This election kind of sucks aside from Obama winning and Liddy Dole losing.

-Prop 8 passes
-Alaska seems ok with sending Senator "Convicted Felon" Tubes back to the Senate just to see him get booted
-Michelle Bachmann, the odious Diaz-Balart brothers and all assorted other gross Congress critters got sent back
-Looks like Obama's not gonna have much in the way of coat tails- Senate races in OR and MN are too close to call but trending to the Republicans.

In the big picture, how awesome is it that you're disappointed by six seats in the Senate, twenty odd in the House, and 364 electoral votes?

I'm not sure that Obama has no coattails.  Most of the pickups seem to be in swing states where he campaigned.  Maybe he could have tipped the Oregon and Minnesota Senate races, but it was probably the right call to stay on offense in the '04 red states.

And as much as I've been pimping the demographic plate-shifting, it takes time and there's still a lot of Republicans out there who aren't going away.

She could replace Stevens with herself; there will probably be a special election but seriously, it's not like she'd lose.

Palin in the senate would be amazing.  :lol

Energy policy/job creation for me, at least in the sense that it seems like one of the more doable things given the current economic status. The possibilities are amazing, and while we won't be weened off oil anytime soon I really think the job creation potential would really help the country, especially states like Michigan

And on the foreign policy side...common sense, common sense. That's what we'll get

In general, I'm looking forward to this:

Quote from: Chris from Explananda
Politics becomes interesting again. For eight long years, the country has been run by hateful, blinkered people. During this time, and especially over the last four years, politics has only been interesting because it involves issues vital to our lives and often to the fate of humanity. What’s been largely missing is a sense that an intelligent contribution to political discourse could ever have a meaningful impact on the people who actually make decisions. For all the disagreements among Obama supporters, I think that there’s going to be a real, and extremely refreshing sense, that political debate is an area in which intelligent, well-argued, evidence-backed contributions might conceivably sway reasonable people in positions in power. A lot of very smart people all over the country are going to find that wildly exhilarating. There’s an incredible amount of pent up energy, enthusiasm and ideas out there. May it make a difference.

The adults are back in charge!

Energy and health care are the issues I'm interested in seeing addressed.

Also, hopefully we will find that all Americans will have a voice, not just corporations wealthy enough to buy a politician's ear.

I'm not expecting too much.

- Obama's tax plan will get watered down so it can pass.  Lower and middle class families will get less relief and the upper class will have their tax increases reduced.

- Due to the massive deficits, I wouldn't expect huge amounts of money to go towards technology until we're on track to have a surplus.  He might in the second term.

- No nationalized health care in either terms.  There will be talk of it but not a lot of action.

- Foreign policy won't be much different.  It isn't like either McCain or Obama can afford the wars for too much longer anyway.  To prove that he is tough, I will expect toned down forms of sabre rattling but not even close to the extent of Bush.

The only thing I really want is a concrete plan to start paying off the massive national debt.  No sense paying $300+ billion on interest.

True, True

Which is why stuff like energy could see traction early in his term. There will be bi-partisan support, Obama is willing to let the republicans drill baby drill, McCain will probably get on board to help save his image, etc.

Foreign policy is going to be very different, come on. First off we won't see any unilateral wars built on lies

You're probably right on taxes, but lower/middle class families will definitely get a cut.

Its not hard to make the tax cut to middle class Obama once, since the tax situation was the same in the Clinton Era.

Nothing he's asking for tax wise is drastic. Even at 250k its like 130 dollars more. It doesnt get large until your a millionaire and at that point 'fuck you money fuck'

I don't know about that. Obama's campaign is paradigm shifting in that it proved that you don't need to rely on the rich elite (although having supporters such as Buffet help) for cash. He tapped the Internet and reached out to the everyman and hauled in record amounts. If the republicans are smart they will copy that strategy, become more centrist, and will do less to please the rich.

No, I dont think he could get away with that, as it was the centerpiece of his campaign. Republicans also know that backing McCain policy isnt exactly popular with the people that will ever get them into office either.

I dont know why anyone in this thread is pretending the republican party, as it currently stands, has any real power anymore. There needs to be change on their end.

I like the Democratic plan: positive campaign but willing to stand up for themselves.  This should be crucial for several seats in 2010 that may now go to Democrats, achieving that supermajority that I wished happened last night.

The GOP will keep being negative for some time.

It still has some power.  It took a big hit but some left last night unscathed.  They might talk a little different now but they all got into their seats because of the rich and because of their negative campaigning.  For some of these guys, it was the only way they know how to act, politically.

Plus then you have conservative Democratic senators that might not be too trustworthy and facing a tough re-election if they were to just follow Obama.

I think it's pretty telling how out of touch the party is when McCain supporters booed the mentioning of Obama at his concession speech last night, while literally 2/3 of the U.S. and most of the world (cept Russia) rejoices over his election. Not to mention resorting to perpetuating racial ignorance and hate concerning Obama's ethnicity and his patriotism.

Obama  :lol
Quote
-- The debates unnerved both candidates. When he was preparing for the Democratic primary debates, Obama was recorded saying, "I don't consider this to be a good format for me, which makes me more cautious. I often find myself trapped by the questions and thinking to myself, 'You know, this is a stupid question, but let me ... answer it.' So when Brian Williams is asking me about what's a personal thing that you've done [that's green], and I say, you know, 'Well, I planted a bunch of trees.' And he says, 'I'm talking about personal.' What I'm thinking in my head is, 'Well, the truth is, Brian, we can't solve global warming because I f---ing changed light bulbs in my house. It's because of something collective'."
