Actually they show the backdoor in a bunch of episodes in Season 2. That is the same hatch; I'm pretty sure they went back in time

The smoke thing was one of the things I hated most. Seemed so forced, and it didn't look great in terms of special effects (smoke is kinda hard to do I suppose). It always seemed like this cheap way to make an excuse for not revealing info. Plus...
