Anyone going to go see Quantum of Solace?

I'm pretty much with Solo.

The best stuff was between Bond and Mathis, and I really wish that film kept that type of chemistry.  Felix and Bond are another great coupling, but they get - what? - maybe thirty seconds to speak to one another.

The plot was almost unintelligible and for the first hour or so (and I'm not kidding here), Bond could not go more than a minute of screen time before ERUPTIN' IN A FURIOS ACTION SCENE!!!

It was almost exhausting.

It gets a pass for Daniel Craig keeping the whole thing afloat and nothing about it is terrible (save for maybe the LOL-inducing LETS THROW UR FRIEND IN THE GARBAGE scene), but it's totally unmemorable.  I think we'll view this as a stopgap between what I'm hoping will be a superb sequel.

Best part was Bond listening in on the Quantum meeting.

Glad to hear we're in agreement - its been too long, my old friend! You said it right though, the plot is unintelligible and the whole darn thing is an exhausting exercise in going nowhere. I also agree that nothing about the film is terrible, its just that nothing about it is extremely well done, either. QoS is the definition of mediocrity.

I don't know if I'd call it mediocre.  I definitely will have to see it again - the pacing is so ridiculous that it's near impossible to figure out what's going on.  Maybe with additional viewings it will prove otherwise, but I will most certainly wait 'till DVD.

Im giving it one more theatrical viewing, myself. Then anything beyond that will be Bluray. All I know is that I walked out of CR wanting to see it again because it was awesome, but I walked out of QoS wanting to see it again to see if I really witnessed the clusterfuck that I thought I did.

I saw it last night and I completely didn't care about the story.  You don't even really know what's going on during the first half.  the plot is too vague for too long.  I heard people around me actually asking "does this have a point?"  and "why are they doing this?"

it was hard not to zone out between action scenes.

I also saw Madagascar 2.  Madagascar 2 was better.

I think Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune actually said it best:

That’s Quantum Of Solace in a nutshell - too frenetic, too much focus on rapid fire action, too plot-driven. All of the factors combine to leave no room for the one thing that made the previous film work so well – the human factor. Quantum Of Solace is a solid action movie on its own, but is nothing less than a massive disappointment as the direct sequel to a film that seemed to have locked everything into place for the future of the series.

As much as I liked the movie, I fully agree.

The worst thing about the movie actually, was the pacing.  Holy crap.  It went from "YES!  HOLY SHIT!" to "Hurry the fuck up" like 10 times.  The story advanced in short bursts really with lots of filler crap between.  It's like they they only had about 30 minutes of a legitimate movie that was artificially spread apart by random crap trying to make it longer..

Well, I can totally see why you don't like it.  I'm not going to argue it, cause I think you're right.  But I don't think its AS disappointing as it could've been--at least it's not Die Another Day.

Like I said, I still like Craig and I like how they set up his future films--this one just felt more of an expansion pack rather than a full-on sequel.

I hated Casino Royale but even I liked QoS.  The action was awesome, nobody can disagree with that.  The plot could have used some more rogaine on it's pubes to more thoroughly explain the whole backstory with the criminals and their conspiracies but I'm sure that the dvd cut will add something to that at least.  There is also a corny whore-girl (Fields) that was about as believable as any other bond-whore.  However, it was refreshing how there wasn't any "cunning linguist" emo-douche double-entendres or hip parkour bullshit action scenes.

Whatever you think of other Bond movies, you'll have fun watching this.  It never drags on like Casino Royale and it nearly eliminated the corniness of the past Bond movies.

My favorite part was when they parachuted out of the plane fell for thousands of feet and opened the parachute inside a sink hole with like 10 feet left and still survived and perfectly able to walk.

Actually my favorite part was when bond killed everyone like 20 times. Even though it was always in his best interest to keep someone alive for questioning.

Beardo, the building blows up because of the hydrogen tanks that were mentioned multiple times.  Bond also only kills people after they try to kill him.  It was still a pretty corny movie but it's target audience is 13 year old boys. iirc, he accidentally kills the assassin in the hotel room.

And Brosnan was the best Bond considering how much he salvaged the shitty scripts he worked with.

I just saw QOS, I rather enjoyed it.  Good stuff, some really good action scenes, lacks the bloat of many latter day Bond films, and as near as I could tell, hardly any CGI in the whole flick (yes, that's a good thing).

By the way, how the hell did this movie cost 200 million dollars?  Its reasonably short, has no expensive movie stars (Craig only got about 10 mil to be in it), and was largely shot in Chile (a cheap filmmaking country).  Where did the money go?

They filmed it in a shitton of places, and a lot of the set pieces (private jets and shit) were probably super expensive. And all of the CGI. Also, because of all these factors, it probably had an enormous crew. Just a few guesses.

After watching QoS yesterday with the lowest of expectations, I am left wondering now, what kind of movie people were expecting with it.

It was a solid action movie, was Bondmovie enough for me, but thankfully not having the usual Bond shitty themes like Q and his shitty gimmicks, skiraces with machineguns etc.

I like the direction the Bondmovies are going.


And Craig is the best Bond i can imagine.


QoS is rating 7.5 - 8.0 for me...
