For the PC?  Preview benchmarks have shown that the PC version runs really well.

I'm picking it up tomorrow on PC, but probably won't play it until the weekend.  Impressions sound really good and the game is doing so many things off my weird list of things I like in games.  You can get malaria! AWESOME!

I've designated it a Christmas present for myself what with all the other games coming out.  Really pumped for it though - I think it'll be awesome.  Oh, and the obligatory stupid animal video:

I like how they strive to keep the immersion as much as possible.  One thing I usually like in games is when the developer attempts to make the fullest of out of the first person perspective, and this game seems to be doing a lot of that.  When you're killed one of your friends comes in and drags you to safety in real time to heal you.  I'm also really a fan of shooters like Crysis and STALKER where a shoot out isn't so much going down a corridor or set location, but more about seeing a location surrounded with enemies and planning a head of time.  Far Cry 2 seems to be filled with all types of scenarios like that where you can even take out your map and mark the location of things in the world.

The only thing I don't like is that it seems to have a brown-ish filter over everything.

I got it for PC. Here's some screenshots I've taken so far. It runs pretty well!

Ultra High settings, no AA, DX10, vsync off, 1280x800 resolution

http://www.birdnest.org/hoodj3/Field.jpg

Pretty much the first actual area of the game I got to in the first 10 minutes I played. I drove there in a car which was really cool.

http://www.birdnest.org/hoodj3/Knifed.jpg

I snuck up behind this dude and hit him with my machete and he fell to the ground but was still alive and flipping out. He went to grab his pistol from his holster because he dropped his shotgun when he hit the ground so I stood above him for a little bit laughing at the game then when he was about to shoot me I crouched down and jabbed the machete into his chest.

I changed the graphics settings up a bit because my FPS was really high on these next shots.

Ultra High settings, 2xAA, DX10, vsync off, 1440x900 resolution

http://www.birdnest.org/hoodj3/village.jpg

This is the second village I made it to.

http://www.birdnest.org/hoodj3/fire.jpg

I decided that it would be in my best interests to set it on fire. :D

The small details in the game are pretty amazing. I took a screen shot of the flamethrower idling to show off how the wind actually moves it around but I couldn't see it very well in the shot. The way the wind moves trees and grass is just ridiculous. Not to mention the character animations and the way people react to being shot! I love it!

I decided that since I was running the game at my monitor's native resolution, I really didn't need the AA so I've turned it off now. This next shot is where I'm at in the game now. I made it to a bar and I got my 2nd buddy, who's a chick. So I tried to grab her boob but talked to her instead, darn.

http://www.birdnest.org/hoodj3/buddy.jpg

Also, I'm not putting these in IMG tags because they're huge pictures and I don't want to funk up the tables.

Playing death match on 360, and UGH.  Long load times, having to download custom maps sucks, and where the fuck is the aiming reticule?

EDIT: It's off by default, *phew*.

Visually it is so-so.  I like that throwing bombs actually sets the grass on fire, and it even spreads.  That is a nice touch.  But if the single player isn't anything special this is getting sold off.

what it can't possibly look better than on those pics

game looks like shit eitherway on a PC or 360
The game doesn't look bad at all, actually.  It's one of the best looking PC games on the market and is only getting slammed due to Crysis comparisons (which only occurs as they both focus on foliage heavy scenes).  In motion, FC2 is pretty fantastic.  I'm getting a solid 60 fps during gameplay using Very High settings with 4x AA (something that is impossible with Crysis on any rig).  You really have to see this in person, Borys.  It's much more impressive than screenshots would lead you to believe.

While it is open world, it doesn't remind me of a GTA type of game in the least.  If anything, it seems like a more open-ended "ultra light" Deus Ex type of game.  I suppose it's closer to a streamlined STALKER without the shitty gunplay, god awful AI, ass load of bugs and need to resort to load screens (though I prefer the scenery in STALKER).  In all honesty, it really does feel like a game that was made FOR the PC rather than a console game ported to the PC (the console versions feel like PC ports this time around).

Quote
and where the fuck is the aiming reticule
I'm uncertain if it is the same as the PC version, but there is actually an option to enable and disable the reticule.  It seems to automatically disable when you've select any difficulty above easy (forcing you to rely on iron sights).  You should still be able to turn it on, though.

Considering the way the 360 version loads, and even links to Ubisoft's website (which you need a separate account for, LOL), yeah I can see it being a PC-focused game.  It just strikes me as very bland and the game feels sluggish.  It's not like there's some shortage of FPS games to play either.  Wish I hadn't ordered this, but the other awesome games I got this week makes the burn pretty light.

