Get Smart - Complete Series: Impressions
« on: November 05, 2008, 11:49:09 AM »
I know a lot of you are big ol  :-\ over the movie, which I have yet to watch, but will because Anne is awesome in everything- much like Kate Beckinsale.

Anyway, the Complete Series set was released by HBO, which says right away high quality and attention to detail. The packaging is pretty awesome, but I question its ability to persist over repeat viewings. The outer packaging is a cardboard box, with its opening being a series of small doors that lead to the phone booth doors that lead to the individual season DVD sets. I remember the 1st season being released a few months ago, but never the remaining series. Not sure what happened there. I raise the question of durability because each season set is kind of hard to get out of the complete series box. If you arent careful its pretty easy to maul the box. So withdraw your dvds with CARE.

There's 130 episodes in here. That blows my mind since its only 5 seasons. Granted production was probably easier back then. Still thats a lot of value, considering you also get 8 hours of extras! The transfer quality is great, very clear considering the shows age, and every episode except the pilot was done in color.

Selecting the Episodes option from the menu takes to screens for each episode, what makes this kind fo special is that they had Barbara Feldon (Agent 99) outline each episode. Very cool.

Some of you still go BOO movie wuz  :-\, but the original TV series was some of the best stuff on television. Not to mention Mel Brooks had a hand in the show which meant I got jokes about chinese people saying the word "claw". Its all very 60s racist which makes LIBRULZ roll theyre eyes and makes me lol a little. They even call asian people "Orientals"!

Anyway, if you get it at best buy right now its like 109, but it normall goes for 30 dollars more. Pick this shit up if you like spy comedy.

I'm getting this.  Either for myself or as an Xmas gift for someone whose house I can invite myself to.

Get Smart has a special place in my media consuming heart, for the nostalgia of Nick at Nite (Dick Van Dyke!  F Troop!) and for its place in the Jewish Comedy Canon.  Mel Brooks!  Buck Henry!  Barbara Feldon might have been my first celebrity crush, too.

"Would you believe..."  That's still a great gag.

Get Smart, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, I wish modern sitcoms had fantastical premises like those shows did. Nowadays it's all just trendy people in their 20s sitting around making jokes about sex.

:lol I forgot all about the "Not Craw. Craw!".

I'll be picking this up sometime, easily one of the best comedies of all time.

Yeah, it holds up insanely well. I like the episode synopsis barbara delivers on each episode menu, sometimes she includes something that happened on the set during the shooting of the episode.

It would be interesting to hear what Barbara talks about.  I remember Don Adams said he didn't watch the shows because he can't stand laugh tracks, that's about the only Get Smart trivia I know.

I have a region-free player, but I like to buy box sets at a local store.  I've had cardboard-covered box sets get a little squashed in the mail sometimes.

Last night they were using a small explosive that can "open anything" on the lock of a safe, and when it went off all the file cabinet drawers in the room burst open. I lolled

This is how I felt going into the movie. It didn't deliver. Definitely a tween comedy.

I haven't seen the show yet, so no comment there.

Still holds up holy shit. Season 1 rocked but Season 2 is better than I remember. I just watched the episode where the Chief is kidnapped by a Chaos agent, so Smart kidnaps Chaos' best assassin, so what does the Chaos agent do? Kidnaps one of Controls best agents. This goes on until only Smart and the Chaos Agent are left and they are forced to do a 1 for 1 agent trade :lol

My favorite part is when Smart and the Chaos agent are about to negotiate they agree to put all their weapons on the table; the type and number hidden weapons are even until Smart pulls out a knife, and the Chaos agent admits he doesnt have one of those and Smart is like 'thats ok I have an extra' and gives it to him haha :lol
