As someone who has had to go through seemingly every annoying, drawn out part of naturalization, on some days I really resent the idea that some people are just going to be allowed to slip through the entire system on unlawful terms, without consequence. Give them probationary permanent resident status and a tax penalty, some executive, large scale penalty. And while I understand that it's more difficult for some to get work visas than it may be for people of other nationalities, that's hardly without its reasons.

That said, most of the time I don't give much of a shit about it.

I think the answer is easy.  We just give all illegal immigrants rights as Proto Citizens.  They still have to pay some sort of taxes, but they don't get access to the benefits full citizens get, like, you know, social security, any potential UHC, nor a minimum wage.  If they want to live here doing the godawful jobs no sane person wants to do for shit wages, why not let them as long as we codify them and strip them of any meaningful rights and power?  I think many of the tangible problems of living in a modernized society of capitalism can be solved with a healthy, official caste system.

I would argue that once companies become publicly traded entities, a lot of our traditional capitalistic notions need to be revised. A big problem right now is that publicly traded corporations are required to seek maximum profits by the fiduciary relationship they have with shareholders. While that sounds good on paper, it leads to problems. You'll have companies "streamlining" labor in order to maintain that 8% profit margin instead of letting it dip to 7.25%. It's my honest opinion that companies need to take care of their own first before they take care of the shareholders, because as much as we'd like to say they do, shareholders don't really "own" the company in a traditional sense. Most of them have no stake at all in the company aside from its profit margins and share prices. They aren't willing to make the kind of sacrifices that an actual "owner" might make, and they aren't in it for the long haul. The whole fiduciary relationship needs to be rethought a bit.

You're not the only one who thinks along these lines.  I've long maintained that the entire speculative financial system -- "stock markets," the very notion of incorporation (believe it) etc. -- needs to be abolished (or at least heavily reformed) and replaced with something more sustainable, because of the unique pressures it exerts on its participants.  What you describe is one of the primary stressors.  Even the most profitable of companies will eventually succumb to the obstreperous cries of its "shareholders" for greater profits; the desire for greater margins is insatiable.  There's no fix for that except changing the entire system.  But that's tied to our culture too, viz. the prevailing intemperance of our populace, which manifests itself in a great many areas.

Words are in quotes not because they do not exist, or are some sort of euphemism, but because I view these things with disdain.  People can think I'm crazy all they want, but mark my words that you won't see real change until you address the above issues.  This is probably the most radical belief that I have, but after considerable analysis and reflection I'm convinced of it.

So, after watching the debate, it was pretty apparent Obama wiped the floor with McCain. Obama pretty much answered the best two questions of the debate season the best to his ability while making McCain look starved for something to get his campaign back on track.

Those two questions, were, of course, the questions about the negative campaigns and the VP nominees. Although the VP question was much easier for Obama than it was for McCain, considering Palin is a fucking crazy bitch who's going to assuredly destroy the country every way she possibly can.

It's pretty disgusting to see the press latch on to McCain's largely empty "I'm not Bush" statement. No one has claimed that he is physically George W Bush. But his policies and his track record suggests that he might as well be, which is the whole point. But, again, people buy into the so typically Republican strategy of saying something, and hoping that just saying something will be enough to invalidate the whole argument.

Alot of McCain supporters gave CNN impressions that he seems more everyman than Obama. I thought the opposite is true, with McCain coming off as a politician and Obama like the everyman with sincerity, as the above exchange indicates.
