Have you thought about maybe looking into some local artists to create some original work to display?   :)

I really wouldn't know where to begin.  At the moment, I don't know exactly what I'm looking for, so putting it into words would be difficult.  I am sure I could figure out what I want--I am just in a "Let's buy pre-made prints!" mood, so I haven't even considered the custom option.

Thinking about it now, and this will sound cheesy and lame, but I like the style these old pictures have.  I mean, when I ask someone to do something "like Goya would" I'm really just wanting Goya himself.  And although I'm not a religious person, I like the religious, church-y influence in a lot of these older paintings.  I was raised Catholic, and although I consider the church garbage, I have an admiration for the art sensibilities that grew around it.

tvc...you had me at 'Bacon' :drool

but that is some amazing stuff. I need to read up on this.

He's an awesome painter.  One of my 20th century favorites.  He has his ups and downs, but his best work seems so intense to me, and in some cases intensely emotive.

I might also just get a giant printo of Picasso's Guernica, but I feel that is a bit too common for me.  Even still, it's a very effective painting, and it still strikes my interest every time I see it.  You kind of get a tolerance to some paintings, but Guernica is forever wowsome.  Picasso's Old Guitarist is also a contender.  That painting feels so weary and worn, like some sort of dirge.  It feels like the painting of someone that knows the world, and Picasso was only like 20 when he did it.  Gets me every fucking time.

Ok, I am going to go slightly off topic and make a suggestion:

What about displaying some of your own work?  Like your photographs.  It's always more interesting with the artist right in front of you (for guests to your office). Plus it would be much more personal and ,depending on the art, can really reflect certain feelings and points of view that you are trying to communicate with displaying art to begin with.

Just an idea.   :)

I do like the idea.  It has me thinking that I've been approaching certain things incorrectly.  As far as visuals go, I have to say I don't find what I'm looking for in the real world, so my photography is largely not representative of what I'm looking for.  And I can't draw.  Writing is what I do, and for whatever reason, I'm avoiding or haven't considered trying to write what I'd like to *look* at, which I find rather curious.  As mentioned before, I'd have difficult (at the moment) describing what specifically I am looking for since I have been looking at this from a perspective of "I'll know what I want when I see it."

In the most basic, broadest terms, I like surrealism and expressionism that is grounded enough in real world imagery.  I like trauma and I like themes revolving around death and loss.  I think the reason I don't write around those themes is because I consider them trite and emo.  I also like transgression, gore, and violence.  A personal element to this would have to do with the lack of self-identity.  I have never felt like a person and I have never known what I am like.  I don't know who I am and I have never had the first clue.  No personal identity.  And I've been looking for years and years.

It is my own personal opinion that art is a part of the process to find one's identity.  Looking through any artist's portfolio of works you can see patterns in the thought process.  Even with the church's influence - as they did fund most of the work back in the day - you can see the artist's own perspective on life in the paintings/sculptures...etc.  That may be the element that makes them so attractive to so many people.  I always felt the more "honest" works of art to be the most alluring and beautiful.  Anyone can pay to have art created.  When the artist uses the opportunity to communicate to the world his/her own feelings though their work it becomes more than just pretty colors.  It has meaning and true passion.

That's why I like Bosch so much.  He's clearly doing art inspired by the church, but it's such a unique take on it that it must be personal.  People can draw cherubs on clouds and Jesuses wearing gold-lined robes all day, but that shit going on with the hollowed out skull and the weird ear thing?  That's not even close to anything even resembling church doctrine; that is straight up Bosch.

Do you know how physically large a 1080p image can be made while still looking good?  Because The Seventh Seal is on blu ray.  And that danse macabre shot is really bonerific.  Man, I love that movie.  Well, Persona is like, just as good, but you can't top the danse macabre shot or that shot of death with his arm horizontal.

At 1080p I believe the print at its normal print size would be 6.4x3.6 (@300DPI), 8x4.5(@240DPI). I've read people blowing up their pictures 2x their original size so I could see it possibly being good at 12" on the long end. As you go larger, the viewing distance would need to be farther back so you wouldn't notice blurring and crap.

The criterion cover to 3 women is sweet, too.  And some of the shots of the murals the one woman is painting in that movie would make for some great, eerie wall art, too.  I love that movie.

Yeah, Images is great, too.  I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite between them.  I think I'd side with 3 Women just because it has a pretty dense, dreamy, Lynch-lie atmosphere to it.  I bet there's also not a lot of stuff out there for Images in general since it was a lost film for like 20 years.

Hmmm, my 40D is in my car.  I should probably bring in a small camera.  I'd get nervous walking around the office with a hand cannon.

It is in a pelican case.  It is briefcase-y looking, so I could just unpack it in your office.

TVC, are you a fan of Magritte and the Belgian painters?  Their stuff displays pretty nicely.

If this was my office, I would probably put up a bunch of classical shiz. Classical, bright and detailed. I've always loved that style.

I like Magritte a lot but my favorites tend to have nudity and his non-nude stuff is kinda too college dormy for me.  Also, not intimidating or confrontational, really.

Yeah, I prefer his nudes, but I know that wouldn't be appropriate in an office environment, unless you were the owner or something.  Whatever you get, don't get the following overexposed travesty:

Verdict on this:

Can be cheaply had on ebay.  I might just nab it for my apartment, though.  This might be the art cigarillo film equivalent of lolis.