After reading more about this - and considering what games I already have on my plate for this month + my dislike for FarCry 1 (i know its about big open worlds and not an ongoing story) I may just pass on this.

Why am I only feeling meh about this title?

Oh, I can see why you might feel "meh" about the game, but you really can't use the original Far Cry as an indicator of whether or not you'll enjoy this.  It's not simply that they've changed the focus of the game, Far Cry 2 has absolutely NOTHING to do with Far Cry (and that includes the development team).  The creators of Far Cry (a game I hate) went on to make the incredible Crysis (a game I, along with many others, adore).  I don't understand why they chose to stick with the Far Cry brand, to be honest, as there is absolutely NO connection in any way.

I view FarCry as kind of a Final Fantasy of sandbox shooters.

The theme the games will have in common is that Crytek like open free roam battlezone.

I don't see why you'd view it that way.  Only the original Far Cry (PC version) had any ties to Crytek and it wasn't even a sandbox shooter.  Both Crysis and Far Cry are very linear games with lots of different approaches available for any one encounter.  Far Cry 2 is really nothing like those games in that sense.

I'm kinda waiting for a demo to check this out. I know it will run like butter on my rig but I don't know if I actually want to play Far Cry 2, duh. It's getting nice reviews though.

So is it better than FC1, dark10x?
I absolutely hated Far Cry 1, so yeah, I much prefer the second game (which, again, has no relation).  At this point I think Crysis is a better experience than Far Cry 2, however, but they are also pretty different from one another.

Alright I'll give it a shot next year when catching up on the fall titles at half price.  I did like Far Cry 1 when it was an open-world stealth action game.  Then the mutants showed up and the fun went out the window.  :-\

I really want to play Crysis but I have to wait until console port or another 2-4 years until I upgrade my PC.  I have a 7600GT from when I built this computer 2 years ago and there's no way that's going to play Crysis on decent settings at a decent framerate.

You can easily play Crysis on fairly cheap parts.  I just threw together a PC for my sister for $500 with an 8800GT that can play Crysis at framerates higher than 30 fps on the High settings.  She's loving it and it runs smooth as butter.  If you already have a decent PC base, you could pick up an 8800GT for around $120 and have a great time.  It will run smoother than Far Cry 2 does on consoles, that's for sure (unless you delve into DX10/Very High territory).

Once you get a decent gun, this game is pretty ballin. Recoil on the starter guns is unbearable, but if you get a decent amount of diamonds and do a few weapon dealer missions you can buy some pretty awesome stuff. I have a silenced MP5 that barely moves with each shot and takes down guys easy. Plus I get to be all sneaky like. This games really wants you to hate it at first. Worst first impression I've ever seen by a game, but it's worth it to push through.

You all need to stop getting your video game impressions from NeoGAF. Lately the place has been a cesspool of group think and way-too-high snobby expectations of video games.

Comparing the thread about Far Cry 2 on NeoGAF to SomethingAwful's is quite an eye-opener.

It looks MUCH better than Mercs 2.

I haven't played Mercs 2 for longer than 2 hours because it was a pretty shitty game IMO.

NeoGAF is a joke since Uncharted bombed. That's when things got rotten - when everyone acknowledged what a big failure PS3 is. Pro-Sony mods lost all their objectivity then.

Can you link the SA Far Cry 2 thread?

Here it is

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2912924

Goons actually talk about the game and where diamonds are instead of bitching about the graphics not being as good as Crysis or being better on x than on y.

PS3 fanbots unfairly (to Naughty Dog, even) holding Uncharted up as some kind of revolutionary masterpiece and being pissed when it "bombed" > Polish people ripping on games they have never played simply because they desperately want to fit into some camp now that the PC house has come crumbling down.

This sounds like a good core game is there, but typical UBI bugginess applies.

I'll wait for UBI to fix the game via patches over the next couple months, and then grab it on steam when it is part of a weekend sale.

I suppose it depends on which genres you enjoy.  Most of the PC games I've purchased this year were console ports.  I believe the only original PC title I picked up in 2008 was Crysis Warhead.  :(  Any suggestions?  I'm not a huge strategy fan these days, though I can appreciate a good one every now and then.  I was interested in STALKER Clear Sky, but it focused on all of the elements I hated about the original game.  I can't think of anything else.
