I tip my hat to you guys who have the patience and skills to finish this game.

I tried getting back into it and playing it today.  Here is how it went:
-Do rooftop run night stage = ok, no pain.
-Do Hoolaska day stage = kinda shitty, annoying Sonic 2006 deaths here and there because of the camera
-Go to hunan = omg, the framerate is AWFUL
-Do dragon night stage = oh wait, you need to be lvl.3 medals and you are like 10 short.
-Spend an hour running around all the hub stages and towns collecting all the moon/sun medals + redo a few sonic day stages and TRY to get more medals but I barely get any because they are so fucking fast and when you miss one most of the time you have to restart the entire stage if you want it.
-Do dragon night stage = SO MUCH TRIAL AND ERROR DEATH IN PLATFORMING.  OMG
-Fight pheonix boss = FRAMERATE IS SO BAD I AM STILL DOING COMBO WHEN QTE APPEARS AND IT HITS THE WRONG BUTTON.  FRAMERATE IS SO BAD I GRAB A BARREL AND TURN TO THROW IT AND HIT THROW AND HE DOESN'T TURN AND THROWS IT AT A WALL
-Go do rooftop run day stage = Kinda good, but then kinda shitty towards the end with all the robot beams and stuff
-Go do dragon day stage = OH WAIT YOU NEED TO BE LVL.4 MEDALS AND YOU ARE 10 SHORT
-Since I've gotten most of the hub/town ones that means I'd need to replay a THIRTY MINUTE LONG SHITTY WEREHOG LEVELS to get more Sun medals...I'm done for the day.  Maybe another day.
-Go and check faq to see what the final max medal level is.  If it's 4 then maybe I will bare it and do another hour of medal grinding and then just finish off the rest of the stages.
-Reads faq...LEVEL 7 (120 MEDALS REQUIRED)...WTF!??!?!?
......I'm done with this game

I looooove the graphics, but no game has made me want to throw my controller through a wall like this in a long time.  The camera/controls SUCK SO BAD and the game design with the medal grinding is horrible.  I hate Sonic.  :maf

Give it another try. You'll dig the upcoming stuff.

And :O at demi. True skill  :bow2

I wish I could find a good faq that at least said HERE ARE WHERE THE MEDALS ARE AT: GO GET THEM.

All the faqs are for the Wii game and the Wii game is like completely different or something.  I was using the one X360 faq on gamefaqs and it's really terribly organized.

I dunno, the thought of playing 2 levels + boss -> medal grind for an hour -> 2 levels + boss -> medal grind for an hour -> repeat a few more times sounds horrible.  Especially when 1 of those 2 levels tends to suck each time and the other is 50/50 chance of being good.

You don't need a FAQ. Go to each town hub, and collect the coins for both the night and day bits. You will - guaranteed - have enough coins to complete the game

I already did that and I'm short to get to lvl.4.

I mean I almost get ZERO medals in the levels.  In the daylight stages I have like 0/3, 2/7 for most.  In the nighttime ones I have like 5/9, 2/4 for most.  The problem is that I hate the levels the first time so I don't really want to replay them unless I know EXACTLY where each medal is so I don't have to look for it and jump to my death 50 times trying to find them.

Ok I gave it another shot and did some serious medal grinding before I did any levels.  I had ~65 medals by the time I finished the 4th boss and I should have about 85 by the time I finish the 5th boss next time I play which would let me access medal 6 stages.  I'm just worried about getting 120 medals for the last ones.  There's only like 1 or 2 towns left now to scourge for medals and I'm seriously terrible at getting medals during the daytime Sonic stages.  I did Arid Sand Day and I got 1 sun medal, 1 moon medal total :(  The Sonic stages are too fast for me, I just hold forward the whole time and keep tapping X.  I have no idea what is happening in them.  I get most of the medals in the Werehog stages though.

