Any World War 1 (The big war) history buffs out there?
« on: November 02, 2008, 11:31:50 AM »
I have recently been playing this WW1 game and watched Lawrence of arabia again and I have grown interested in learning about the great war. It's so strange to think about all the secret alliances that basically started the domino effect on the 20th century. If WW1 never happened  WW2 would have either not happened or no where near the same. We still have have a Russian Tzar and who knows how the Ottoman empire would have dealt with the middle east.

Anyway, can anyone recommend any good documentaries or books(besides All Quiet...) about the war?

There was a really amazing 10 hour Canadian doc that ran here last year.

I'll see if I can find info for it.

The canucks provided some good support to the allies if I remember correctly.

WW1 was absolutely not kick ass. Some of the most grotesque weaponry ever used, tactics outpaced by technology, and the reason behind it all so very stupid.

Thats what I mean tho, tactics outpaced by technology- they didnt have the proper tactics to use the new stuff without massive loss of life on either side. Modern Warfare tactics didnt really take off until WWII.

Angry face, it was the other way around. Technology such as the machine gun and barb wire out paced tactics. That's why the trench warfare emerged. Trenches are a defensive tactic early on, it was unclear how to effectively advance.

WW1 has over 10% of soldiers die.
WW2 had less than 5%.

The reason WW2 wasnt as bad as WW1 was the increased mobility of infantry. Tanks and other mechanized units also added to this.
