Figured this would be a good idea since there are many young and first time voters here.

This site links to the sec of state site of all 50 states
http://www.pewcenteronthestates.org/template_page.aspx?id=44742

You can find your state's site then look around and find ballot samples. Check it out and read up on the various proposals/candidates/etc. For example: say you live in California and on election day a hot babe asks you if you're voting no on Proposition 8; do you even know what Proposition 8 is? If you look it up now you won't look like a fool in November, and you might get laid :bow

Ok, since I'm in Michigan I'll just post info on the two proposals we'll be voting on

Proposal 1
Quote
A LEGISLATIVE INITIATIVE TO PERMIT THE USE AND CULTIVATION OF MARIJUANA FOR SPECIFIED MEDICAL CONDITIONS

The proposed law would:
·      Permit physician approved use of marijuana by registered patients with debilitating medical conditions including cancer, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, hepatitis C, MS and other conditions as may be approved by the Department of Community Health.
· Permit registered individuals to grow limited amounts of marijuana for qualifying patients in an enclosed, locked facility.
· Require Department of Community Health to establish an identification card system for patients qualified to use marijuana and individuals qualified to grow marijuana.
· Permit registered and unregistered patients and primary caregivers to assert medical reasons for using marijuana as a defense to any prosecution involving marijuana.

Should this proposal be adopted?

Proposal 2
Quote
A PROPOSAL TO AMEND THE STATE CONSTITUTION TO ADDRESS HUMAN EMBRYO AND HUMAN EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH IN MICHIGAN

The proposed constitutional amendment would:
·      Expand use of human embryos for any research permitted under federal law subject to the following limits: the embryos --
-- are created for fertility treatment purposes;
-- are not suitable for implantation or are in excess of clinical needs;
-- would be discarded unless used for research;
-- were donated by the person seeking fertility treatment.
·      Provide that stem cells cannot be taken from human embryos more than 14 days after cell division begins.
· Prohibit any person from selling or purchasing human embryos for stem cell research.
· Prohibit state and local laws that prevent, restrict or discourage stem cell research, future therapies and cures.

Should this proposal be adopted?

I'm voting YES on both  :pimp

I seriously want to egg Yes on 8 protesters next weekend. I know what intersection they'll be at on Saturday afternoon.

Alternatively I could get some really offensive signs and coprotest with them.

You're right - we can't vote on prop 8. That hasn't stopped the "It's Not About Tolerance" prop 8 people from canvasing on our campus. They mainly focus on the stem cell proposition in Michigan, but they pass out "yes on prop 8" pamphlets right outside the library and student center building.

I haven't looked up their claims yet. I just don't buy the argument that if Proposition 8 fails churches won't be able to preach about the sins of homosexuality without losing their tax exemption

maybe that's because it's a TOTAL FUCKING LIE

Prop 8 is "gays can't marry"

Yes on 8 = I hate gays
No on 8 = I'm not dumb

Whats prop 8

Gay marriage ban in California.

I'd vote no on 8 if I could.

Yep, struck me as unconstitutional. Churches are allowed to do whatever they want with respect to gay marriage; if they don't want to marry same sex couples they don't have to, and will face no punishment from the state.

But omg kids learning about gay marriage in kindergarden  :omg

Preachers/priests/rabbis already have the right to choose whose marriages they preside over.  It's not like priests are required to marry a couple of divorcees, or an Orthodox Jew has to preside over the wedding of a couple festival Jews.

The silver lining to the lies supporting the Prop 8 campaign is that the anti-gay movement has realized open, hostile homophobia is becoming publicly verboten.  We can look forward to several decades of code words on these issues.
