I'm a bit further into the game than you guys (7+ hours in). As someone who wasn't really that impressed with P3/FES (liked it overall!), I gotta say Persona 4 is a step in the right direction both gameplay and character design-wise. I can tell that trudging through the game will be a lot sweeter as I couldn't even play P3 for more than 3 hours straight.

Still has a shitty exploration camera though.  :maf

I'm liking these small, sometimes subtle changes to the P3 formula that ultimately make the gameplay more interesting.

1. You can only do dungeon crawling, at least so far, in the afternoon. so this means choosing between doing an S link, raising stats, doing a job, or doing the dungeon.

2. Since the game is based around weather, there's more tension since weather is more random, as opposed to the moon cycle. So since there's more tension - there's not a whole month to plan out my activities like in P3 - I have to weigh in and deduce what I want to do every single day in P4 so far to make it count. I'm watching the weather like a hawk.

3. The dungeon crawling actually feels like dungeon crawling. Traps from chests, huge floor labyrinths that don't take 10 seconds to clear like in P3, chests seem to appear less and drop less important stuff like in P3. There's no easy access to the bottom floor any more either and when you do hit the bottom floor your hp/sp aren't refilled. If you're in the dungeon and forget to buy the item that lets you teleport out...good luck. I forgot to get one on my last adventure through the dungeon I'm in. I started to panic because I had zero sp, I was running low on items, so I ran downstairs until I reached the first floor. Because enemies are harder to avoid now this made things scary for me, honestly. Little did I know that later on you can find save points that act as Terminals that take you back to the ground floor, but my point still stands. Compared to P3's relatively easy beginning, it feels like day and night.

4. Things just feel more balanced in general. I mean, in P3 you'd be dead pressed to NOT get a player advantage every battle. It was that simple. But in P4 due to the size of the enemies, the extremely SMALL corridors, it's not only hard to avoid them but also get player advantages. I'm also loving the new Shuffle Time.

Due to the time constraints and limit, the fact items cost wayyyy more now (I'm not sure if I accidentally put it on expert mode or what yet), and the amount of stuff you can do in one day P4 is already starting to feel more tense than the laid back atmosphere in P3.

I'm really glad they brought back the things I love about SMT too, like the "there's something behind this door, go in?" or enemy reinforcements...which are always fun when you're low on supplies.

So far I'm pretty satisfied, but I still haven't died yet. Then again, I'm just about ready to fight this dungeon's boss so we'll see.

Yeah, it does feel like it's been fine tuned to a better, more even challenge.

My one minor complaint so far is the wonky camera in the dungeons.  Sometimes it's hard to turn a corner and hit an enemy before they get you- in fact since you're stuck with 2 handed swords as your weapon this time, it's harder to time the hit on the enemies.  I always used one handed swords in P3 because it was easier to time the initial hit.

I guess I am trying to rush things in the first real dungeon- since you don't know for sure when you need to save this daffy bitch, I feel like I need to rush things.  It's only April 20th and I made it to the boss, lolz.  But since I made it with only like two sp restoring items and everybody half dead (and I think the bigger issue was that my personas kind of sucked) I eventually got beat down.  I wanted to make sure that I'll have time to save this dumb girl without trying to rush, so I checked:

You have until the 29th
[close]

Overall a slight improvement over FES, which is saying something.  It helps that the game looks a little better, the dungeons aren't monotonous and boring, and that the characters are more sympathetic this time around.  Also, being part of the save the world secret club isn't as cool as trying to solve a murder mystery, so P4 has that going for it too.

The instant travel thing really relieves a lot of headaches. When you play a game for 100 hours, sometimes traveling back and forth is annoying, and this feature is making things stress free for me already.

Also, how the hell is it possible to do a player advantage? lol The rules seem different from P3. Sometimes I hit their back, no go. Sometimes I hit their front, I get a player advantage.

Holy fuck I can't tell Triumph and Himu apart any more.

Himuro, advantage mainly depends on the level IIRC.  When you get stronger than the enemies you'll get them even if you run into them.  When the enemy is stronger you'll usually just not get jumped when you get a good slash in.

The fourth boss is kicking my ass right now though. It's got two helpers and it's a rough time trying to null their buffs, keep myself healed, and get my licks in. I might need to fuse a Persona with a second-tier single-target spell to put more concentrated offense onto one of the helpers.

I kept Orpheus longer than I kept Izanagi, cause Orpheus had that Fusion Spell with Apsaras that was useful for a long time. But since P4 doesn't have Fusion Spells, I didn't feel a need to keep him. Just make sure you fuse the buffs you like off to the new Persona if they're important to you.

Consider him wasted. I put all of his awesome buffs on my lovely Valkyrie, who also has media and skull crash or whatever. Basically my Valkyrie is awesome.

Are you serious.

P3's artbook wasn't all that hot. P4's artbook is way better, plus it is 100 pages and came with the game for free.

How can anyone complain about something they got for free?

It's interesting to see a game with a homosexual character and not treat them as effeminate cock ticklers with the gay accent and everything.

I got Chie's S link rank up to a good level and she learned the biggest most bad ass move ever. When an enemy is knocked down, sometimes she'll kick another enemy into the sky. It's so awesome. Chie > Yukari

Yeah, the Bathhouse dungeon is quite hilarious.

There are really a lot of minor improvements over P3 that just add up in this game:

-The fact that the dungeons are so different from one to the other keeps me from zoning out.
-It's actually a bit of a challenge to get a preemptive attack now.
-Characters are more likable, by and large.
-Having S. Links with all of your teammates makes more sense, and getting tangible benefits in battle is awesome.

Does anyone know where Yosuke hangs out for his S. Links tho?  Can't seem to find him.

Yeah, I don't usually like bothering with buffs/debuffs but with him you kind of HAVE to or he'll wreck your sorry ass.

Is anyone else using the option to give each party member their commands or do you have it set P3 style?  I've found that you can usually muddle through the first couple levels of a dungeon without setting everyone to individual commands, but higher up it gets more difficult.  Also, in P3 I kind of used Turd (the MC) to hit ALL of the weaknesses, but since you don't get your SP refreshed by going back to the lobby now it makes more sense to give everybody commands so as to more effectively conserve SP and exploit weaknesses.

Really, the game is much better than P3 in just about ever way.  Fuck, even demi would like Teddie.

What level are you guys? I'm level 25 for all characters. Last night I was like level 18 and since the difficulty of the boss I started to grind, but I couldn't stop. every time I saw what spell the character was going to get next I was all,"I'M GETTING THAT." Agilao really helped a lot against the boss. Rampage and Assault Drive are swoon.

Too bad Yosuke's skill set kinda sucks now.

Persona goals today: level up King Frost, finish Jack Frost's skill set, make a Matador.

Nope!  No more tiring.  The trade off is that if you leave and go back to the lobby your hp/sp don't replenish so you can really only go so far unless you want to pay that damn fox off.  You'll see later in the game.

Gahhh RPGs are so punishing. I just lost hours of progress. That really snaps my will to keep playing. I mean, I guess I didn't lose like....a TON considering I wasn't too far, but just the thought of sitting through those battles and that exposition and stuff again....
