Nah, they've made the issue about education and tax empt status for churches by LYING to people.

Don't forget free speech.  According to the guys waving signs down the street a vote for Yes on Prop 8 is a vote for free speech in America.  ::)

I wouldn't say they are a lost cause.  The yes on 8 campaign did an amazing job reframing the issue around education and tax status like i said, and it scared a lot of well meaning people.

Bebpo points out just how disjointed the campaign is, though - I've seen people argue that Yes on 8 is necessary to support free speech, and I've also seen "Keep Government Out of Our Lives - Vote Yes on 8" which is pretty hilarious.

On an issue like this, youre either for it or you arent. Commercials can't objectively lay out a pro-con on either side of the fence. It comes down to defending a belief, which most people are decided on already. So Utah spams ads, it isn't going to change minds, if anything it will let people who disagree know that they need to get out and vote.

Its not like a tax plan.

I'd like to believe this, but it only works like that if everyone has a grounded and individually weighted belief system. It's kind of like the idealistic 'engaged and informed' populace. I wish I had reason to believe that everyone assumed as much personal responsibility.

I'd say a lot of people in general are able to be swayed in one way or another on really core issues by messages that shouldn't have much effect at all. All the various outlets ~ a night at church, watching biased TV (one way or the other), listening to biased radio, reading up on the internet/blogs...all the way down to chain emails and signs on the road.

The truth is somewhere in the middle, and seeing a stupid commercial probably won't have much effect, but think about the state of modern McCarthyism three months ago.  Look at it now.

These people are stupid, and can't be helped, but we have to put forth an effort to sway them because at the end of the day we all just get one vote. A stupid vote with you beats a stupid vote against you.

I interpreted that scene as Heath's paranoia getting the best of him, making a total accident seem like a tragic homo bashing.

Anyone have some samples of the commercials being run by the Yes on 8 crowd?

Apparently, Yes on 8 sent flyers to African-American voters saying Barack Obama was pro-8 (he's not, and he and Biden have spoken out about it at length)

They've also tried to blackmail businesses who donated to No on 8, saying "donate an equal amount to Yes on 8 or we will PUBLISH YOUR NAME!" To which most businesses said, fine, publish away motherfuckers.

Bigotted fearmonger shitfucks.

I don't think that's true.

Yeah, it's not a technocratic issue.  But people's moral/ethical opinions can be swayed.

What I think is going on is that the Prop 8 people are flooding the discussion with arguments that prey on people's previous biases or give some kind of rhetorical cover for doing what they want to do anyway.

The anti-gay movement is completely weird these days.  Unfiltered, explicit homophobia is off the table so they have to make a lot of roundabout arguments in support of policies that have no other purpose other than oppressing and stigmatizing the feygeles.

So they act like gay marriage threatens churches, kids, and free speech because

1) dunces who don't trust homosexuals are apt to believe it

and

2) it gives homophobes an out.  They can say "I'm voting for 8.  I don't hate gay people or anything like that, but I'm really worried about..."

Sort of the same process where people adopted pretzel logic to oppose the Fair Housing Act and the Equal Rights Amendment (it will mean a ban on single-sex public restrooms!).  Most bigots are aware of how ugly their distilled arguments would actually sound to the rest of society.

Is there a website where I can find the polling numbers for all of these ballot initiatives? I'm quite interested in what happens with Prop 5, but I can't find numbers anywhere.
