.

It's difficult to recommend this game when there are so many higher-quality titles coming out within the next couple of months.  Might make a decent rental if you keep your expectations low.  I still think the best console slashers in "recent" years are the two Mark Of Kri games and Enclave.  This game does not even begin to approach them, but it is definitely better than Untold Legends 3 at least.  I like it more than Conan as well.

Level two introduces traps and a beast that can turn invisible.  Even fought some monsters as opposed to only barbarians  You also get the Golden Axe, which in its first form can be used as a projectile (with aiming reticule).  It's getting a little better at least.

Ok, so how much ass is in the game?  Are there lots of ass-shots?  Does the main girl still have the tramp-stamp tattoo?  Is her voice sexy?  Inquiring perverts want to know.

Seriously though, how's the atmosphere?  The stuff I've seen has lots of huge carcasses lying around in smoldering ruins and stuff.  Looks cool.  Does it seem unique?

No, not really.  Her voice kinda sucks, but all the voice acting does so whatever.  It actually adds to the cheesy barbarian atmosphere.  She does get different outfits so maybe the later ones are more perverted.  I know the original GA one is in there.

Quote

Very generic hack n' slash game/barbarian fantasy atmosphere.  The game is pretty gory though; you can slice people in half, slice limbs off, and even the beasts die in pretty gory ways.  The blood flies.  I stand by my opinion that is an average hack n' slash title.  Basically you move forward, fight, ride some beasts and fight, get potions/health, and avoid traps.  Very arcade-style in that way.

I am on level three right now, and the difficulty has also been steadily increasing, as have the enemy types and traps.  The first level is basically training and should not be taken as representing the challenge level of the rest of the game.  You get introduced to everything as you go (even in the second level), and then they start throwing it all together at you.  So for example, there are these Death Adder statues off in the distance that you need to hit with the Golden Axe to break and open a gate.  Behind the gate is an enemy generator; enemies will not stop coming at you until it is destroyed.  And since the generator is there, you have got enemies all over the place; there's two huge dudes with armor (armored enemies cannot be killed until you break off all their armor) that can grab you and slam you down, lots of smaller guys with axes slashing at you, and then a shaman or two keeping distance and hitting you with spells or causing huge rocks to fall on you.  So while parrying/dodging and taking down these enemies and avoiding the shaman's attacks, you have got to hit those Death Adder statues and get behind that gate, then work on destroying the generator while fighting more enemies.

I liked that part.  Now what I DON'T like is how suddenly these armored knights charge at me with lances and just knock me off bridges or cliffs.  This doesn't happen in the earlier parts of the game.

And the beasts are fun to use.  One can turn invisible so you can get right behind guys and take them out with one attack, and another (a more gorilla-like beast) has the most overpowering attacks...I didn't even use its specials and just ground-pounded the hell out of everything the entire part of the level I rode it in.

I have it now and am on the 3rd stage.  I like it.  So far its nothing mind-blowing, but its dumb fun.  The graphics suck hard though.  Its like everything is real dull and washed out at a distance, but up close its alright.

I'm having fun with it and that's what really matters.  I think I might keep it, but I'm not positive.  And yeah, a 3.2 is IGN's way of trying to average out their scores by picking on a random game that won't sell a million copies.  I guess they figure if nobody buys it, its okay to slam it, right?

I am worried for the man's mental health.  Seriously.

This is what I wrote on the shit-forum:

Normally I would just say ":lol, " but a 9/10 for this game is borderline-insanity.  It has all sorts of design flaws and the control isn't as responsive as it should be.

Where as when I initially started playing, I felt GA Beast Rider was underscored and was an average, 5/10 or 6/10 title, some of the later enemies and overall cheapness (getting easily knocked off bridges and cliffs and dying because you DODGED does not make for good control) are beginning to make me think it is deserving of the 3/10 scores it has been getting.

I'm going to attempt to play more and finish it before I sell it off by next week, but I don't know if I am going to be able to.

Regardless, a 9/10 is just...wow.  I can't even fathom it.  Does Halverson NOT like anything, or is it just him giving high scores to everything for that fat cash?

I read his preview on one of the previous issues of Play, and he seemed pretty jizzy about it. So I'm not surprised.

Isn't he the same dude that gave Sonic 360 a 9 as well? If there's any journalist whose credibility should be questioned, it's Halverson's.
