Demo, Demo, Demo

Dead Space coulda been this year's Bioshock if it had a demo.

I thought it was this years Bioshock when I played it.  But those numbers tell differently.

Maybe you're right and it's the demo factor.  I guess we'll see how ME does.

Surprised so many games did relatively poor (<200k).  Publishers see this and yet they'll still be stupid and release everything in Oct/Nov again next year.  smh

Wait a minute, are we talking about US sales only? If that's the case, I'd have to alter my KZ2 prediction a bit. I think it will be massive, but that's including both territories.

dead space didn't sell because there's a shit fuckton of games out this time of year, and stuff like gears 2 and cod5 are familiar sure bets

Well, everyone in the industry has been saying how games & dvds & movie theater ticket sales won't be affected by this recession because they are cheap forms of entertainment that people will fall back on as they cut down on bigger purchases.

I'd imagine it's also quite difficult to market well. It's a horror game in which the key gameplay element involves strategic dismemberment of reanimated corpses. How exactly do you market that to a wide audience?

dvds and movies are under $20 a pop. games are $40-$60. even the folks buying games will hafta settle for one-two games this season instead of several. expect LOTS of big losers!

Because men do what women tell them to do, irrespective of account standings. One couple shows off the Wii to their friends, and makes special note of how much the kids love it. And then the nagging starts. In some cases, the male believes that getting the wife onboard the video game train will somehow help with future entertainment purchases, but that of course rarely works. So they have a Wii, and soon they hate it.

That, and it's still floating on the elusive treasure image, I think. So they become impulse buys because, hey, who knows when they will come across another Wii.

duckman: your post negates the "poor economy" excuse, though

"money's tight, but hey let's grab one of them $250 wiis over a $60 game, and while we're at it let's grab one of them $90 plastic boards you stand on"

i don't buy the poor economy reasoning

dead space failed because of fallout 3, and guitar hero, and lbp, and gears 2, and every other game which came out in a two-week period

i expect the same for mirror's edge

publishers will learn some painful financial lessons this holiday season

It's too much in the same timeframe, that is why we see sales are so spread out. All these game should have good legs over the coming months because who can afford to drop $300-$400 in a span of 3 weeks on games?

Yeah, it's not a pretty one. Not that I'd really know; I barely got to play the beta due to connection issues. Good job on that, Sony, what with it being an online-only game and all.

Dead Space should have been an August release. Publishers pushing full price new IP in the current economic climate against established IP are pushing shit up a hill. Guaranteed Dead Space in August does 2x what it did in October.

Man these numbers are depressing.  I really thought Fallout/Dead Space/Saints Row/Far Cry would sell more than that.  I don't want a waggle future.

But then the only game I've bought in the last 6 months is Gears2, Gameflying the rest.  I guess I'm part of the problem.

You know what's a cheap fucking form of entertainment? Monopoly. Or your mom screaming at your dad because of said monopoly. Or your grandma getting caught cheating.

You can play monopoly until your head explodes.

You know what's not cheap entertainment? Mirror's Edge.

Too much effort for a joke character.

My guess is that someone invited him here (fess up!) and he has been keeping tabs on this place since.  This is the kind of loser that spends all day making huge .gifs by combing through Star Trek to see if the mouths resemble each other, he would exactly be the type to stalk the board.

Besides, RubxQub isn't clever enough to pull that kind of a ruse.  He's not the shiniest penny in the fountain.

LBP probably did sell systems, probably a few thousand, just not enough to win internet fanboy warz.

LBP's biggest thing going against it is its baffling advertising which fails to let consumers know just why they want to fork over $60 or $400+ for this thing.  Either Sony will have to re-advertise the game or hope that word of mouth will spread.  Although to be honest, the only somewhat recent instance where I knew that word of mouth resulted in a resounding success was GTA3.

I will admit that I though it would sell 500k total in the US.  With over 200k now, it might hit a million overall.

Sorny's PR:

Quote
Sony Computer Entertainment America has responded to the October 2008 video game sales figures for the US, as compiled by NPD Group.

190,000 units of the PS3 were sold to consumers during October, a figure SCEA notes is an increase of 56 per cent compared to October 2007. According to Sony this year-on-year increase in sales can be attributed to "an unmatched line-up of first-party and third-party titles". Speaking of which, Sony noted that 2.3 million PS3 software units were sold during October, representing a 200 per cent year-over-year increase.

Regarding the PSP, Sony noted that sales of 193,000 units represented a year-to-date growth of 9 per cent. Sony also stated that the PS2 sold a further 136,000 units and 1.7 million software units. The console's installed base is now over 43 million units in the US.
