this is a thread about and i quote "the dopest shiznizzle"

what do you not understand here

Wii Music is for dopes and is definitely shiznizzle.  It should remain unaltered on the list.

Fallout, Left 4 Dead, Dead Space, and Gears 2 have been my favorites that I've played this year, which are all kind of depressingly dark and gorey  :-\  At least Fallout isn't completely a shooter.
I placed my vote for Fallout, hopefully I won't stop enjoying it and regret my vote.  It's got some problems but I've been drawn into it more fully than any other game this year, as much as I love the others.

I'm surprised MGS4 has as many votes as it does.
Still want to play Fable.

Leper this filth.  MGS4 isn't even a game, much less the best of anything in any year.

It was close between Fallout 3 (which I haven't even finished yet) and Gears of War 2, but Gears takes the top spot for me as a whole package.

Any voting for MGS4 for game of the year on this forum or any other deserves to be beaten with their glorified paperweight that they call a PS3.  It's barely a game, and even when it is interactive, it's a mediocre at best.

The only thing that I'm really not liking about Fallout 3 is how soon your level caps.  I'm nearly level 20 and I've barely done half of the quests.  It's already gotten too easy, and I'm worried that I'll lose all non-achievement incentive to push on for anything other than the main quest.

But yeah, getting to that point was fucking amazing.

How do you even rate a game that is as un-interactive as the MGS games?  Combine that with a trainwreck of a story and you probably don't get a lot of people saying it's goty.  imo.

I can't be taken seriously? I've played Burnout Paradise more than any other game this year. It has given me more entertainment per dollar than any game so far this generation. It and Rock Band 2 have been my go to games when I want to play something. To date I've put over a 120 hours into Burnout Paradise. It's the best racing game and almost the best game this year.

Onto MGS4:
I'm a MGSfag. MGS4 is the final chapter in my favorite video game franchise ever.
For the life of me I don't understand why people seem to absolutely hate it.

But whatever, you view it whatever way you want. That weekend after June 12th I played through the game 3 times and I don't think any game this year has topped the experience.

the thing is that even though you can read internet posts and think you know how the games are, you really are basing that stuff on hyperbole.  MGS4 (or even MGS series in general) has people saying the cut scenes are so long, and yeah, they are -- but the actually parts when your playing the game are longer than most games released in the past few years.

I know that there is more gameplay than movie but there are still way too many cutscenes.  If I found the story interesting, maybe then I wouldn't think that the game is unplayable.  Nobody can deny how bad the writing is.

I'm not saying the story/writing isn't bad.  Most of the time spent in a cut scene is some awkward pause or stare into nothingness.  I'm just saying that the claim that the games don't have gameplay is overblown.  When I do replay an MGS game I just skip past the cut scenes.

Get these MGS apologists out of my reality.

I'm not actually making it sound good there tho.  I'm saying the cut scenes are long and saying that the actual 'gameplay' sections of the game are just as long as most other games today.  If anything it seems like I'm putting down other recent games for being short (which I don't mean to do)

I'd imagine that most of the people who voted for it as goty probably liked or even loved the story though.

Probably.  There was a thread on gaf a while back about best stories in games and people were legitimately listing MGS4 as one of them.

yeah, if we're talking enjoyment longevity, then it's still fallout 3 for me (97 hrs on my first play, and i'm at level ten on my second character)

runner-up is burnout paradise, still pop that in from time to wreck shit and do jumps, looking forward to the island dlc

third would be rock band, as i generally only play that when other people are over

That's a ridiculous statement, because I can think of dozens of games that have better core game systems than MGS4.  You know, I used to be a big Metal Gear Solid fan because the games were built around the ridiculous controls and camera, so it was always fair.  Aside from installation issues and having way too much of a mediocre story, the biggest sin of MGS4 is that they stopped halfway into improving the controls, so what you have is a game with shitting shooting/cover mechanics that often encourages you to shoot.  That's just not fun.  And the boss battles were uniformly shitty.

Act 1 was fair, Act 2 was by far the best.  Act 3 was absolutely terrible aside from the decent cutscene at the end.  Act 4 was cool for about 5 minutes.  Act 5 tested my patience as a gamer in every possible way.  I was saying this when it first came out, so I started the fucking bandwagon.

I'm with you on Burnout, though.  I really enjoyed it, warts and all.

the thing is that even though you can read internet posts and think you know how the games are, you really are basing that stuff on hyperbole.  MGS4 (or even MGS series in general) has people saying the cut scenes are so long, and yeah, they are -- but the actually parts when your playing the game are longer than most games released in the past few years.

What. The. Fuck.

There's about 6 hours of actual game.  And it's only replayable if you're a masochist.

i'm a massive Wipeout HD cigarillo and the game IS good, but it does eventually boil down to a massive cock tease.

Yeah... I could go for a decent sized map pack right around now. Not really having a problem with familiar tracks, as that's sort of how racing works in the first place, but I could definitely go for more of them.

i finished the game in like 11 hours. subtract the cutscene time from that and i finished the game 4 hours before i ever inserted the disk into the PS3 drive.

That's what I mean when I say people over exaggerate and others misinterpret.  But You did forget to mention the install times for each chapter.

Yeah, I guess I'm alone on this then.  At least for me MGS games are at least 10+ hours of pure gameplay (MGS4 is different with Act 3 that is essentially an in-game cutscene, rail sequence, and boss fight)

Probably Saints Row 2 for me, right now. Maybe I'm just a little hooked on it at the moment and I'll get over it soon, but it makes me laugh, there's shitloads to do, and it's consistently fun. That's enough for me.

of that 11 hours, i seriously doubt it was over 7 hours of game play though.

