It's Oblivion with guns -or- open world Bioshock

If that doesn't intrigue you, then you had false expectations.  What it isn't is Fallout 3, as in the sequel to Fallout 2, but I don't really care about that.  I think it looks great (not graphically...it looks like butt graphically).

1) It's Oblivion with gunz. The very same Oblivion with gunz people feared from the day Bethesda obtained the license.
2) It's cramped as fuck. There are very, very, very short distances between camps, vaults, raider bases, shops etc. FORGET the vastness of Fallout 1&2. In Fallout 3 everything lies next to each other.

Other than that I think such Fallout 3 is still better than no Fallout 3 but...

NEVER FORGET

Oblivion with guns, minus the bullshit filler landscape, sounds fuck awesome.

I watched some vids of FO3 yesterday. What the fuck is this shit? Seriously. It's not even Oblivion with guns. It's a Goddamn turn based first person shooter. Every single fight is taking a couple pot shots at enemies beelining straight into you, then turning on VATS and insta gibbing them. Every single fight. I've seen some apologists postulate that all of the videos have either god mode or some sort of super aim turned on, but I think that's bullshit. In FO1 and FO2, it took maybe 2 or 3 levels for someone tagged with small arms to get that skill above 100%, which combined with a high PER means 95% aimed headshots all the time.

What i played was horribly boring, FPS mechanics are broken, you have to use the pause thing turn based shit in order to make the combat work well, and the graphics are absolute shit.

well, everyone who wants fallout 3 can download the glorious playable van buren tech demo.  If Fallout 1 and 2 were as clunky as that, then I'll take Oblivion with guns and disregard the franchise name.

Yeah, I fear this will get a Deus Ex sized backlash after it's out for a month or so. Still, I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic.

It'll give off the appearance of just that, but all told, it'll be maybe 1000 raging internet nerds total.  The game will crack a million and every subsequent thread on any gaming board ever will meltdown into a battle between people who like it for what is and nostalgia dudes.  Heated words will be exchanged. subtle digs about new players being posers will be made. new players will complain about how outdated the old games are. In the year 20XX, nothing is safe.

Yeah, it's a shame.

bioshock was a good game, oblivion was a very weak game if you had ever played a lot of Morrowind. Oblivion = more of the same with better graphics, blah

This is also true.  Oblivion was downgraded a lot from Morrowind in terms of gameplay, and in general Cyrodiil was incredibly boring compared to Vvardenfell.  Morrowind was probably the single player game I spent most time with.

Never played Fallout in my life, and i loved Oblivion.

1st - Fallout 3 is nothing like Bioshock.
2nd - Fallout 3 isn't as fun as Oblivion.
3rd - Fallout 3 really is an ugly game, as soon as you see those character models you wonder if you went back in time.

Oblivion had a sense of physicality to the combat at least, and a more "wow look at this world" thing going on. And getting a horse and traveling across the mountains and even story wise when you go to the temple, and it's snowing and it's so beautiful.

Fallout 3 has none of that. The beginning is even worse than oblivion, they think they are real smart with the whole growing up thing early on but it's lame, and boring, and goddamn the characters talk so much but they are so ugly, and the the cockroaches move like boxes, and when the fighting starts you just want it to end because it's painfully bad.  And the pitboy interface is ugly and just makes you wanna avoid at all costs using it.

Then you arrive to Megaton, and you don't find one interesting character and everything is so ugly, and you just want to blow the goddamn city, and you go to the hotel and you kill lots of dogs, and then you nuke megaton, and then i didn't want to play more.

Seriously, i have no desire whatsoever of playing the game again.

BUT, it supposedly has none of that strange humor like Fallout 2 had. AND it's made by Bethesda, who made that rotting pile of shit Oblivion. Oh, and everyone talks and moves like a zombie.

All I wanted was Oblivion with guns.

Hopefully that's what happens.

Fallout 3 looks like it will be a title that may be well designed, but some people are going to hate it no matter what. Shit, the Fallout series almost has more nostalgia attached to it than a Nintendo game.

wtf

Fallout is a minor cult title in the general conscience of gamers. I think a lot of people are really overbuilding the popularity of the first two titles.

F3 is getting all this hype because it's a fps game with rpgs settings. It could had been called something else and people who still be very hyped about it.

