Welcome to 1998
« on: October 17, 2008, 05:53:36 AM »
Yo guys, Netscape Navigator 5.0 is about to launch!  It's going to destroy Internet Explorer!  Haha, stupid Microsoft, have you seen these funny Microsoft Jokes?

I just started up my own webpage on Angelfire, it's really cool, but still under construction!  I need to add more animated pictures.  It's best displayed at 800x600 resolution.  I also got a new free Email from Juno!

Anyone want to join my webring?  I need to get a lot of people interested so they can find me on Hotbot!

Time to go on Sega.com and play free flash versions of awesome games like Last Bronx and Sonic!  I can't believe we can play games so easily!

Oh yea, you guys hear of this new Internet thing called Netzero?  Man, free internet, AOL has gotta be worried about that!

Oh well, I'm gonna go read my newsgroups to check out the latest videogame discussion!

I am also listening to Mansun "Six" -- i regurgitate lines like "I'm emotionally raped by Jesus", and "life is a compromise anyway" on a daily basis, and relisten to "attack of the grey lantern" every now and then. I think they're going to become this really awesome popular band in the future ...  :-\

Its been a year but I'm still listening to OK Computer a lot and forcing it on everyone who will listen. Best album EVAR.

I am also playing Final Fantasy VII. I've called everyone in my party stupid names. Why doesn't Barrett have pupils in his eyes on the status screen? Why can't I kill that thing in the desert and that thing under the sea? I'm determined to plough stupid amounts of time into finding out. I hear I can get this awesome attacking materia on some little island somewhere...

Aerosmith have just released "I don't wanna miss a thing" and chantel kreviazuk has just done a good cover of "Leaving on a jet plane" - both for the Armageddon soundtrack. Baddiel and Skinner have just released the "Three Lions on a shirt" song and some think we might actually win the world cup ...  :-\

I actually just got my first girlfriend. I'm a bit shy though, and it probably won't last ...  :-\ She's lovely though  :D

I was in my junior year of high school, doing my thing, working part-time at the game shop, and nerding out on the internet on usenet and the DHP Neo-Geo mailing lists.  Time was spent with friends going to the movies and playing shitloads upon shitloads of video games.  This was the last great year for arcades in Atlanta.  I drove out 40 minutes twice to go play SFA3.  I got KOF '98 and orgasmed over how amazing it was (and still is).  Metal Gear Solid came out.  Bust-A-Move Dance & Rhythm action was fucking awesome.  Good times.

I'm not doing a damn thing.  Just graduated in the summer from High School.  Just started college.  A 2 year college.  I'm sure I won't regret that down the road.  2 years > 4 years!  Shit's so Easy, even a caveman could do it.  I'm listening to OK Computer, and playing MGS.  I probably should think about what I want to do in the future, though...I'll get to that later on, I'll probably have more time then...

Junior year of high school, friend just gave me a cassette tape with all this "house music" he is into. I still love heavy metal and will always love it... but this song "Around the World" and this other song "Children" and this other song "One More Night" by Amber are all fucking sick. Gonna go home and play some SaGa Frontier, wander around aimlessly and level up a bit, after slogging through HS barely awake. Perhaps I'll go ice skating this Friday and try to get a girl's phone # like I did last week. Too bad that last one kept talking about Jesus Camp and preached to me about her love for the lord Christ on the phone.

you went from metal to trance?

on the outside that's wacky, but I can totally see it.  a lot of the same elements in progressive/symphonic metal and trance.

i don't even want to think about 1998

Well, actually it was more like metal (Metallica/Megadeth/Pantera/Slayer), hard rock and 90's alternative (Rage/Nirvana/RHCP/Offspring) to eurodance and house, first. Trance and progressive came later for me, like in the beginning of 1999. Although during my metal-listening years I got the "UFOrb" and "The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld" based on recommendations from a friend who had a brother living in the UK at the time, and loved them.

1998 you say?

Weezer is awesome.

I find out the hard way that public schools are fucking full of shit, and full of preferential treatment towards those cocksucking assholes who fucked with me because their parents made a big bunch of money.

WCW was still sorta good but WWF was taking off.

OCARINA OF TIME HOLY SHIT ITS AWESOME

Uh, that's about it really.

It's my senior year of high school. I just got back from spending the summer volunteering on a kibbutz in Israel. I can't wait for the new Star Wars movie! I've finally decided that there are more bands aside from Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead. I've been listening to lots of Pulp, Manic Street Preachers, Blur and Mansun, and there is this new band called Placebo that sounds pretty cool. I'm dating this really awesome girl who I've had a crush on for years, and come to find out she loves all the same stuff that I do. I'm taking the SAT pretty soon, and I need to get my application sent into the University of Washington before Christmas vacation. I really wish I had a Playstation so I could play Final Fantasy VII, but it's coming out for the PC soon, so I can wait, I guess. Back to playing more X-wing Alliance! Some kid in my Japanese class heard that a new Gundam show is starting in Japan next year, and it's directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino!

Fast forward to now:

1. Episode 1 sucked. Took me a long time to admit it. I'm also no longer a Star Wars fanboy and don't care about the franchise other than it being a fond childhood memory.
2. I broke up with that girl in February after she never wanted to hang out, and she ditched me for her boring friends on New Year's Eve. Plus, she had a strange obsession with horses.
3. I finished out my freshman year at the University of Washington and then transferred to a small private school.
4. I've abandoned PC gaming and returned to consoles after sitting out the PS1/Saturn/N64 era.
5. GUNDAM: Some things never change.  :-[

It's 1998 and I'm convincing all my friends that Daydream Nation is truly the best album of all time, but they won't listen.  (it has since been knocked to like top 5 or 10-ish.)

I've been to about three classes during the last two weeks. I stand in a large hole that I dug for myself. That's where I stand!  :maf

So yeah, I've been to three classes during the last four weeks, and none during the last three.

All I remember from 1998 is that a lot of good games came out that year.  I have to do the math and figure out what grade I was in at that time, then things would start coming back to me.

A boring, uneventful year but I was in 7th and 8th grade.

- Got a new computer and connected at a blazingly fast speed of 26400 bps
- First discovered emulators and played the shit out of them on the weekends
- Started posting on gaming forums
- No gaming systems
- Being a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow rebel and turning down all kinds of academic opportunities, in spite of getting "Post High School" level scores for Math and English

I don't have a clue what I was doing.  Skipping uni and playing Ocarina of Time and Dark Forces sounds likely.

Probably got the internet around that time as well - didn't come out of my room for about two days solid.
