Mirror's Edge rocks.

I can't believe anyone is excited to see a carbon copy clone like World at War succeed, though.  It just encourages companies to keep delivering rehashes.

How could the brits do this to their own LBP :'(

Oh and now that Mirror's Edge is supposedly bombing (like DS) prepare for EA going back to their non-awesome-wowsome/milkage ways.

I just hope that this isn't the case in the US to (for ME).

EA can go out in a blaze of quality! (as long as we ignore the occasional NFS or Facebreaker)

What's sad is that the buggy, broken, shitty new Need for Speed title will likely outsell Dead Space and Mirror's Edge combined.  It's sad to see, but the game buying public is basically encouraging companies to rehash games and release crap.  There simply aren't enough people out there that appreciate original games with actual substance (or at least high quality IPs that refine an existing genre).

I'd say it was the worst possible time for EA to release Mirror's Edge, though.  The game is NOT casual friendly at all.  It's very challenging and the first playthrough is likely to be the least enjoyable for most people as it relies heavily on skill and understanding.  I can certainly see why some people dislike the game.  To release such a title in the midst of games that do sell in huge numbers was just a mistake.  The economy sucks right now and while entertainment tends to perform well during such times, people only have so much money to throw at it.  Mirror's Edge is much to niche and is going to bomb as a result.

Hopefully EA is not discouraged by this and continues to allow original development to occur alongside yearly money makers.

And people said COD:WaW was going to bomb
Nobody claimed it would be anything other than a success.  It has always been obvious that it would sell in HUGE numbers.  It's not as if the average consumer is even aware that the game was developed by a different studio.  Honestly, it's basically a WWII duplicate of CoD4.  It was always going to be massive.  Many of us, however, did not wish to see it succeed at the expense of more original, higher quality titles.

Of course, there is a flipside there, in that I'd prefer to see something like CoD succeed over the shit Nintendo continues to crank out.  If it comes down to Call of Duty versus Wii Fit or Wii Music I'd much rather see CoD take off.  Despite its repetitive nature, at least the games can be somewhat enjoyable.  :D

Is Mirror Edge on the PC too Dark? And how demanding is the engine?
Not yet.  :(  Seriously, I was really bummed by the lack of a PC version as a perfect 60 fps would have been awesome for the game.  It is supposed to hit the PC sometime next year.  With its failure, however, I have to wonder if that will still occur.  Of course, the lack of PC license fees and the fact that it's probably near completion should allow it to see the light of day.

Yeah, I honestly don't get it.  You can stick it where you want and it does the trick, I never had to make blind jumps or anything.

The only fault I could find was that your view can be obscured by foliage but that was when standing around or hanging on a ledge and it was just a matter of moving it a bit.

No, I've finished the game three times, played through several of the speed runs, and have been working on time trials.  The game was a tad frustrating during my first playthrough, but becomes an absolute joy the more you play.  Each stage is akin to a zone in an old Sonic Megadrive title in that you just want to replay them and work on improving your skills.  There is so much depth to the controls and execution of everything and it feels incredible when you pull it off.  This isn't a game I feel can be fully appreciated by simply playing through it once and calling it quits.  Your first playthrough is likely to be the low point of the game.

Due to that type of design, however, the game is most certainly NOT for everyone and I'm not surprised that it is failing at retail.  I'd imagine the general gaming public would end up disliking the game.  Everyone is so trained these days to believe that a single run through the "story" mode is all a game can offer, but that just isn't true.  This is a very old school game with new school mechanics and visuals.

I disagree.

I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the game during my first playthrough (I most certainly did).  I am, however, suggesting that the game becomes significantly more enjoyable as you spend more time with it and learn it.  Is this how people viewed old Sonic games?  What about other skill based action games?  My first time with Metal Slug 3 sure as hell wasn't the most enjoyable.  A lot of shooters, platformers, and other old school games were often most frustrating early on while you were coming to grips with them.  Mirror's Edge is not your typical "complete the story and you're done" kind of game.  It's not something everyone can appreciate, but that doesn't mean there is something wrong with its design.  It's a fantastic mix of past and present gaming conventions.

Unfortunately, that makes it somewhat niche which is precisely why your dislike of the game comes as no surprise to me.

BUT there is something wrong with mirrors edge design. for a game that relies on momentum and fluidity as its main draw it spends way to much time slowing you down and forcing you into combat (which was horrible because of the poorly implemented fighting mechanics).

dice simply fucked up the level design which is why the game is such wasted potential

btw the trial and error era of game design largely died off for a good reason (the exception being shmups).

That's just not true.  It may seem that way to an unskilled player, but as you learn the game, you'd be amazed at how much you are capable of.  The game mechanics are full of depth that is rare in such games these days.  You may have to confront enemies more often during your first playthrough, but there's nothing wrong with that as you can still complete the game.  Mirror's Edge offers all of the flash we've seen in games like Prince of Persia (last gen versions) without the automation.  You actually have to pull off the fancy moves yourself as the game won't autopilot for you.

Again, many of us love the design of the game.  It's simply not mainstream.

Splinter Cell demonstrates poor trial and error as it becomes a chore to complete many sections of the game thanks to the demand that you do it THEIR way.  You will be unable to proceed until you figure this out.  Mirror's Edge isn't like that at all.  There are almost always a number of different routes and approaches available to the player depending upon their skill level.  As you replay Splinter Cell there is always an obvious, optimal route the developers intend the player to move in.  The best paths in Mirror's Edge must be discovered by the player through understanding the game mechanics.  As I've spent more time with the game I've realized how much faster certain areas can be done simply through my knowledge of the game systems.

It's not broken, you simply don't like it.
