What's so great about 3D Zelda?
« on: November 02, 2008, 10:12:07 PM »
I'm throwing down the gauntlet EB.

The 2D zelda's have been fun.  The original was one of the first memorable classics after SMB1.  LTTP and Minish Cap kept my interest.

3D Zelda, on the other hand, is really mediocre.  discuss.

i thought OoT was awesome back when it came out. course i was a stoner then and i thought almost everything was awesome. i hated WW and didn't care for TP very much.

so maybe i agree?

Majora's Mask is amazing to this day.  The rest are kind of bland, and Twilight Princess was boredom defined.

I disagree, but I can't really explain why in words.  My favorite games Zelda games, both 3D and 2D ones.

Zelda's a great series, but it is definitely getting long in tooth.  I thought that Ocarina of Time was going to be pure crap based on previews at the time, but it ended up surprising me in a positive way.  I would say my favorite Zelda is also one of the most overlooked, Link's Awakening.  I loved the charm, the side scrolling sections, the tight and cleverly designed overworld, and the castaway theme.

I never played the Oracle games or Mimish cap unfortunately.  Here's hoping thye get rereleased somehow, somewhere.

I thought TP took some good steps, with some unique items and puzzles, as well as some cool character designs.  but then it was like a million hours long, with a completely unrewarding overworld that only offered rupees you didn't want.

............it needs a lush, detailed HD game with more than just "go to dungeon A, solve puzzle with Item A, defeat boss with item."

The Wind Waker is the only Zelda game that I can still go back and play to this day even if it falls completely apart towards the end and the sailing is monotonous as all hell.  I'm pretty indiferent to the Zelda series as a whole though.

If you want to shit on a 3d nintendo game, please shit on metroid prime and mario 64.

Metroid Prime 1 is great!  Mario 64 = crap.  Another game that just got totally bland in the transition to 3D (though Galaxy is pretty awesome, but not on the level of SMW, SMB3, or YI.)

No, I'm pretty sure I played it the day it came out, and I was crushed it was so mediocre after the snes marios.  I care for maybe 2 3d platformers, and none of them are Mario 64.

Is it Banjo? it shouldn't be Banjo.

No lepering, just real talk.  Nintendo needs a reality check every once in a while.  as someone who actually grew up on these games, it's my duty to point out that 2D nintendo is the golden era and that 3D nintendo comes off as archaic.

Being in the third dimension makes some 3d Zelda puzzles and dungeons actually have depth, compared to the mostly - aside from Link's Awakening mostly - plain puzzles and dungeons in 2d Zelda.

MGS and FFVII-IX were better than 97% of the N64's library. The N64 had its moments though; Perfect Dark, Killer Instinct, Super Smash Bros., Majora's Mask etc.

Landstalker is great, if you can get used to the isometric perspective and lack of shadows. Game is also extremely challenging too, I'll second a recommendation. Alundra is pure sex as well, the only problem with it is the music wasn't good :(

I think the worst part about all this is that the GBC/GBA could be depended on for 2D iterations, but the DS goes for even uglier and more bland versions of the 3D games.  NSMB, MP:H, and Z:PH are such abominations.
