Have you read The Mysteious Flame of Queen Loana Eric?  There is a whole chapter devoted to older european comics.  Really good stuff.

it's on my book shelf but i'm tearing through some older moorcock i haven't read yet.

if you go to The Modern Word, there are extensive annotations for that book.

also, in the move, i found my copy of Nazi Literature by Bolano which I need to send to you

have you read The Amulet by him?  it's the story of a minor character from The Savage Detective.  I hadn't read that yet so I fear that most of The Amulet was lost on me.

Have you read The Killing Joke Yet? Best Joker story to date written by Alan Moore with FUCKING INCREDIBLE art.

and don't read tdkr. It fucking sucks. In fact, anything by Miller FUCKING SUCKS. Do read Sandman though. It's the only good thing Gaiman has ever done.

The Killing Joke is good but even Moore admits that it's a little so-so.  Good art but applying a backstory to the Joker is just lame.

And TDKR isn't horrible you poop.  It's probably the best Batman comic next to Long Halloween, in my eyes.

Uhhh, The Goon by Eric Powell is fun. And goofy.

I'll throw in Scott Pilgrim, though there's already been threads about that.

I like Paul Pope's art, but his writing is  ???

Long Halloween bored me to tears. Stylish, but empty. Name an outstanding Jeph Loeb comic and I'll gladly try it. So far, everything I've read by him has been crushingly average fanservice.

Heh I was just about to ask about Year One.

Growing up I was never into DC in general, although I liked Batman. My dad had a shit ton of Marvel comics from his youth (mainly Avengers and Thor) and eventually I got obsessed with X-Men; Wolverine has been my favorite superhero since I was like 6

Killing Joke is one of my least favorite Moore comics (that people actually like anyway).  He's not crazy about it either.  It's got great art though and it's probably worth the read for the price.

Year One is good.  TDKR is awesome :gun

Since I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be stood up on Halloween by my friendgirl, I'm just going to spend the night at Barnes and Noble before going to see a movie I guess; I hate Halloween anyway. That way I'll just read the Killing Joke in the store cafe (48 pages isn't a lot) and preview as much stuff as I can before buying some stuff

And I'll probably pick up the first Malazan book, I need another copy of Black Boy (mine has literally fallen apart), maybe Tigana (someone here recommended it, sounds awesome)

It's my favorite book. I borrowed my cousin's copy from her, when she was in college a decade ago and never returned it; even at that young of an age (11) the book spoke to me. Reading it as an adult was even more insightful and powerful for me in part because I began to experience some of the situations discussed in the book.

Yea I know a lot of people like that. The reason it's easy for me is because while I've read many books that have resonated with me, none have touched me more or influenced my perspective more than Black Boy. Invisible Man and Soul on Ice are probably more acclaimed but imo Black Boy captures the best aspects of both novels.

I dunno, I take Crying of Lot 49 over Gravity's Rainbow because I'm a big fan of being concise, and Gravity's Rainbow is the opposite of concise.  I also find 49 more interesting because conspiracies are fun.

I'm watching the documentary The Mindscape of Alan Moore.  I've been a fan of his for years, but I don't think I'd seen video of him before.  I kinda want him to rape me.  And he seems like he's drunk all the time, but I think that's just the way people from the UK are.

Barnes and Noble was a step ahead of me last night. Killing Joke was wrapped in plastic so I wound up checking out Queen and Country instead. Pretty good although I was a bit bummed the art was more cartoony than the cover art. Reminded more of 24 than Bourne

I thought Sandman and have read 4 issues so far. The first one is pretty good, especially the ending where he breaks out of the magical prison and punishes that dude with eternal waking; fuck that would suck

Second issue was ok, third was good but the fourth issue where he enters hell was great.

Like Sandman, Queen and Country changes artists pretty much every arc. Generally speaking the art is stylized, yeah, but after a book or two you'll be so engrossed in the characters it won't matter.