Which is about par for the course for a lot of next gen games, but certainly definitely NOT longer than most. Not by a long shot.

PS3 owners had more exclusives to choose from. Plus, 3 of the 4 exclusives were release within weeks of each other thus watering down the whole picture. Legs are important in these tight times. Let's raise this argument a couple months from now.

Gears 2, Fable 2, Banjo, and other 360 exclusives were also released within a few weeks of one another.  And let's get factual here.  The PS3 had 17 exclusives in 2008, including three versions of Singstar.  The 360 had 21 exclusives (30 if you count console exclusive).  Sfag misinformation is out of control.

It doesn't matter if we have this argument today or in 50 years.  MGS4 is still a mediocre game and has no place in "anything" of the year contention unless the award is for "Biggest Budget."

What exactly is it that you (and others) love so much about MGS4? (got a list just for you, AA!)
  • The substandard shooting mechanics?
  • The excessive loading between areas/installation?
  • The gigantic amount of cutscenes, especially bookending acts?
  • The ridiculous story?
  • Act 3?
  • The terrible boss battles (especially the psychobabble afterwards)?
  • The 90-minute ending?
  • The horrible pacing?
  • Respawning enemies?

I can understand how you can derive enjoyment out of the game (I enjoyed it enough to finish it), but to say it's the best game of the year?

1.) This is not a fact. The shooting is not factually substandard it is IN YOUR OPINION substandard. I don't agree with this opinion. In addition I play MGS as a stealth game. Shooting only occurred during boss battles and when I needed to tranq enemies.

2.) This is not even a factor at all. Wow a game has loading. Big deal.

3.) I'm a MGS fan. To bring up cutscenes and try to relate them as negatives to me doesn't work. They a large reason why I enjoy these games as much as I do.

4.) I do not claim that the story is OMG SO FUCKING AMAZING OSCAR WORTHY FUCK YEAH, but I love watching it unfold. I've been there since the beginning, and even though I don't agree with all the storytelling decisions I love watching it.

5.) The only low point about Act 3 is the "follow the frenchie" section. The cutscene, the chase, the boss battle, and the final cutscene were awesome. No point in arguing with me here. I liked it.
And every game has low points. The entire first two chapters of Gears of War 2 were kind of boring, but the game ramps up later on. Regardless of the boring first two sections Gears 2 is in my top ten.

6.) Thanks for your opinion on the boss battles. I don't agree. Especially on Crying Wolf, which is the best boss battle in the game.

7.) See point 4.

8.) Pacing was fine to me.

9.) Where? When?

Looks like MGS4 won the GOTY thread over at the other forum.
This is like the first year GAF didn't vote for a Nintendo game it seems like. Mario won last year and Zelda before that. Weird that Sony fanboys seemed to have taken over GAF. That whole topic is full of posts of people listing like ONLY 10 PS3 games and thats it.

Persona 4.  PS2 still best ever console confirmed.

You're just saying that because the game has Teddie, Kanji and Naoto.  It's like a pastiche of sexual confusion.

Keep it up :supergay

The only reasonable defense of the game that I've heard is when Drohne said that it is more interesting than almost anything released this year. Anyone would have a hard time defending the game by its mechanics or story

I placed a negative vote against MGS4 in that GAF thread, but I see that it did not help. It's just more evidence that proves PS3 owners have bad taste

The gnashing of teeth over people liking a game you don't is pathetic. Grade school level shit.

Act 4 was pretty cool and a nice throwback, 3 was pretty lame, 5 was absolutely terrible.

9.) Where? When?

1. It is a FACT that the shooting mechanics are substandard in comparison to any other good modern shooter.  The fact that you have to play it as a stealth game and only shot at bosses just proves my point.  It's not a coincidence that the only Act in the game that I really enjoyed (Act 2) is the only act that's designed from beginning to end with stealth in mind (aside from the shitty boss battles).  And it's undeniable that the cover mechanics are truly terrible and half-baked.

2. The game engine is ridiculously unoptimized.  In this day and age where I can move around huge open worlds with zero loading, the tiny play areas and frequent installations are just amateur, which is amazing since this is probably the most expensive game released this year.

3. I felt the same way back in 1998 when cutscenes were novel and mostly brief and to the point.  What we are stuck with now is preachy and incredibly long-winded.  Kojima needs an editor.  Badly.  The only one I thought was cool was the end of Act 3.

5. "Follow the Frenchie" was the majority of the Act.  The "loads every 30 seconds" chase scene was terrible.  Who thinks it's a good idea to put you in a chase scene without a decent, high-ammo weapon to use?!?  That just wasn't fun, at all.  I can give you dozens of games that have better on rails sections.

6. The boss battle scenarios aren't all bad.  However, they are sabotaged by the unwieldy controls.  Especially Crying Wolf.

8. Are you serious?  Between the uneven gameplay sections, the incredibly long cutscenes, the long loading/installation, and the endless before/after mission debriefings, you think it's well-paced?!?  YOU GO AN ENTIRE ACT WITHOUT PLAYING THE CORE GAME.  That's inexcusable.

9. It's easiest to see in Act 1, but it can happen throughout the game if/when you're spotted.  I know it's not the same as it is in COD4, but it's still ridiculously annoying to have to go hide in a locker for a minute at a time.  This was novel in 1998.  It's just annoying as fuck now.

That was not for MGS4 only. There are other games people like that other laugh at in here. People can try to pound their point down all day long, but they are still unlikely to sway the other's opinion.

My personal GOTY isn't even on the list.  Etrian Odyssey 2!  Altho once I get around to playing Fallout 3 this week I'm sure it will probably take the top spot.
