My psychologist didn't know who Marshall McLuhan was
« on: October 14, 2008, 05:20:20 PM »
I mean, I know he wasn't a psychologist or anything, but I figured he'd be a figure that popped up at some point in your studies if you like, examined human psychology as filtered by modern society.  Do they not teach people these sorts of things in schools?

Seems like he would be a staple of many discussions that relate to psychology; media theory goes hand in hand with psychology

you have a psychologist?

I can't recall his name ever coming up in any classes I took--and McLuhan was Canadian.   :cancry

edit: checked the name indices of a couple of my old psych textbooks and his name isn't listed in any of them.

They made a movie about him, We Are Marshall. He was a coach used psychology to inspire his team after a bunch of them got killed in a plane crash. It was really good.

As far as I understand it McLuhan is kind of a stand alone theorist who didn't engage with many of the prominent critical theorists, and hence his work has suffered a bit of neglect.

I don't remember him being mentioned in any of my psychology or sociology courses. I just looked him up on Wiki, though. Sounds like an interesting individual.

He only came up because he asked about my favorite movies and I started talking about Videodrome, btw.  Looking at the wiki page, I'm a bit surprised he hasn't earned a "sociologist" label.

I had to go to one when I was 16 or so. My mom thought I was having problems since I wasn't talkative; I'm a naturally reserved guy, like very much so. Anyway by the end of the sessions I convinced him that my parents didn't know shit about shit, and I was perfectly fine

I think some friends of mine who are in the critical studies program at the art institute told me about this guy.  Haven't heard about him once through my sociology program though. From Cliché to Archetype (1970) sounds like great stuff...added it to my amazon wish list.

I'm getting some good ideas for American Heritage commercials.  How about one, in the situation room in the White House.  It's WWII, and Truman is sitting over a table looking at maps of Japan.  A harried messenger runs in and says, "Mr. Truman, Mr. Truman, the President is dead!  You're the new Commander in Chief."  Truman rubs his chin and appears to be staring into the distance, pondering.  He immediately turns to a general in the room and says, "Good.  Let's kill some nips.  Drop the fucking bomb."

Cue Hiroshima stock footage.

Not really.  It's just the time released version of Xanax, brand new, so there's no generic equivalent, so if a doctor prescribes it, your insurance company has to foot for the brand name rather than the good ol, generic alprazolam.

nice.  so I can be a drooling mess on a time release basis.  This could have strategic value.

Xanax is great, was kinda hooked to it one summer a few years ago.
