A middle-aged white woman returning a full season of Gilmore Girls, came in the store angry. Totally enraged. She tells me as a woman purchaser of rental items and videos (exact words) that she could not stand that pornography we were trying to sell in a store frequented by women. She pointed to a rack of Maxim and Blender magazines near the cashwrap. She railed against objectifying women and if we were to do so, we should give equal rack space to barely clothed men. I told her that if she felt so passionately about the subject, that she should contact corporate customer care (and I provided the number), as they dictate specifically what goes up and in what order in corporate marketing guidelines.
She took the number and walked away.
She picked up another stack of Gilmore Girls DVDs and said, "These will be the last movies I ever rent here, and if you could work in such a sexist environment with no objections, then calling this dumb number will do nothing! It's totally sick what you do here."
I diplomatically told her that the placement of marketing items was not my decision, nor my boss' (she wanted to speak with the DM) and she called me a pervert. She said other women feel the same way and left mumbling about how I worked for an evil company.
Then some old black guy came up and started laughing. I asked him what's up and he was like, "Only white people [points to Maxim] would consider this pornography!"
