If 360 doesn't push close to 400k at least i will call bomba on the price drop.

If Ps3 doesn't pass the 200k mark i will call bomba on PS3.

Let's get the party rolling.

360 averaged about 70k per week, as Schulema points out (on the gaffo) taht's not really too accelerated over normal pace-- about 280k/w.

PS3 is total bomba of course.

Meh all around.

360 did solid, even thought i was expecting a bit closer to 400k, Ps3 did it's shitty over 200k standard.

Bah, whatever. GAP still very noticeable in the software sales though, Ps3 with only one title....which sold half of what the 360 version sold.

Unique Controls Put Wii at No. 1 for September NPD; Nintendo DS at No. 2

Backed by a variety of unique interfaces, Nintendo’s Wii™ console topped the U.S. video game hardware sales charts with nearly 687,000 units sold in September, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. Nintendo DS™ was the No. 2 best-selling system, with nearly 537,000 sold.

Wii enjoyed the biggest monthly unit sales increase with 234,000 more units sold in September than August. Wii also saw a year-over-year increase of more than 37 percent over September 2007.

Four games made for Nintendo systems placed in the top 10 best-selling games of the month, including Wii Fit™ at No. 2 with nearly 518,000 sold, Mario Kart™ Wii at No. 4 with more than 353,000 sold, Wii Play™ at No. 7 with nearly 243,000 sold and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for Wii at No. 8 with more than 223,000 sold.

“The four Wii games in the top 10 all feature controls just not possible on other video game systems,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “The Wii Balance Board and Wii Wheel give players new ways to interact with their games, while the Wii Remote controller transforms into a pool cue, table tennis paddle or lightsaber. Consumers have truly responded to this variety of entertainment options.”

PS3 Sales Setting the Stage for a Solid Holiday Season; Total PlayStation Sales Up 20 Percent Year-Over-Year
PlayStation 3 Hardware Unit Sales Top 232,408
PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) again experienced consistent momentum in September 2008, with 232,408 hardware units sold according to The NPD Group, an increase of over 94% year-over-year and an increase of more than 25% over the previous month. Additionally, software sales for PS3 experienced year-over-year growth of 130% with 1.72 million units sold.
Software sales are expected to continue their upward projection in October as SCEA kicks off the holiday season with the highly anticipated launches of LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, and NBA ’09: The Inside.
PlayStation®Network remained a popular destination with newly added games and entertainment content such as WipEout HD, Linger in Shadows and PAIN: Amusement Park. There are currently more than 12 million registered accounts worldwide and over 240 million pieces of content have been downloaded worldwide.
PSP also experienced strong sales, with 238,056 hardware units sold.
Fueled by enthusiasm for the limited-edition LEGO Batman: The Videogame PlayStation®2(PS2) Pack, PS2 generated solid sales in September, with 173,527 hardware units sold, 20% growth from last month. An impressive 42.9 million PS2s have been sold in the U.S. as of September 2008.

Power of the PlayStation Portfolio
The PlayStation brand experienced strong sales across all three platforms, earning $379 million in September.
Year-to-date (Jan-Sept), the PlayStation brand has generated $4.03 billion in revenue, representing an increase of 20% year-over-year.
PlayStation total hardware revenue was $160.5 million in September, representing a year-to-year growth of 11%.
PlayStation total software revenue in September was $180 million, representing a year-to-year growth of 17%.

CEO Perspective

“We remain confident that our footing is solid as we enter the holiday season this year. Our new 80GB PS3 model has made its way to retail shelves and into consumers’ living rooms as the best value for both their gaming and entertainment needs. If the impressive pre-sale numbers and ratings for LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, and Resistance 2 are any indication, we anticipate hardware and software sales to continue to lift in October as we officially kick off the broadest and deepest software line-up this holiday, including LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift and NBA ’09: The Inside.

Boring numbers are boring.

Regarding video game sales for this holiday and 09, they have to start tailing off eventually.  Growth has been at an astronomical rate and things can't keep up forever.  Growing much faster than other entertainment formats.  Even if sales start leveling off, this is still a big chunk of money being spent.

It's never really had to go through a real recession.  The last one, in the late 80s/early 90s, was on the cusp of the 8/16 bit gens, so it is difficult to say whether it had any effect.

Oh and just look at the relase list for the next month....it IS crazy.

Publishers need to stop cramming so much shit into such a small window.

Next three weeks:

Fable 2
Far Cry 2
LBP
Fallout 3
Motorstorm 2
Resistance 2
Gears 2
Mirrors Edge
Tomb Raider
Red Alert 3
Left 4 Dead

Dead Space, Saints Row 2 just came out.  It is publishers own damn fault for pushing so many games out in such a tiny window.  Bombs are deserved.  I will enjoy it too when I get a ton of 30 dollar games in January.

This first wave of HD gaming is going to go down as a disaster. Sony and Microsoft are leaving so much money on the table that they won't turn a profit for a long time, if ever. Certain companies are obviously doing well thanks to bankable IPs but that's not the norm. Many smaller companies did well with the PS2/Xbox thanks to low development costs and reasonable pricing; not the case anymore

What's the benefit of developing a no name PS3 title right now? Developing for the Wii you may not make money but you sure as hell won't lose any

That's like saying that a low budget movie has a better chance at making a buck going direct to dvd than spending money on being released in cinema theaters.

