Bioshock PS3
« on: October 22, 2008, 11:20:43 PM »
Aye I picked this up because I never did get to finish it on the X360 and its a decent 3rd party offering.

First the install time is fuck long. Like MGS4 long.

Other than that the game feels the same from what I can remember.

Seems like there are a few places with slight framerate hops that I cant seem to recall being in the X360 edition....not sure tho. Never during combat. It seems to happen when allot of stage items are being loaded.

Im either imaging things or it seems like there might be a few lighting additions. These things could have also been added to the other edition by now as I only played it when it first launched.

Worthy title for the collection for sure. I hope it delivers in the endgame.

Yeah its kinda cool PS3 ONLY owners get a chance to play this game. While its been victim of a vicious backlash from the various FICKLE-AGEs, I think its a solid experience that can be looked back on as a model of a good game.

I don't recall seeing a big backlash about the first 3/4th of the game.  I did really enjoy the game and am slowly replaying it again on PC, but the end bits of the game drag on a bit too long.  I'm also really interested in the sequel considering the lead guy behind it is the guy who did Fort Frolic (best part of the game).

I do like it, but compared to the amazing sections before it, the switch to escort missions, fetch quests, and random super saiyan boss battles was a bit of a let down.

I thought it was an awesome "experience", but the core combat got pretty repetitive towards the end and only the big daddy fights were really awesome and fun since you could make all sorts of traps and fight them differently each time.  The rest of the enemies just kind of charged at you and you blew them away in 1 shot.

All the combat needed IMO was instead of getting lvl.2/3 versions of plasmids that act the same and are just stronger, there should have just been 2/3x as many plasmids types and they don't level.  More enemy types would've helped too.

Still a great game for the mood, the environments, the story.  I hope Bioshock 2 gives the combat more depth though.

I would never call it a bad game, but I was pretty baffled to see so many critics and gamers alike talk about almost reverentially, as if it was somehow a revolutionary game. The world of Rapture is absolutely incredible, but the game itself, when measured against its predecessors (either at the hands of that same developer, or at the hands of other developers) it didn't feel like it had evolved much, if at all. And I honestly think it became a drag towards, in part due to the fact that the repeating missions and recycled events had by then slapped a big fat "video game" sign on the whole experience. But Rapture is one hell of a place.

I think what it comes down to is that most games dont even attempt to nail atmosphere. They spend so much time trying to become puzzle or reflex hybrid bullshit that they forget about the experience. I think that contrast really colors how people see games like Bioshock, where an insane amount of attention is put on atmosphere and not so much maybe on the gameplay mechanics, but certainly enough.

Its basically the same as sitting in a room with 8 people farting for an hour straight and someone opening the door for even a minute.

As I understand it, the game looks basically the same on both platforms, with some strengths and weaknesses unique to each platform.

wow you guys are so political ;)

Anyway I never got around to finishing it on X360 because I always have too much to play and at the time was more interested in other titles.

I like how the PS3 edition came in that 3D cardboard sleeve just like the X360 copy ;)

The colors are amazing in the game. I like lights and wonder what all of that would really look like under the sea.

I just killed Steinman :rock

Awesome fucking game.  Like MAF said the backlash on this one has been some of the craziest I have ever seen, but most of it came from die hard Sony partisans who wouldn't know a good game if it snuck into their pants and bit the soft skin of their asshole.
Unfortunately, most of the backlash actually seems to originate from those who demanded an exact duplicate of System Shock 2 and were disappointed when it was "dumbed down".  While Shock 2 is also a favorite of mine, I was able to enjoy Bioshock regardless of how things had changed.  It sure as hell wasn't another Invisible War...

The last 20 or so minutes of this game ruined it for me.
That's a pretty odd statement.  Sure, the end of the game was disappointing, but should that really ruin all of the good stuff that came before it?!

I mean, System Shock 2 had a significantly worse set of ending areas than Bioshock and most still love the game.  The Many ship was absolutely no fun to play through, looked like absolute dog shit, and completely changed the focus of the game.  It was akin to Xen in the original Half-Life.  Then, afterwards, you DO get a nice little treat with a quick run through a distorted version of the ship from the original System Shock only to face one of the worst boss fights ever (Shodan was such a good character, but that battle was just...beyond bad).  In comparison to Shock 2, the final moments of Bioshock are pure brilliance.

I can understand an ending having a bit of a negative impact on your overall experience, but I just don't understand how it could erase the enjoyment you received throughout the vast majority of the game.

Have you played/beaten the game before? While I agree with your statement in general, people who say "good til the end" are pretty spot on in Bioshock. There is a noticeable decline in all around quality once you hit about 2/3 of the way through the game. Its like 2K just ran out of time or money or inspiration or something.

Bioshock is a game, not a film.  The experience of playing a game is something that can't really be compared with a film.  A film lives and dies by how it tells its story, while there are many other qualities to a game.

They clearly have issues when it comes to completing a story.  Again, System Shock 2 (a classic held in high regard created by many of the same people), suffers from the exact same issue (worse, I'd say).

huh?  movies can have utter shit stories and get by on having good action, lots of special effects, or a license tie-in of some sort.  happens way too often.

dark1x is simply saying that games need to implement training montages with kick ass music over top.  The entire Big Daddy suit hunt at the end would have been 2 minutes in a film with hot crotch shots and a dramatic shot of him turning around to the music of Huey Lewis and the News.

And Uncharted was good, haters.

The funny thing about people is that they have their own opinion. If all they read is Tolkien and they don't like the Bioshock story, that doesn't mean their opinion is valid or invalid, its their opinion.

I am an incredibly big horror fan, and grew up reading lots of Clive Barker, Lovecraft and such, so I know what I really like in a "supernatural" sort of story. Bioshock hit it on most fronts and did a great job at it, but it just really died at the end. You know, you get attached to the little sisters, and the world itself, and to see it end with such a non-chelant attitude is heart breaking.

No, people having their own opinion isnt funny; its sad. They should all have my opinion, cause otherwise, wtf are they doing here.

You really didn't like NG2?  I thought that its bad parts were worse than DMC4 but its good parts were better too.

Overall, I thought NG2 was a great title for action fans if they're willing to overlook its technical flaws.

Bioshock does have a terrible boss, but not as terrible as System Shock 2's boss.

I replayed Bioshock a couple times. I wish it had been a little more RPG and little less FPS, but it's still a great game. Sucks that the PS3 version is so inferior.

While I merely troll NG because I think its fans are funny to mess with, I'm dead serious about Ninja Gaiden 2 being mediocre.

(did you cut a limb off?  press Y.  repeat. yawn.)

Ninja Gaiden 2 has better combat than Ninja Gaiden 1, it's just a shame that there are a lot of lame enemies to fight in lame areas with shitty bosses at the end.  The combat is still completely awesome and the few boss battles that are enjoyable are so much fun.  And on a technical level it was pretty bad.  I almost understood why Genji 2 was pimping real time weapon switching when NG2 would load when I touched the d-pad.
