Would you steal bread to feed your starving family? The answer to this question is easy: yes, provided there were no other reasonable alternatives. While theft is wrong, letting your family starve to death is worse. Would you, however, sell marijuana to maintain your family's plush suburban lifestyle?

Although marijuana should be legal, it isn't. Botwin should not act in a hypothetical world in which marijuana is legalized, but the real one. In this real world, by growing and distributing marijuana she runs the risk of being arrested by the police or assaulted or murdered by rival drug dealers/gangs, leaving her fatherless children without either one of their parents.

And she doesn't just deal drugs to maintain her large suburban house, her pool, and her Hispanic maid; she does it because she enjoys the danger and excitement. She enjoys dealing with dangerous men, many of whom she's fucked (see the crooked DEA agent, crooked developer, Hispanic drug dealer, and a drug grower). She enjoys the cutesy, clueless MILF bullshit (for a show that enjoys poking fun at phoney bullshit, Nancy's dealings with gang members is the phoniest parts of the show).

Of course, running a drug business out of her home eventually causes her children to become part of the business, resulting in Silas becoming a drug dealer and grower himself, who gets beat up by a biker gang.

How does she solve the problem of the biker gang? Not by getting her hands directly dirty, but by getting some bad men to fix the problem--as she usually does--only to act shocked when they fuck things up. (Well, she did get her hands dirty when she burnt down the house; however, in general she gets other men to do bad things for her)

Finally, she's too preoccupied with her bullshit lifestyle to pay any attention to her youngest child. Her inattentiveness causes him to bring his father back to life, so that at least one of his parents talks to him.

As I look back on my life--just before I finally pull the trigger--at least I won't feel the kind of shame that comes with being a regular anime viewer.

Jesus you've been depressed lately.  Go see someone!

Also, from the two sentences I read of you op, you seem to be in a philosophical mood so today i got back my philo midterm.  I got criticized by using the word "rationalize" to talk about Plato and Aristotle reasoning.  She got all bitchy and said it meant "to use reason to justify an unsound position", then told the class to look up the word.  I know it means this two but clearly that's not what I meant in the way I was using it.  So I looked it up and my definition is perfectly fine too.  GRRR

Anyways i also said that Plato has connects reason and knowledge to virtue in a fuzzy way.  She said I was wrong and that I should "look it up".  But isn't this exactly what the sun metaphor, and the "a to b" metaphor is about?

I dislike the show for many of your reasons - mostly because the main characters are completely unlikeable.

Words have connotations, and the connotation for "rationalize" is negative.

Plato does connect knowledge with virtue. To be good, we need to know the difference between apparent goods and real goods. If we are ignorant, stuck in the world of imagination and perception, we are likely to commit evil. If we are knowledgeable, in touch with the higher forms thanks to direct apprehension, we are likely to do good. Or some shit.

With a drama, unlike a comedy, this is a very bad thing.

Kevin Nealon's character and Conrad are moderately likable.

Did Conrad ever come back for the third season? I stopped watching when the ridiculous plot of the secret tunnel to mexico and the president fucking nancy story came in.

Also I wish weed was legal, because then this show would be hilarious.

Thanks for the spoiler. Because I have never heard of the tunnel and president shit, that's obviously in season four, which I have not watched yet.

Right but he doesn't say exactly how this apprehension works.  Instead he maneuvers over the issue using a metaphor.  And in the context in which i was using rationalized was clearly not negative!  I'm going to throw my dictionary at her next class!  (ya,not that I use it anyways, knew you we're going to say that.).

Oh my bad, I thought that was Season 3.

Don't worry though, they're not major spoilers.

those are big spoilers but I didn't feel that the mayor-fucking and the tunnel were too ridiculous.

the show starts out with Nancy selling to her friends enough to allow them to live in the same neighborhood but as she interacts more with criminals, she gets attracted to them.  that could be because criminals want to use her.  she's a middle-aged white woman so it would make more sense for them to employ her rather than rape her.  although she's not the most likable person ever, she doesn't seem as stupid and self-centered in the 4th season.  A LOT happens in that season.

My wife and I love the show. It's one of the few shows we watch together. I usually get some laughs from the show. Not so much in this past season though.

The sound the goat makes. :-\ :'( :'( :'(

Got bored of it by mid-season 2.  It's already a very flimsy premise for a show, I can't believe they keep it going.  She sells like an ounce a season and maintains her upper 5% lifestyle. :lol

Kevin Nealon is awesome though.
