SCEE has supplied us with the official statement on the situation regarding LittleBigPlanet…

During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur’an. We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence that this may have caused.

We will confirm the new launch date shortly.

We’ll keep you updated with further information as soon as we get it.

UPDATE

We’ve just been informed by SCEE that the delay to release is effective worldwide.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/littlebigplanet-release-delayed-in-europe
LittleBigPlanet release delayed in Europe

The release of Sony's highly anticipated PlayStation 3 title LittleBigPlanet has been delayed in Europe.

The game was due for release next week, October 24, but now some retailers are estimating the game may be delayed by three weeks until November 14.

However, GamesIndustry.biz understands that the title may not suffer such a long delay to retail, and a new date is expected to be announced by Sony shortly.

LittleBigPlanet has reviewed incredibly well in the specialist press and anticipation is high from consumers who have already had access to the beta of the game.

Sony has said that the game is a system seller for the PlayStation 3, and the title is considered one of the most important releases for the home console this Christmas.

More details to follow.

Some are saying it's because of a particular song: http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:BuPMgf6T4UIJ:community.eu.playstation.com/playstationeu/board/message%3Fboard.id%3D611%26message.id%3D8388+%22tapha+Niang%22+quran&hl=da&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=dk

Quote from: solid08
To: Sony Computer Entertainment & Media Molecule

While playing your latest game, "LittleBigPlanet" in the first level of the third world in the game (titled "Swinging Safari":smileywink:, I have noticed something strange in the lyrics of the music track of the level. When I listened carefully, I was surprised to hear some very familiar Arabic words from the Quran. You can listen to part of the track here:

mt14.quickshareit.com/share/p...lip22503c0.wav

The words are:

1- In the 18th second: "كل نفس ذائقة الموت" ("kollo nafsin tha'iqatol mawt", literally: 'Every soul shall have the taste of death').

2- Almost immediately after, in the 27th second: "كل من عليها فان" ("kollo man alaiha fan", literally: 'All that is on earth will perish').

I asked many of my friends online and offline and they heard the exact same thing that I heard easily when I played that part of the track. Certain Arabic hardcore gaming forums are already discussing this, so we decided to take action by emailing you before this spreads to mainstream attention.

We Muslims consider the mixing of music and words from our Holy Quran deeply offending. We hope you would remove that track from the game immediately via an online patch, and make sure that all future shipments of the game disk do not contain it.

We would also like to mention that this isn't the first time something like this happened in videogames. Nintendo's 1998 hit "Zelda: Ocarina of Time" contained a musical track with islamic phrases, but it was removed in later shipments of the game after Nintendo was contacted by Muslim organizations. Last year, Capcom's "Zack & Wiki" and Activision's "Call of Duty 4" also contained objectionable material offensive to Muslims that was spotted before the release of the final games, and both companies thankfully removed the content.

We hope you act immediately to avoid any confusion and unnecessary controversy, and we thank you for making such an amazing game.

Regards,
yasser

just came here to post this...how could anyone possibly think adding Quran verses is a good idea, especially to a high profile game.

Also, the guy who reported the problem is actually a Microsoft spy trying to sabotage the game.

I'm sure the SFX library that sample comes from doesn't list it as from the Quran, otherwise nobody in their right mind would use it in their compositions.

So within 12 hours of hearing about this issue involving a lyric (in Somalian, I believe!), we prepared an automatic day 0 patch and had a new disk image ready; however a decision was made within Sony that the right thing to do for quality and support of people with no on-line was to replace existing disks.

SMH

MM had a patch ready and everything.

Actually, a patch (which requires an online connection) is not sufficient to defuse the situation. If you have people that are sensitive enough to be offended by the presence of the two lines, then what makes you think they'll be happy with a solution that requires people to connect to the internet and patch? Even a mandatory patch won't reach everyone.

I don't like the idea of a recall, but it has to happen if Sony has chosen that as the way to deflect this situation. I'd like just for once to a company not to compromise "art" for the sake of "religion."

It's background music in the game, and apparently not especially easy to make out. Sackboy isnt running around quoting the Qur'an.

Can you imagine what will happen if someone makes a LBP level with Sackboy dressed as Muhammad running around spouting quotes from the Qur'an

LBP is ripe for that type of abuse, and delaying it over something offensive to Muslims is bound to cause someone to do it.

It did.

You fast roped into the center during a mass prayer. Everyone starts to panic as terrorists ambush your team from all sides. You have to survive the onslaught for several minutes before Jerry the teams tech guru realizes that the big black thing in the center is actually a doorway to the secret terrorist bunker. You then have to go down there and fight your way through waves of terrorists all the way to the big control center.
You plant a charge on the main super computer and then escape in under 30 seconds.
Epic level.

now i know y'all hate someone talking about Islamic teachings atm but bear with me:

one of the basics of Islamic teachings is called "الامر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر" which basically means (roughly translated): "Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice"

and it's something that every Muslim should practice.

but here's the interesting part: there are three levels of carrying this over, and has to be done in this order:

1- Prevention of Vice with your "hand": you do this if you have the influence or you're in a position to make call (e.g: a CEO or a government official) =/= violence and burning flags.

now the first level of prevention does not apply to Mr. Yasser, so moves to second level.

2- Prevention of Vice with "tongue": you don't have to power to change stuff with your hand? then voice your inconvenience by voicing you dissatisfaction.

and this is what devout Mr. Yasser has done... but! what if Sony says "no"? then he moves to level 3.

3- Prevention of Vice by "heart": in other words, no one complied? then be dissatisfied on the inside and STFU!!

Long Story Short: Yasser did the right thing as a devout Muslim, Sony has EVERY RIGHT to say no, Yasser becomes one inconvenienced customer and shut the fuck up (or go and complain to the press = another "tonge" to do their part).

in other words: NO ONE SHOULD BLOW ANY FUCKING THING UP. THOSE WHO DO ARE NOT TRUE MUSLIMS, THEY'RE TERRORISTS!! I HATE EVERYONE FEARING US AND TREATING US DIFFERENTLY.

if we don't want to play by the rules that apply to others then we should not play at ALL, let's shut ourselves in our bubble of isolation and let everyone live in piece.

I wish Himuro would follow this and shut his mouth up, it would certainly make him more tolerable

There's nothing in the Bible that says scripture can't be quoted outside of a religious context. One shall not take the Lord's name in vain-- nobody gives a shit about what Paul says.

You have to see what's actually offensive here to notice why this seems extreme. There is no commentary on the lines themselves, and this is not a comment on the faith-- it's a direct quotation.

It'd be like if someone quoted "blessed are the meek" and "one shall not lie with man as one does with woman" in a stage or something.
