DSi looks pretty good!
« on: October 23, 2008, 05:36:17 PM »
http://www.wipido.com/video/TCJ8jasMfUH6

01:10 - taking photos and playing with them. Realtime smudging, paint-bucket style colour alteration (no idea how this works, but it looks cool!), morphing between two photos, facial / smile tracking, Wii Photo editor style stamps and doodling, kaladescope effects, built in borders, zooming, slideshow mode.

02:20 - AAC music player, realtime frequency / pitch / speed shifting,

03:18 - Voice recording / dictaphone type functionality, with effects applied afterwards

03:30 - DSware shop, web browser (much faster and smoother than the old boxed Opera Browser), Nintendo points

03:35 - Flickbook animations. I can imagine what kind of horrors are going to be created with this  :hyper

03:57 - DS cards can now be removed / inserted while the power is on and automatically detected in the menu, like the Wii Disc channel.

04:05 - Pictochat in colour.

Ends showing the empty channel slots.

Its a shame if the camera really is only 0.3MP and its a shame it doesn't have a flash. But daylight 640x480 pictures would certainly be fine on those screens and when transfered to the Wii (which is 480p at best)... and you can see from that demo, that its capable of processing camera data nice and fast. The extra RAM must be a big help, hopefully DSware games take advantage the way the built in games do!

These are pretty cool updates that I wouldn't mind having on my DS, but I'm not sure it's really worth the money to upgrade from the Lite. Technically it's a much bigger jump in functionality than the Phat-Lite transition (which was purely cosmetic), but it's mostly fluff aimed at the mobile phone culture in Japan.

Still, the matte black one is pretty awesome. I wouldn't mind having it, if only for the bigger screens and shop.

No, Herb & Jamaal would say:

"Look at my new portable telephone! It's the new expensive model that people have been discussing. It can connect to content on online networks, capture photographs, display both still and motion pictures, and work as a daily planning tool to personally assist me in daily tasks."

"But can you talk to other people using a phone network?"

"I have not yet discovered that feature, as the picture-based interface of the telephone is too complicated."

I'll probably buy it because I collect these things (handheld gaming devices), but the features they implemented don't really make up for the ugly style it has now and (seemingly) not fixing the poor d-pad.  The problem with all these features is that none of them serve any practical purpose.  Well, I guess the web browser could be good, but for me it doesn't serve much of a purpose considering I have an iPod Touch.

And Nintendo really does have amazing supporters

Dont get me wrong, I fucking ADORE my DS Lite, and would defend its library.

But this kind of upgrade puts into play the same mentality that has driven the Wii library into the ground. Remember the obnoxious mandate to implement stylus bullshit. That turned out great. Now imagine all the bullshit game mechanics based around shitty fucking camera shit and aww goddamnit I hate Nintendo sometimes.

0.3 MP for the camera facing you. The one on the outer shell is 3.0 MP, I believe.

And I don't see Crushed defending the camera anywhere in this thread. Get some better glasses, Borys.

0.3MP would yield a picture this size

Big thumbnail! :p Obviously you couldn't take a picture of that quality on the DSi, but its probably enough for kids to play about with, and it'd look fine at 100% zoom on the Wii. Although of course, I'm not saying that going 0.3MP isn't exceedingly cheap and nasty of Nintendo. Plenty of sub £150 phones have 3-5MP cameras these days, the least they could have done was put 0.3MP on the inside, and 3MP minimum on the outside. Thats what a lot of phone manufacturers are doing now. A low quality camera on the face, for video calls, and the other being a proper camera. The pixel count isn't gonna be the real killer on image quality anyway, its going to be the lack of a xenon flash in low light. As soon as the twilight hours approach, pictures are gonna get noisy as fuck, as well as only being 640x480.

I wouldn't buy one of these new, but I'm willing to trade my current DS in towards it.

That would make sense. Someone needs to translate that Iwata Asks thing and see what he really says.

Anyone who plans to use the camera to take any serious pictures is an idiot.  It's just a nice diversion, maybe some games will use it like the old Gameboy Camera, but I highly, highly doubt any games will require it (unless it's some DSware minigame).

I get the feeling that this is targeted towards girls that like purikura here, and if it has that type of customization built in, it'll probably be really popular.  I doubt the American market cares as much, but who knows, who cares.

They can't do this since regular DS/Lites don't have the camera.  They won't split their usebase like that, so I doubt anything major will ever come out.  It's like the old stupid Gameboy Camera.