I don't really know why I'm playing it outside the graphics though ^^;  I've skipped every cutscene in the game so far so I have no idea what the story is.  I haven't talked to any NPCs in the town except when I had to at the start to advance.  I haven't done any of their missions.  I haven't bought anything at the shops.  I'm just doing levels and I sort of enjoy them at times and then sort of don't at times when they are annoying.  I guess I just feel like I've put a bunch of time in so I might as well finish it instead of having it sit forever unfinished on the shelf.  Last Sonic game I actually finished was Sonic Adventure 1.  :(

Also the framerate in this game is so fucking terrible outside of the Sonic Day stages.  It's like they didn't even care to optimize anything.  Empire City runs at like FIVE FRAMES PER SECOND and it's not even a great looking area.  Shambar runs soooo choppy too.  Ughhh, the engine looks awesome at times, but then chug chug chug.

 :rofl

I'm determined to finish it, but at this point my IGN score breakdown would be:

Presentation = 7.0; Cutscenes are terrible but you can skip them
Graphics = 7.0; Game looks amazing but framerate is terrible a lot
Sound = 4.0; Voice acting is awful, music is forgettable
Gameplay = 1.0; Plays like shit
Replay value = 7.0; Lot's of mini-games and hidden stuff but they all play like shit
Overall (not a sum of the above) = 1.0; It's a sonic game

I agree.

I got to what I guess is the last level before Eggman, Jungle Joyride at Adabat during the daytime and it needs 120 sun medals jeeeeeezus.  I thought I was doing great with medals and ahead of the game but I only have 105 and I have every single one from the towns & entrance stages.

This is going to be a pain.  >_<  Do I need to talk to the townspeople and do their stupid missions to get medals?

Ok, redid the very first Werehog stage and got all the medals.  Now I only need 7 Sun Medals.

You can get some medals by giving the Professor souvenirs, and SOME town missions do have medals

I never even got a single souvenir.  I thought I did but when I went to hand them to the professor it says I have none.  But I remember getting things in the werehog levels and it said "YOU SHOULD GIVE THIS TO THE PROFESSOR".  I wonder wtf happened.  I want the achievement for giving your first souvenir to him  :maf

I got together enough Sun medals and did Jungle Joyride Day.  That was HARD.  Partly because the framerate was like in single digits.  I thought my X360 was dying :(  I'm glad I stocked up on lives when medal grinding.  Beat the Egg Lancer too.

So since there aren't any night stages that require level 7 moon, and since I have 116 moon medals, is there any point in finding 4 more to get to moon level 7?  Is there an achievement for having both moon/sun at lvl.7?  I already got the 100 medal achievement for both moon/sun.

Also I'm guessing the tails level -> eggman level -> final bosses is going to be non-stop hard.  Where is a good place to grind extra lives?  I probably want like 20 before I attempt it.  Junglejoyride Day took me 9 >_<  Also is the eggman stage a Werehog or Sonic stage?

You can buy souvenirs from the various shops

There are achievements for getting half the medals, then all the medals

The eggman stage is BOTH

Thanks.  Is the Tails/Eggman/Bosses stuff a marathon?  What happens if you die and get game over?  Does it pop you out before the tails ride and you have to do that all over again?

demi

Tails level is stand-alone, then you get to go to the Eggman hubworld, which from there is a non-stop thrill ride to the end of the game. When you do beat the game, you can go straight to the final boss whenever you want (level select)

Hmmmm, but if I die on the boss and game over do I have to do the pre-boss final level over again?

Just trying to figure out if I need to grind a bunch of spare lives before attempting this.

demi

I'm pretty sure you can go straight to the boss

Cool.  Will skip grinding then and just prepare for a lot of retries until I beat it!

Holy shit.  I game over'd 40 minutes into the last stage.

I'm not doing that again.  Done with the game I guess.   :-\

So many parts of the final stage were total bullshit.  The heat room with the pipes was AHHHHHHHHHH.  I DO NOT WANT TO DO THAT AGAIN. AHHHHH.

I was at the sonic part after that where you were running forward on the belt with the lasers and spikes and bricks.  WHEN DOES THE LEVEL END!?!?!??!

A lot of lives? I did it in one, lolz

I'm stupid, I didn't grind lives and I tried it again.  Spent another 20 mins at the boiler room pipes which are THE WORST THING EVER but blew through the rest.

I just past the free falling area and I'm about 25 mins in.  I just turned into werehog IS THIS ALMOST OVER?!!?!?!?!.

The game has good achievements.  That's the best thing I will ever say about it.

I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever play a Sonic game again after this.