No shit? Not every game will make profit, just like not every movie makes profit. Why some people find the thought outrageous is beyond me.

i'm not sure the analogy with films works too well.

Fundamentally solid and engaging gameplay can be created at a relatively low cost, the game won't potentially be as polished or as deep/complicated as a large budget title, but you can make something addictive and popular. Peggle springs to mind and those popcap thingies.

... actually it does work doesn't it? lol. That's just a mirror of indie films - but i think games , for whatever reason, do better. I guess perhaps down to the larger price differential between those games and big name games.

But how do those type of games sell, and are publishers interested in marketing them or will they just finance a small developer to try to make the next Gears, or the next Halo, etc?

Or like T.V shows that sell like gangbusters on DVd. I just think that this industry still hasn't realized that if you wanna do a really big game and you want it to make a lot of money, then you better make a game that can compete with other big games.

Doesn't matter if you spend 50 million dollars in your game if it looks like a crappy game. The Golden Watch (?) had a mega budget behind it and it tanked at the box office, why? Because it was a lame movie.

Bombs happen. If the funding channel of the industry can't cover it, then there's something wrong with the channel. Everyone has been saying for years that the Industry needs to adopt another model for funding games, a publisher dropping 50 on its own in a game just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I think the 360 price drop was meant to make it stop selling 200k a month. We will see what happens from now on.

but what do they need to do now? (that they haven't yet done?)

i mean MS is the only company that, other than making a crappy RRoDying hardware, made all the right choices/decisions:

- price
- hardware easy to develop games for (very close to PC)
- first party titles... and gears (soon to be a flagship title, dethroning halo imo)
- online
- Arcade
- OS
- swaying Japanese devs and even securing exclusives

i mean if i were them i'd be out of ideas, poor guys :(

Now they need to keep going with the flow man. Try to bring even better games, and sure try some of that casual shite too, try to offer both, try to keep expanding the online functionality.

If they do that they will keep making existing fans happy, and however slowly, make new fans happy, which means that next gen they will have a bigger fanbase ready to take the next step with them.

Look, you don't need to be the biggest club in the world in order to be a big club. Life goes on, you always try the next big thing. Look at Warner Brothers, Batman Begins did "ok" all things considered, then TDK came and bam.

It's business, nothing ever stops, there's always the next move.

I do think you're going to see a lot more 40-50 dollar games starting in January, and quicker price drops, but really that isn't going to sustain anyone in the long run.  i do think that companies that have an aggressive budget (Wii) lineup coupled with downloadable titles are going to do a lot better, but I expect a pretty big implosion of the companies heavily invested in next-gen (especially EA).

already happening. pure and IU are already retailing at cut rates. it's a good thing imo, but we must save ea

I know this is anectdotal evidence, but i have three friends with ps3s, one with a Wii, and one (soon to be two over the holidays) with (a) 360(s).  Only one of them regularly buys games (she's the one with a 360/PS3/Wii), and that's only because she gets discounts and privileges where she works (take a guess).  If what you're saying comes to pass, my other two friends will start buying new games, because right now they wait for those games to hit the $40 (or less) mark used - if they buy at all. I really do think it will help more than you seem to think, because I believe the majority of "sometimes gamers" fit the mold of my two PS3-owning friends.  I myself will be more apt to try games I otherwise would have given a pass to or waited for a drop (Dead Space).  It's going to take a few big games to push a $40-50 price point from "It's cheap so it must suck" to "That's a good deal," though.  Also, less hardware skus.  Both my friends were confused as hell when they went to buy PS3s, even when I explained the differences, so they just went the cheapest route.  People don't want to do research, they just want to walk into a store and walk out a few minutes later with a system and a couple of games.  That, in my opinion, is what really fucked this gen from the get-go in regards to sales (along with "lol that thing is too goddamned expensive").

Oh and just look at the relase list for the next month....it IS crazy.

Publishers need to stop cramming so much shit into such a small window.

Next three weeks:

Fable 2
Far Cry 2
Resistance 2
Mirrors Edge

I would have bought every single one of these games had they been spaced throught the usual Jan-April drought, now I'm not buying any

And the several million people who don't buy games at all during that time wouldn't buy them.

There's a happy medium in there though. Games absolutely can be successful in even the summer, so I think maybe moving some of the games that we all know are going to get buried-- Motorstorm 2-- to February or even June, would make sense.

Loading up the holiday season makes sense, sure. But if just one of those games moved to the dry period, I bet everyone would be more successful.

I don't believe that

Before Jaws, there was no such thing as a Summer blockbuster movie

Studios didn't release their big films in the Summer months, it was assumed no one wanted to sit in a theater when they could be out in the sun

I believe the same could be true for games

An April release didn't seem to hurt GTAIV sales

but, hey, why should I complain, I'll pick up Mirror's Edge for $30 in March