There already is a DS camera you can get now, BTW.  It comes with Face Training.  Really all this DSi is to me is the Face Training camera, Opera Browser, and Play-Yan all in one.  Yay.  I want one anyway though.

It would not surprise me if they release something for the DS/Lite to access DS Ware, too.

DSi ware stuff is actually cool.  It already butt fucks the garbage on Wiiware.

Art Style is also the name of the bit generation remakes for Wiiware, right? hopefully that expands on the DS.  Made in Ore actually seems cool.

Is there any confirmation yet that flash cards work?

Hopefully by the time it does get released in America they will have CFW running on it or something.

Made in Ore still sounds cool, but damn the trickery to make DSi ware seem interesting by associating it is just.  Art style is still awesome and I can only hope more bit generation style games come to it.

Impressions if you care-

Picked up a black DSi this afternoon and have only had a small amount of time to mess around with it.  (Can't comment on lines and such because I was lucky enough to get a reserve ticket from an awesome guy (:bow Dcharlie :bow2), and just walked into the store, paid, and left.)

Right off the bat, the most noticeable differences for me are:

-The sound quality has been improved.  The speakers are much LOUDER at the maximum setting.  I ran both the same game in both DSi and the DS Lite at the same time, and I could barely hear the Lite's compared to the DSi's superior speakers.

-The screens are only a little better.  It's pretty much just because they are a bit bigger on the DSi, and it helps, but it's not a huge difference to me.

-The DSi feels better in your hands than the DS Lite does.  It is more comfortable to hold, and the raised L and R buttons feel MUCH better.  The d-pad and face buttons don't stick out as much as the Lite's, and feel a bit "clickier" in comparison.  I need to try out something like Bleach DS 2nd and see how the d-pad really fares.

-Volume BUTTONS!  This is much better than the slider.

-The power button is now at the bottom left of the DSi face.  You tap it once to go back to the new DSi menu screen (It has a Wii-like interface complete with background sounds), hold it to turn the unit off.

-The matte finish feels very different from the glossy, Apple-like DS Lite.  I am not sure if I like this better or not over the Lite.

-The unit is a bit thinner than the DS Lite, but also a bit longer.

-The AC adapter is slightly larger than the previous model DS's, and will not work with previous models.  Nor will the older DS ACs work with the DSi.

-For those who make use of certain cards for homebrew and such, they do not work.

Also a small warning to potential importers: THERE ARE NO ENGLISH MENU OPTION SETTINGS.  This is just like the Wii and further proof that the DS Stores are going to be separated by region.

Haven't messed with the other stuff like the camera yet; I'm sure it will get some laughs but it's just a novelty to me.

EDIT- Messed with the camera.  Yeah, you can do some goofy stuff with it.  My wife liked it for a few minutes.  Yay.  I am sure if I were a teenage Japanese girl I'd love it, but whatever.  It's a worse camera than the one on my iPhone, lolz.  Can't comment on the internet browser since you have to download it first and I need to get wi-fi working on it.  Plus I don't really care.

Overall it doesn't feel like a huge leap to me like the DS Lite was over the DS; part of me wonders if they really released this to try and combat the piracy issue.  But I am a sucker for new tech so I had to get one.  I wouldn't recommend importing it unless you also have a Japanese Wii and buy stuff from the J-store.

Amen.  WEP makes me feel like my router is so exposed.  I never played my DSL at home because I didn't want to downgrade my protection being in an apt complex and all.  WPA 32 support (and the SD slot) would be enough to make me upgrade.

Mario Kart DS was fun until it was plagued by snakers and cheaters.  Metroid Hunters was also somewhat fun for being a quake clone.  And despite the lag, the Bleach fighting games were fun online.

I'm glad the buttons/d-pad are better.  I'll probably go back and play Contra 4 without having to battle with the shitty diagonals on the d-pad.

Might be interested in the dsware store if they start a VC like service for GB/GBC/GBA games.

are there any actual online games for the ds that don't suck?

Tetris and Mario Kart (which does actually suck online but it's mario kart)

But actually, it's the principality of the thing, smokey.  It's an online device, there should be support for non-compromised security.

There's principalities involved  :-*

I will probably get a DSi. I still play with my crusty 3 year old DS phat, never upgraded to a lite. And better speakers + mp3 player with pitch shift :bow awesome. I can chop and screw Mystikal songs on the go!

There are no dual touch screens.  Only the bottom one is touch and both are .25 inches bigger (which is apparently huge if you wear Nintendo PJs).  There are two cameras if that's what you meant.
