I guess you guys hate the series for its crazy plots, but that's exactly why I like it (along with the great characters). Obviously Hideo Kojima isn't going to be winning a Nobel Prize for Literature anytime soon, but I like getting mindfucked as much as the next guy. MGS stories are all in good fun.

As for the long cutscenes, that really depends on the person. I don't mind them at all.

If I wasn't incredibly homo for loving the aspects of MGS4 people both love and hate, I would probably dislike the long cutscenes, cheesy dialogue, and drop in gameplay after the first two chapters as well.  But I am.

I love MGS, but I'm also a vocal MGS4 hater.   MGS4 from the second half of act 3 through to the ending is my least favorite MGS ever. MGS4 acts 1 and 2 are excellent though, if not some of my favorite sequences in the series. 

MGS 1, 2, and 3 pack in the gameplay and cinema.  I usually skip the cinematics. Last half of MGS4 is cinematics and non-MGS gameplay

Both that, act 3, and later parts of act 4 were awesome the first time around.  Replaying them gets a bit annoying, especially act 3.

I'm still hoping for an MGS4 expansion that is just bits like Act 1 and 2 but mixed with Portable Ops style.

My problem with the series is each game, aside from the first one (which is by far my favorite...) has a big flaw:

MGS2 - too many Codec scenes, Raiden... LOVED the plot though
MGS3 - annoying injury recovery system...
MGS4 - game falls apart after chapter 2 (though I liked chapter 4 quite a bit!), some annoying camera stuff, main plot twist was a bit disappointing

I'd say overall I'm a big fan of the series though...

How the hell does MGS2 pack in the cutscenes and gameplay? 1/3rd of the game is the tanker (), 1/3rd is defusing bombs, and the final third is running around naked.

MGS4 is the sequel to MGS1 and 2 in every way...which is what Kojima promised and made. It's unfortunate some fans didn't like how he had to wrap up 20 years of animu in 20 hours, but that's how life is.

You revisit Shadow Moses in HD. Except for the opening of the act, where you get to play a bit of MGS1 (PS1) emulated.

It's a very cool surprise.

there are some little annoying robots there and you hear quotes from MGS1 in the background while you run to the spot where you fought liquid. Looks fucking excellent, but it's pretty disappointing-- the entire map of MGS1 would've made an awesome stealth level...instead you sneak by some robots, then do some TPS/rail shooting for an hour or two.

I tried MGS4 briefly.  The controls are fine.  It's just that everyone says essentially the same thing: Pretty good or great the first two acts, then goes to shit because the game play takes a rest and you watch cut scenes x 1000.  But I'll check it out for myself one day.

I liked MGS3S a lot but when it comes down to it it's only the original that I can say I really, really, REALLY liked back then.

MGS2 was great. I liked everything about it except for the lackluster bosses (Fatman excluded). The sword controls for the last portion of the game were on Too Human levels of horrible.
