i would like to report that i was reading the WORST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ IN MY LIFE earlier this weekend.
The Devil Rides Out by Dennis Wheatley.
Hilariously misguided and racist with atrocious dialogue. I am tempting fate by continuing to read it but let me give you a few GREAT examples from the first 50 pages. (typo)
"What about this Servant you mentioned?"
i only saw him for a moment when he crossed the hall, but he reminded me in a most unpleasant way of the Boget Man with whom UI used to be threatened in my infancy"
"why, is he a black?"
"yes... This great brute stands about six foot eight, and the one glimpse I had of his eyes made me want to shoot him on sight. he's a "bad black" if i ever saw one, and i've rravelled, as you know, in my time"
With a sudden access of bitter fury he turned on Simon and seizing him by his silk labels shook him as a terrier shakes a rat. "You fool," he thundered. "I'd rather see you dead than monkeying with Black Magic"
"...What's the harm is Simon wants to try out a few old parlour games?"
"Parlour games! De Richleau took him up sharply.",my dear Rex i fear your prowess in aeroplanes and racing cars hardly qualifies you to judge the soul-destroying powers of these ancient cults."
then there's the part where they drape Simon's neck with a protective swastika. Simon is a "self professed" Jew. De Richleau defends this action by saying that though the Spanish inquisition misused the christian cross, it didn't lose it's original meaning. same thing here. I'm certain that Simon will find no problem with this either.
The book was written in 1934.