I've played through Fallout and and have it with Fallout 2 purchased through GOG....I am a bit worried about Fallout 3 for the reasons Draft has mentioned.   Having said this, I'm hoping Bethesda can pull this off to be more than Oblivion with guns or I'll be disappointed.

I'm torn between buying this and Red Alert 3 on October 28.  I don't have time for two games on one day.

I don't think that making it 'Fallout 3' was only a problem for name association.  I'm guessing that the VATS shit was probably because they didn't want to veer off too much from an RPG and it's really a shame.

Yeah it makes no sense to call the game Fallout 3.

It is basically a new vision for the fallout series.  Not enough hardcore fallout fans left to care if it is a direct sequel or not.

I expect it'll be huge, clunky, ugly, and bug-ridden, just like Oblivion.  But I'm looking forward to it.  The VATS is the only major thing that looks like total ass - I'm hoping to get by without it mostly.

Some shadows would be nice too, but eh, it's Bethesda.

It was bad enough playing Oblivion with only a handful of voice actors, but seeing the Fallout 3 videos with lizard man's voice coming out of the bartender or whatever is pretty jarring.

I probably have the same preference.  I really enjoyed Oblivion, but it does really lack on variety in the overworld, being basically all forest and undulating ground.  Something like a cliff, ravine, waterfall, or overhang would have been nice (there are a couple of little waterfalls, but I mean there literally are "a couple").  In spite of that, I still like strolling around exploring.

The characters are really ugly, although it is possible to create a good male character for yourself.

Don't worry, game is great, been playing it whole weekend.Game is technically better than Oblivion, only thing that some people might(will) hate is its art. There is no rain, world fells really lonely, everything is black, grey and dirty, covered in ashes.

The game fells more like Morrowind(music, feel of loneliness, what the hell am i suppose to do next).

Also game can be really creepy sometimes.
And the world is bigger than Poland :D

Crysis Warhead was the last game.

Good A.I. is a great thing.  Coming from Crysis, seeing those guys standing there not doing shit is repulsive.  On the other hand, games can be fun without good A.I.

The truth is out there:

http://www.nma-fallout.com/article.php?id=45725

Quote
From what I've seen, Fallout 3 does not have any of the qualities of the previous episodes. But that was to be expected. However, it has none of the diffuse magic of the Elder Scrolls series. It feels like Bethesda made a break with this new title, a sad bend towards products multiplying "fan service", the dumb, goofy stuff that will make the client laugh, the "awsum roxxorz" elements and micro-gameplay to the detriment of world coherence and deeper mechanisms. To sum it all up, expect loads of shallow combat spoiled by VATS and slowmotion sequences as gore as pathetic, a terribly short main quest - a Spanish colleague has finished it in less than an afternoon, during his first playthrough - nice secondary quests, but which completely missed the intelligence and density of the series, the whole being flavored with failed occasions.

Quote
VATS slow motion may be the worst crime against video gaming since the invention of the auto-aim and checkpoint based save system.
I don't know what the people of Bethesda had in mind... Maybe they feared that the game would be too short and imposed a twenty seconds on us at each targeted shot to extend the gameplay length, maybe they really desire that we notice their face modeling with independent eye globes, maybe they simply suffer from blaring bad taste, from a love for Brotherhood of Steel they want to share at any price?

Quote
Lambda players will probably enjoy it. But, us? Well, we still cannot swallow it, this mucky heresy. Sure, I could destroy it, dip it into a vat of hatred just to clean the insult. But it wouldn't make it better. It wouldn't bring Black Isle back. So if you don't mind, I'm going to stop here and have a drink at the café of broken dreams.

Quote
Most locations you can discover are "raider dungeons". City ruins are copy-paste of the same and only model, here and there flavored by the same and only model of tricycle (the very poetic "Red Ryder") and even worse, the main quest will get you through an Hellgate London-ish nightmare in which you had to pass through kilometers of underground for hours and hours.

Reference to Hellgate...OUCH!

I'm sure the US Media will overrate this game since they would like to get a job at Bethesda.

Thankfully it sounds like the main quest is short so I can rent it, finish it, and return it in a couple weeks.  Save myself 60 dollars.
