"Why the hell not?" Have I mentioned the fact that Hollywood is being relentless in getting the word about Blu-ray Disc out? You're not going to see that with downloading. Why, you ask? You want the real clincher? The REAL reason why Blu-ray is going to be around a long time, and downloading isn't going to take over for a very long time? It's not just bandwidth, folks, though that's a problem too and will be for a while. No, the real roadblock is profit. Hollywood studios will NEVER be able to sell you a downloaded movie for $29.99 or $39.99. It'll NEVER happen. That would be like telling hardcore gamers that they can't buy games on physical discs anymore, but they still have to pay $60 for the latest, greatest titles. What this means is that downloading - best case - is going to take over the movie rental market, not sales.

People still buy PC games on physical disc?

It's sad that even after Blu Ray killed HD-DVD, all you read about it is people damage controlling articles about how it's dying.

I'd be pretty pissed if I couldn't have a physical copy of a game.

I've re-bought games on Steam I have a physical copy of (Dawn of War). Much more convenient to have it on my Steam list.

I also have Burnout Paradise on PSN and not disc. Again, I don't have to get off my ass to find the disc if I want to play it.

i like physical copies of stuff, but that's not the reason why blu ray isn't taking off the way they thought it would

And he killed his whole meltdown today by bringing up games, which he knows nothing of. All he knows is that the PS3 also can play games in addition to Blu-Ray and that the Xbox is made by evil HD-DVD mastermind Micro$oft and that's why downloading is the great satan!

It's not taking off because people can't tell the fucking difference between that $400 Blu-Ray player running a $40 movie and their $60 upconverting DVD player running a $5 DVD they just picked up at Wal-Mart. (this post would cue a ton of screenshot comparisons on GAF screaming SEE THE DIFFERENCE!!!!oneoneone).

yeah, $35 movies is what's keeping blu ray from taking off, at least according to my AV aficionado friends

one of my pals owns around 800 DVDs, and he's not about to replace them all with blu rays - he owns around 20 blu rays

It's like this for me:

Games = don't care about having a physical copy anymore. There's so many XBL/PSN/VC games I've just become used to not having to stick a DVD into a machine to play something these days. Steam, thus, is awesome.

Movies = Yes I want a physical copy, but I'm not against a digital one.

band of brothers looks pretty awesome on blu ray, by the way

and it was only $55

i bought the dvd set when it was $80

more pricing like that and i'll buy more blu rays

also some fucking quality control and actual remastering would be nice, butch cassidy and the sundance kid looked like shit

i was so disappointed, one of my favorite films - that killed a lot of my blu ray interest in collecting older films, it's just going to be so hit or miss depending on the source material

really, though, i'm just not much of a movie collector anymore, so i'm fine with downloading

Pretty much this. Prices are coming down, but some studios are better than others. Fox (of course) fucking sucks. But Mad Men is pretty much the same price on both DVD and Blu-ray. Other sets, like The Godfather Collection, Planet Earth and Band of Brothers, are regularly only 10 bucks more on Blu-ray. Like I posted in another thread, the DeepDiscount deal is the best way to buy some Blu-rays right now. Can get all four of those sets for $160.

And oh yeah, Steam is awesome.

I'm just glad the HD medium wars are off the gaming sites now (or at least, out of my way.)

Still waiting for a vocal group of "HD-DVD was actually better" guys to pop up in a couple years--long after anyone cares to verify their claims.

I still buy stuff in a box, I hate downloading full games. EA has been working overtime to change my mind, with its 5 install then a call to EA policy for games.

i'm annoyed at paying full price for new releases, and i hope that means that more money goes to the developers

i am probably hilariously naive

Blu-ray was dead format even before its release,if Hollywood wants to replace dvd they have to release something totally different from optical discs and non-bc players.
