Dental-Bore: my mouth is full of anaesthetic and fillings

...and I sure as hell am going to start brushing, flossing, and mouthwashing more often.  :-\

I picked up an electric toothbrush after I asked the hygienist whether they really worked better than normal brushes. I know my technique sucks, so electric it is.  It's actually pretty soothing to use.

Out of interest, what reasoning did he use to say electric brushes are better than regular ones?

The ones that brush in a circular pattern duplicate the kind of brushing that dentists recommend. They're about equal with regular brushes if your brushing technique is correct, but mine is rotten, especially at 7 am.

Ah, I figured that would be his answer.

Also remember there's more to brushing than simply brushing the teeth. Brushing your tongue for a minute, maybe more, will give you a cleaner mouth/breath, same with brushing your gums and the roof of your mouth; some people don't like using an electric brush on their tongue but you can turn it off and then brush it.

Plus flossing with also give you better breath and also give your dentist less things to complain about next time he sees you.

I can't brush my tongue or back teeth very well because of my insane gag reflex :(

It's that bad? Damn I've never heard of one like that. I'd probably still risk it once a day just for better breath though, but damn  :-\

I can stick half my brush down my throat and not vomit

I can get my teeth pretty well, it's the tongue that's the tough part.  I can do it for maybe a few seconds.

TVC, did you try one of these?

I'm not sure if it's helpful, but it's what we recommend to patients with intense gag reflexes.

If you want to get really hardcore about cleaning your tongue and gum line, you could try a waterpik.  They have different heads for your teeth, tongue, and gums.

I got it when I had a lot of trouble with brushing my gums when I had braces and they clean really fucking well.
