Loved:

Fallout 3 (I am officially a Bethesda fanboy)
RB2 (they improved everything I had a problem with re: RB1)
Left 4 Dead (I even have fun playing it single player since it's so different every time you play)

Liked:

COD: WaW (a little too COD4 in SP for me, but I love the MP)
LBP  (once they get their shit straight I'll like it better)
Brothers in Arms (useless MP, but I liked the SP campaign, hope they get to finish the story)

Regretted:

Carnival Games Mini Golf (still can't get over how fucked the controls were)
Guitar Hero World Tour (what a cluster fuck, sold it, I wish Van Halen would come over to RB)
Gears of War 2 (don't get yer panties in a wad, it's just not my kind of game)

I have Dead Space on the way from Gamefly to play over the holiday, and I still have to check out Far Cry and Resistance 2.

Biggest Regret:

Really disliked Resistance 2. I'm sure it's technically a good game, but it really felt like Insomniac finally sold out, so to speak. I guess I don't blame them.

Wasn't too hot on Gears of War 2, either, at least based on what I played of it. Nothing wrong with it, the skirmish moments were as good as ever, it just wasn't as exhilarating as I had expected a sequel to Gears of War to be. It felt really scripted, in a bad way. I also think I'm getting sick of the visual style.

LittleBigPlanet is awesome... as a platformer. I'd have liked to import some stuff to build my own levels, but the "open format" that Sony has been hollering about seems to have failed the one time it was really needed. Maybe I'll pick it up again once I can convince myself to drop money on an Eyetoy.

Dead Space was pretty great, for a while.

Wipeout HD is the best thing ever.

the only two games that I bought due to being unemployed and all that were Saints Row 2 and Gears of War 2. Still playing both of them and they are both fucking amazing. Going thorugh and getting the collectibles in Saints 2 now, it would be more fun if that interactive map wasnt so un-user friendly. Oh well at least its there. No way of saving your progress on the thing either. Luckily I remembered what I had done and shit (did the whole top island)

Only bought a few games recently.  I loved Saint's Row 2 even though the gameplay it rips off is seven years old now.  Currently loving Fallout 3 and wanting to go try the old Fallouts and Bethesda games because of it.  I felt kinda meh about what little I played of Dead Space.  I'm gonna start it up again soon, but what I played before had a very "been there, done that" kinda feel.  Oh well, still looking forward to it.  Also excited about Mirror's Edge and Castlevania DS because I'm sure I'll love both of those.

I haven't played much else-the political season always throws a real wrench in my gametime. 2006 (blue moon election here in NC) was an exception but I usually go a good five to six weeks without seriously playing anything.

Great reviews, I was kinda 'meh' on 6 and haven't played Zero yet... but I will have to agree exactly with your assessments on the other games in the series.

after 4, both 5 and 6 felt like such an amazing improvement - the high from switching to the more than competent 5 after the abysmal 4 probably kept me going through 6 with most of the excitement still present.

mega man 4 has got to be the worst mega man out there, period. this is why:

- awful robot masters with horrible weapons and attack patterns, some of them lacking any sort of real weapon or special attack
- toad man: what a piece of shit boss... jumps around while it rains, that's it
- skull man: shoots regular buster shots. that's his weapon... uh what?
- bright man: undodgeable attack, impossible to beat without taking damage
- SEVERAL bosses/enemies have undodgeable attacks BY DESIGN
- terrible level design with lots of useless, random gimmicks and lame traps even for mega man standards
- dr. cossack
- dr. cossack's weak ass bosses
- abysmal ABYSMAL music
- most slowdown and glitches in any mega man game ever
- super slow scrolling
- tons of sound glitches
- fucking HORRIBLE MUSIC AAAGH MY EARS
- newly introduced enemies are mostly frustrating, out of place and forgettable
- alternate paths in levels are ENTIRELY forgettable, misleading and useless
- JESUS FUCKING CHRIST THE MUSIC MAKE IT STOP

and mm7 just didn't feel like classic mega man. shit sound effects and music lacking any sort of punch. generally "softened" 16 bit aesthetic that just didn't feel right for classic mega man. controls didn't feel right. the buster felt like a frickin' toy with no real power. superfluous story bullshit. mostly lame bosses with a few exceptions. all in all it was okay, still a ton better than mm4. but a far cry from all the good nes mega man games.

people usually talk about a steady decline in quality. that really isn't the case though. mm4 is the black sheep. mm5 is still great and mm6 is competent too.

mm4 is easily the weakest game of the nes mm's.

but i think mm7 and 8 are way worse.

huh? slog through? it's not like you don't do gameplay during these chapters. The game beats you over the head? How? It doesn't claim to be different either. It's just fun. Do you like turn based combat? I thought some of the bosses were damn well designed.

I have an impeccable taste in games.  The only purchase I regret making this gen was the absolute disaster that was GTAIV.  The hype got to me with that one.

Fall games I bought, loved and fully recommend:

Far Cry 2 -- Simply the greatest single-player FPS of this gen.  If you don't agree, you're an impatient fool that didn't give it enough time.  The more you play, the better it gets.  It's an absolute masterpiece in every sense of the word.

Fable II -- One of the best RPGs I've ever played.  I loved everything about it.  The combat was so simple but yet so satisfying as well.  The story was solid, tons of charm and wit, voice acting was superb, graphics and art style peerless, just an awesome game.  It completely shits all over every japafag JRPG made from the last 10 years or so.

Fallout 3 -- I've only put like an hour into the game so far but I can already tell I'm going to love it. 

Gears of War 2  -- Nothing much to say here that hasn't been said already.  It's just an amazing game.  The single-player is an incredible blockbuster ride, horde mode is awesome, the multi-player (when it works) is a lot of fun as well.  This is a game I'll be playing well into the new year.

FIFA '09 -- Best soccer game ever made.  It completely shits all over PES.  The new king of football has officially been crowned.  The online play is amazing and so much fun.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe -- Last but not least is this gem.  Haters got owned with this one.  I'm totally hooked and play it everyday.  The combat is classic MK with several new features and improvements.  The graphics are great, especially the character models.  The story mode is excellent and probably the best story mode ever for a fighting game.  And finally, the online play is the best I've ever experienced for a fighting game.  The lag is non-existent, there are lobbies / chat rooms, leaderboards, everything.  MK vs. DC is easily the best fighter of this gen.

I really didn't think Dead Space was all that great.

Dead Space is weird.  When I played it I though it was quite good, like high 8/10 or low 9/10, but did not consider it GoTY-ish.  Then as more of the winter games rolled around and everything was flawed and nothing stood out (outside LBP but that game is very flawed as well), looking back on Dead Space I think it's probably the best game I've played this winter. 

I think I liked DS more after finishing Gears2.  Made me appreciate what an excellent RE4-style action experience DS was.  Was much more fun and intense de-limbing enemies than pumping 50 bullets into an enemy who hides most of the time and keeps popping his head out every 5 seconds.

I wonder if combat would be better on an easier mode.  Difficulty changes probably only effect the enemies in the game, so being able to take out an enemy in only one hit would probably make it much better.  The reason the combat sucks is that you have to stop before you can take them out.  You should be able to kick them in the face and continue to run knowing the guy is knocked out.

Fable 2: didn't hate or disliked it strongly, just felt too shallow and sold it after finishing it
Download games: Wipeout HD and Bionic Commando: I didn't dislike them, just lost interest in them too quickly that I feel I shouldn't have bought them.
