Cenarius right now has a 124 minute queue to play WoW. If Mythic is wondering where their player base is vanishing to (judging by the impossible to launch scenarios and empty newbie zones)...

I always wondered if the myth that publishers believe - that there is more than enough users for more than one MMO is true.  Apparently not.

The obvious untapped market is console MMORPGs.

Game Boy : handheld market :: World of Warcraft : MMO market

So many unemployed staff members left in Blizzard's wake.

Warhammer is dead. They need to start merging servers now. That 800,000 active subscribers is either completely BS or it's split between two servers as every other server is a ghost town.

wtf, you have to wait in a server line to play?  I guess I won't join that server when I start up a sub.

As for Conan and Warhammer, seems like they both had some issues that prevented them from fully delivering.  I still think that if someone can make an MMO in a modern setting that is near WoW quality, it can stand on its own.  Even warhammer may survive for a long time.

its sad because theres some awesome stuff in warhammer. just launched at the wrong time and needed some more time to optimise it. my warhammer account was closed last week for the Q4 rush. might look into it again in january but im not going back to wow

the oceanic server login times are terrible now for WOW too. 2hr+ queues on everything

Warhammer and Conan will live on, just not compete. Also Blizzard is doing free transfers for those suffering queues.

what's this queue situation anyway...just on the more popular servers at peak times, I hope?

Mal'ganis has an hour+ queue right now.

The queues will be gone in about a week though, if things play out like they did when TBC launched.

Anyway, the bottom line is this: most MMOs our right now are more or less Everquest, with a few tweaks here and there to make them stand out. WOW is far and away the best Everquest style MMO ever made, and there is simply no argument otherwise. As long as dudes try to compete with WOW by making their own Everquest clones, they are going to find themselves steamrolled.

The only way to beat WOW is to not compete with it. You have to think outside the box and create a MMO that isn't just reskinned Everquest.

I want an updated Ultima MMO. More about the day to day shit of crafting, exploring and stuff instead of all of it being purely quest based and trying to advance by grinding from one region to the next.

Nintendo would never make a functional MMO.  There might be PEDOPHILES on the internet. :o

The Pokemon MMO always gets pulled out in these conversations as some sort of theoretical game changer, but I really don't see it. Pokemon may have as many, or hell, many MORE fans than Warcraft, but how many of them have credit cards, or the persuasive skills to convince someone who does to pony up $15 a month?

And ignoring that, Nintendo's never made a game with competent online, never mind something ridiculous like a MMO.

It's too bad, a Pokemon MMO could be amazing. Nintendo would rather release rehashes every couple years

I figured Warhammer would have some success due to it being a successful IP/loyal fanbase but it seems like the game will have a decent sized population while most people jump back to WoW. On the other hand I never understood the decision to make a Conan MMO. Oh well, moral of the story: don't make heavy fantasy MMOs while WoW is still king.

Would a big, free MMO be feasible? Maybe something more modern than fantasy set, with lots of in-game advertising to pay for shit.

They'd probably simplify the pay system and make it cheaper.  Nintendo hasn't made a game with competent online, but they could pull the talent and R+D to make something ridiculous (or something low tech but fully functional from which to profit ridiculously off of, as is their current philosophy.)  On the other hand, MMOs might be kind of a hard sell to tweens and younger and their parents.  My nephew loves the cards, species lists, and all that shit, but probably doesn't play the game for even an hour a day.

If Nintendo did it they'd no doubt offer pay cards; they aren't stupid

i figure a Pokemon MMO would end up like PSO, big meeting place to trade and you go off and do your own instanced questing.

I too would like a more laid back mmo with exploring and crafting and non-combat jobs. I wished I'd been in the early SWG because that sounds like what I want to do.

After watching my favorite game series of all time being turned into an MMO, playing it and hating it, I have effectively decided MMO's aren't for me.

WoW wins because it attracts casuals. Casuals don't want to play FPS games.

there has to be a market out there for a non-combat driven mmo based on exploration and crafting or something.

I just don't see it happening. It's an utopian idea. Too hard to realize.

An economy based MMO like EVE is prob the closest you can get? Didn't really play it though.

Pre-NGE SWG.
