Were the RE games ever scary?
« on: October 29, 2008, 01:17:33 AM »
Sure, the first time the dogs jump out in RE1 gave me a start, but I don't remember ever being scared after that.   PS1 graphics aren't scary, Code Veronica was too cheesy, and RE4 is an action game with a creepy atmosphere.   Not to say it's a negative on the series, I still like it a lot.

RE1 was back in the day.

REmake was because of the added subplot of the horrible demon monster thing you read about and hear the screams of throughout the game and then when you finally have to go out in the night graveyard to find it you are scared as shit because of all the build up.

What's truly scary in games is a creepy mood.  RE outside of REmake has never really been about mood and instead just 1 second jump scares.

i still have to play REmake.  Are you talking about Lisa Trevor (the thing in UC?)  Probably the creepiest design of an enemy outside of SH:Homecoming.

Yeah.  REmake was really well done.  It's the game I bought my GC for :O

Nothing in RE is scarier than that mirror changing moment in SH3.

RE2 was the first RE game I played, and I kind of remember being startled every now and then and having kind of a creepy feeling of not knowing what's going to happen next. It was more like I'd have to go around a corner and knowing that something was probably going to jump out at me so I would psych myself out. Then I'd go around the corner and something would jump out at me and I'd be like "that was it?"  :lol

This was back when I still lived with my parents and my game systems were down in the basement, which was kind of creepy anyways.

I came in here to post this.   :lol  That was the only moment in a game that startled me.  The rest?  Not scary at all.  Nor was Silent Hill (it's just creepy).

RE2 had too much ammo. Less ammo, more scares.

RE1 had pretty a pretty tight atmosphere going on.  2 and 3 (as I remember) were much more plentiful with the ammo and healing items.  RE1 creeped me the fuck out.  RE2 did for the first portion of the game, until I realized that ammo wouldn't be an issue.

By the time Code Veronica came around, there was really no fear left.

Not really, but they have always had an awesome atmosphere.  RE4 still has a great atmosphere, even if it was a bit different.

One of the few games I would class as 'scary' is perhaps Fatal Frame.  And half of that is probably because you know when a ghost appears you're going to get your controls ass-backwards and die.

No.

The dogs jumping through the window were scary.

Nothing in RE has been scary since.

There was that boss fight in Code Veronica, the foggy battle against the blind/bound twins father.  I was sweating it big time over that.

and I'll second REmake's scariness.  The Lisa Trevor buildup and execution was really well done, and her/its only line of dialog freaked me out(OMG that THING is Lisa).  That and the crimson heads, and the WTFarethose insects near the end.  Gosh dang, they dun a good job on that game.  If Capcom wanted to, they probably could whip up a current-gen horror game that would be just shattering, but then I remember RE0 and Dino Crisis 3 and think its better they not try.

well, i really do struggle with horror movies and games that freak me out.

Condemned 1 (ONE not two) did make me feel a little uneasy
Dead Space makes me feel VERY uneasy though - only Rei/Project Zero/Fatal frame has made me feel unconfortable before.

lol - this is what happens when your parents let you watch 70-80s slash horror stuff when you are a kid. :/

now i'm only freaked out by stuff like Session 9.
Jesus.... session fucking 9. Silent hill style WTFness.

Session 9 was scary for days afterward, as the whole storyline kind of clicked into place after percolating for a bit. The whole thing with the burned arm? The run down the hallway? Freak out bigtime.

I just bought Condemned and haven't popped it in yet. Now I'm looking forward to it.

Biohazard was scary when the dogs popped out, and maybe the first time you have to walk past the dead guy on the floor, and he grabs you. The first time my sister played that game, I waited for her to freak out. She was tense, but as she approached the prone figure, she put two in its skull without hesitating, and kept moving. I said, "When the zombie apocalypse comes, sis, you get to hold the guns."

I guess the whole point is that I'm wondering why there's a vocal group that seem to already hate RE5.  People usually say "it's not survival horror" but as we know, even RE2 had shit tons of ammo and is pretty easy, except when the controls fuck you up.  The games have always been action with fetch quests and anyone with half a brain will have conserved enough inventory to make them practically invincible for the end boss.

Every trailer and pic of RE5 points to the game being extremely tense.  And that's what RE4 did best--it just throws awesome tense situation after awesome tense situation at you for about 15 hours straight. I'm getting a serpent and the rainbow vibe from it.

I'm having this problem with Dead Space - I've played so many survival horror games that I've gotten really proactive about sweeping the area, checking the ceiling, being wary of doors and elevators, and capping any suspciously-placed corpses from outside grabbing distance.

RE5 just plain doesn't look like a very spectacular. Or, specifically, it doesn't look at all different or improved from RE4. Same enemies, same combat, same ability to run straight through the enemies in dire times, and even the same setting. The E3 demonstrations really took the wind out of it for me. I'm sure that since it "builds" on a good game it too will be a good game, but I had expected more. Nothing to do with scares or lack thereof, as I consider RE4 the only good game in the series.

unfortunately for you, the rest of the series is probably going to be like RE4, just like the games before are all like RE1.  I agree it doesn't look wholly different, but there seem to be some nice adjustments.  Things seem more tense and claustrophobic.

RE1 back in the day had a great mood. I remember playing pretty late at night with my brother watching, and didn't know where to go for a bit. I'd killed all the zombies, and was walking around pretty aimlessly, looking for something that I'd missed. We were getting bored and I walked through a door to one of the hallways I'd been through like ten times, when the fuckers all respawned and grabbed me after the lol loading door screen. Made us both jump.

I didn't really find the later RE's very unsettling, but REmake was really fantastic. As mentioned by a few people in this thread, the moaning boss with all of the buildup was just great. Probably my fave GC game.
