Sneaking on the boat was probably the most MGS like gameplay in the entire game. The boss battle after was great. I really liked what the did with Snake crawling his way through the microwave hallway as you watched hell breaking loose everywhere else. The Mr. and Mrs. Smith cutscene was absurd, but I liked it.

And yes, I even liked the final fist fight. It was hard but I had no issues with the controls.

At one time, I considered spending half of all the money I made for 3 MONTHS on a PS3, now only Yakuza, Wipeout and it's bluray functionality are all that I care about.

Big Boss showing up was the most distinguished mentally-challenged thing ever. It took an already terrible ending and made it even more terrible. And the Raiden stuff was almost as bad as the wedding scene, too

The biggest problem with MGS4 was touched upon above, it's no fun to replay because you can't just blow through it. There's lots of slow junk breaking up the sections of real gameplay and it turns you off to the point that replaying it just isn't fun.

MGS1-3 are fun because you can just speed through the games and enjoy the gameplay. MGS4 never lets you forget it's a movie.

I just don't find it fun on replay anymore. The end parts where the AI goes nuts and you run around naked with a sword is still awesome, but most of the game up until then is pretty dull. The villains suck and Big Shell just isn't that interesting of location.

On replaying them all before MGS4 came out I enjoyed Portable Ops more because PO has Big Boss and Big Boss is the most likeable character ever. The writing in that game was almost as much fun as MGS3. The gameplay was also pretty decent on 2nd play since you don't have to recruit people and can blaze through it.

Well, you still have to do ch.3 first part which is slow and on the game's time not yours. Then you have to do the 2nd half of ch.3 which again you have to play it on the game's time until the game says it's time to move on. Both these parts were fun the first time but not so much on replays. Ch.4 just isn't that fun to replay because it's dull. Ch.5's final fight is a chore.

The way MGS4 is designed, it doesn't even make sense to do a no-kills run, which is why I hate how the game rewards the player for less violence in every level.

Well in MGS4 they give you GUNS GALORE. And multiple ways to modify and improve your guns. And a lot of money to buy gun and ammo whenever you want.
So it gives you the incentive to go guns blazing.
But you can also ignore it and just use the tranq gun.

Do you also hate the Sorrow 'battle'? or how about the latter? having slow moody sections aren't new to the series, it just seems a lot more jarring because the first two acts have the most action seen in a Metal Gear game.

The 4th and 5th acts a bit dull to replay, especially the 5th because it doesn't have that MGS1 nostalgia there, but I did like them the first time I played. First two acts are amazing and I've replayed them a couple times.

I can only hope that there is a MGSPO type game made for the PS3/360/PC/anythingbutthewii that has the MGS4 gameplay and is purely combat situations and all that. Portable Ops was a good game outside of the controls issues.

I can see how the self-indulgence and unnecessary fan service of MGS4 drive people nuts.

I never really wrote about my experiences with MGS4.

I hated it so much that I couldn't play games for like 2 months.

It made me question my career and what I had done with my life such that I ended up playing MGS4 and trying to enjoy it.

It was not just bad, it was existentially bad. And when you play the abyss, the abyss plays you also.
