Anyone tried Vampire:The Masquerade on Steam
« on: November 01, 2008, 02:37:56 PM »
I bought the game at launch but it had lots of performance issues, so I never tried it.

How's the Steam version?  I seem to recall that a couple of patches have made the game run better.

Since it's only $10 this week at Steam, I might just get it there so that I don't have to bother with finding discs, installing patches, etc.

I played the first game a lot, it was pretty janky, and melee was insanely OP iirc. Still, it was a fun diversion back then.

The 1st game?  You mean the 3rd person RPG?

I liked that one a lot back then because it had fantastic atmosphere and stunning graphics for its time.

There aren't any Steam-related issues, the fan patches all work with it the same as the disc version. For $10, everyone should play it. It's a great game in spite of it's issues.

one of the first games I played when I got my Gateway PC in 2000.  It came with it.  It was incredible.

Yup.  It's very playable right now.  The only really nagging bug that remains are some weird sound issues (incidental dialogue 20 feet away will sometimes sound like it is right next to you, making you freak out and spin around and look for the source).  It also has the odd crash to desktop, but heck, what PC game doesn't?

Highly recommended.  A shame the game sort of goes tits up towards the end.  I think they were rushed.  That and the shitty QA team are the Troika magic they hired up at Obsidian, I guess.

I'm going to install it again right now.

The first half of the game is really great, it focuses heavily on RPG-ing and dialogue, but the second degenerates into one battle after another with hordes of guys. Which might not have been that bad, but the combat sucks and it punishes you for not playing a combat-heavy character.

Otherwise, it's a great game and well worth $10. Just make sure to get the latest fan patch.

I remember playing it and thinking it had an awesome story and unbelievable graphics.

Bloodlines wasn't as awesome and i had to wait 2 years to go back, apply the patches and finish it.

:lol

I was amazed at the graphics.  I wasn't too much into console gaming at the time and I was popping my PC gaming cherry with the new PC.  I downloaded so much shit from Kazaa and bought soooo many cheap games.  That was probably one of the best times for me and gaming.

I never played Bloodlines though :(
